Rider Listed In Critical Condition After Collision

October 8, 2013

[Updated] At approximately 8.20pm this evening [Oct 8] there was a collision on South Road [by Coral Beach] which resulted in one person receiving serious injuries.

Emergency personnel responded, and the road remains blocked at this time while police investigate the collision.

The rider of one of the motorcycles has been taken to KEMH with what we understand to be serious injuries.

Update 9.45pm: Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “Police responded to a report of a road traffic collision that took place on South Road in Warwick just 200 meters west of The Coral Beach entrance at 8:20pm.

“It appears that two cycles were traveling west on South Road when one of the cycles hit a livery cycle traveling in the other direction, resulting in one of the riders losing control and crashing his cycle.

“The man was taken to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition. Police are interested in talking with the second rider of the cycle who continued traveling west. The rider of the livery cycle was treated for hand injuries.”

PC Mark Norman, Major Ben Beasley and a visiting adventurous training instructor Charlie Younger happened to arrive on the scene a few seconds after the collision, and were able to use their first responder skills to assist the rider until EMTs arrived.

Update Oct.9 2.32pm: The police said that the injured rider — a 29 year old male — is listed in critical condition in the ICU with internal injuries. The rider of the livery cycle suffered a broken wrist.

“Police are still appealing for the rider of the second cycle that was travelling west with the 29 year old man in the ICU to contact police, as the rider is an important witness in this investigation. Anyone with any information to this collision is asked to contact police on 2950011,” a police spokesperson said.

Update Oct 10 10.30am: The rider is now listed in stable condition in the ICU.
