Makai Dickerson Expected To Appear In Court

December 20, 2012

Former PLP candidate Makai Dickerson is expected to appear in Court later this month in relation to cannabis possession allegations. A police spokesperson said: “Mr. Dickerson is expected to appear in court in due course.”

A statement issued last month by Makai Dickerson said: “I made a mistake. I ask my God, my family and my community for forgiveness. While traveling to Dockyard one evening, some friends and I were pulled over at a checkpoint.

“We were searched and a very small amount of marijuana was found on my person. The substance was not mine and I didn’t even know it was there. It was stuffed at the bottom of my friends’ cigarette box which I had on my person.

“As instructed by the officer, I will appear at the Hamilton Police station on 16 December where I expect to receive a warning. I am certainly warned, and shaken. At no time did I ever ask anyone for help on this personal matter. I take full responsibility for my actions.

“I know that a lot of our young Bermudian men and women have experienced these kinds of challenges. It shows how strong a society we are that our people can make mistakes and be forgiven. I ask for that forgiveness,” concluded Mr Dickerson.

Mr Dickerson was scheduled to challenge OBA Leader Craig Cannonier in Constituency #12 Devonshire South Central in the recent election, and was replaced by Anthony Richardson.

this is wrong on so many levels. if it had just came to light ahead of time and wasnt so public he would have gotten off with just a warning like he said.

    • Um Um Like says:

Forget prosecution! He shouldn’t have even had a warning. It’s a PLANT!

    • Zombie Apocalypse says:

Really? Tourists get their cabins searched and any cannabis results in a $1,500 fine and no time to pay.

    • TRUTHBETOLD says:

This Has OBA Written all over it !

      • Ride says:

        @TRUTHBETOLD

Yes, clearly the OBA planted the cannabis (procured from their distribution centre at the Front Street Birdcage) in his friend’s cigarette pack without him noticing. Then, with their subliminal long-wave Jedi mind-trick, instructed him to hand it over to his ace-boy. Then they called the Crimestoppers hotline and put out the word that a vehicle with at least two black males was travelling about with a cigarette pack with a small amount of cannabis in it. Of course the whole entire Police force then mobilised to track-down this vehicle (since they are, you know, agents of the Man – a.k.a. the OBA). Once found the did the search and the rest is history.

Makes perfect sense. You should defend him at trial.

        • Who wrote the report? says:

          Haha.

But on a serious note the sentences and/or punishment need to be reviewed and modernized.

I know and like Makai, despite our political differences, and wish him all the best.

      • The Truthsayer says:

The same thing would have happened to him whether he was in government or not so STFU a$$!

      • Zombie Apocalypse says:

He reported to the Police on Dec 16th, one day before the election, and was charged. Can you explain how this has “OBA written all over it”?

        No, I didn’t think so.

The stupid a__ deserves the same treatment as anyone else. Any tourist found with any drugs gets a $1,500 fine.

  2. Actually says:

I think it’s good that they are treating him the same way as any other member of the public that get caught with illegal drugs. He shouldn’t get special treatment, nor should any other government official or business executive. Breaking the law is what it is regardless of the person. His lack of accountability was pretty poor too, “It’s not mine”. Really?

  3. realtalk81 says:

or maybe he coulda fought for what he believes in, instead of saying that it belonged to his “friend” and then on top of that say he expected a warning… umm no sir… u get fined and stop listed like everyone else… free the weed in my opinion, but as for this guy since he didnt stand up for the ganja, he can pay his 1000 and aint goin disney world for at least 7 years

  4. tim says:

    EXCELLENT

  5. Will says:

its a plant..and getting a criminal charge for possession of a bit of plant material is just that..CRIMINAL..We must not fill up news space or court space with these silly stories. Most people today must be sitting by and laughing when they read cannabis related charges..its soo childish to criminally prosecute for something that has no negative repercussions for the person or the community..except the way its traded.
    REGULATE AND CONTROL NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Rockfish#1 and#2 says:

Bottom line –he allegedly broke the law and quite rightly will appear before the courts.

Whether marijuana should be legal or not is beside the point. It must be noted that the party he was due to represent did not see fit to change the law, despite having the time and power to do so! Nor did they agree to being drug tested themselves.

    Time to move on people!

  7. Just Us says:

Not to worry, Archie will throw it out.

  8. Speak what you know says:

People thinking because he was in politics was the reason he believed he would receive a warning have it all wrong. He thought he would receive a warning because the caution law for small amounts was passed two years ago. Considering that he had no prior convictions, he took and passed a drug test and the great amount of community service he has done, that was the most likely result. People with more then he had, with no drug test done and having done far less in the community have been cautioned. He is being charged with 0.45 grams of cannabis, that’s less then half a gram. If he wasn’t into politics and this hadn’t gone public (it wouldn’t have gone public if he wasn’t into politics) this matter would have been behind him right now. That’s the sad thing about it all.

  9. Cedar King says:

Ok now I gotta speak on it….1st of course OBA (Oppression Bound A%$%^^les) had a hand in it comin 2 lite..Cannonier should be ashamed of himself…it was already an unfair battle & he had 2 cheat 2 win….than on top of that tryna associate Makia with a gang put’n the mans life in danger don’t ya’ll kno that ppl R get’n kill’d because of the hood they stay in…Come on be 4 real…he didn’t even have enough weed 2 make his breath stink…even if it was his…its funny 2 me how @ least 62% of Bermudians smoke or have smoked weed …& sociaty is making smoking weed worst than murder & being gay…its ok 2 be gay & u get less time 4 mudere than u do if u get caught with weed

    • Will says:

If you were to actually clear up some of your spelling and grammar i’m sure you’d find more people agreeing with you. I agree on a couple of things but to say the OBA leader is the force behind this is complete BS. Because he is in politics is the reason he is being faced with so much negative attention. Don’t agree with PLP politics but at the same time I do not think this young man should be prosecuted for having a small amount of herb which wasn’t going to have any negative consequences for anyone that night..even if it was his, whats the worse that would happen? He would have smoked some weed, felt happy and content then went home. Now some people go out and drink and thats what causes the problems…so people, do we want a nation of alcoholics or can we finally let people choose themselves what they wish to drink or inhale!!!!!!!!!!

  10. politics says:

You are a disgrace to your party. You are a disgrace to politics and a disgrace to your country. Where is your integrity? Getting caught with an illegal substance and your running for a political party. This type of behavior is irresponsible to say the least.

    • soooo ashamed says:

he was caught before he was running. peple make me smile. yes he should have spoken up, yes he shouldn’t have kept quite when he was put forward as a candidate. he should have kept his mouth shut as to what he expected would be the outcome and left that between him and the law, but the bottom line is that he is being sent to court because it is so public. if everone that has been stopped for this amount has to go to court the courts would never have time for anything else and we would be shocked as to who is there. only up thing for charging every one for such small amounts would be to get us out of the debt we are in. if not decriminalized small amounts and driving while disquallifed should be increased fines and community service. not jail time or suspened sentences. this would help in mutiple ways to help the island.
