Former Cayman Premier Questioned Over Limos

September 21, 2013

MCKEEVABUSH210X277Former Cayman Premier McKeeva Bush was questioned by the Cayman police earlier this week as part of a new probe into actions during his time in office.

Mr Bush, who faces separate criminal charges that were laid earlier this year, was not arrested during this latest probe, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Force said.

“Mr Bush was not arrested,” the RCIPS said. “He as interviewed in connection with the alleged misuse of public funds to finance limousine services provided by a company owned by an employee of the Cayman Islands office in Miami.”

Asked about the latest probe, Mr Bush said he had done nothing wrong and he had told police the car services used in his role as premier when visiting the US were organised by staff and followed a protocol that had been in place for many years.

“Car services have always been provided by staff in the US since the 1990s, and both security and car services were made available for the premier both here and overseas by the protocol office,” the CaymanNewsService quotes him as saying.

“The police asked me about cars but I don’t know what is paid to which companies for them; I was merely provided with the cars when needed.”

The 58-year-old was arrested in December 2012 by officers from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Services financial crime unit.

He was Premier at the time of his arrest, however a week later he was ousted in a parliamentary vote of no-confidence filed by Cayman Opposition Leader Alden McLaughlin.

Following his arrest, Mr Bush was charged with two counts of Misconduct in a Public Office, four counts of Breach of Trust by a member of the Legislative Assembly and five counts of Theft.

Mr Bush has called his arrest a “political witch hunt” lead by a “petty and jealous” Governor.
