BLTA Holds Its 14th Interschool Tournament
The Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association [BLTA] held its 14th Interschool Tournament today [May 22] at the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium. The interschool tournament, part of the the BLTA’s schools programme, is sponsored by ACE and has been growing steadily since it first began in 2000.
The event was attended by Wayne Scott, Minister of Community, Culture, and Sports, BLTA President Coleridge Place, BLTA Vice President David Lambert, and David Jenkins, Vice President, Property Underwriter, ACE Bermuda.
The schools that participated in today’s Primary School Division tournament included West End, Port Royal, Saltus Grammar School, West Pembroke, Elliott, BHS, Victor Scott, Somersfield Academy, Northlands, Somerset Primary, and St. George’s Preparatory.”
Minister of Community, Culture, and Sports Wayne Scott said, “Congratulations to the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association and their title sponsor ACE for supporting tennis instruction in Bermuda’s primary, middle, and high schools.
“This tournament provides our school students with an opportunity to sharpen their tennis skills while enjoying healthy interschool competition. We have excellent tennis facilities in Bermuda. I am pleased to see so many students taking up the sport and utilizing the facilities here at W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium.”
David Jenkins, Vice President, Property Underwriter, ACE Bermuda said, “ACE is proud and delighted to sponsor such a rewarding programme. During the past 14 years, the schools tennis programme has seen over 5,000 children island-wide benefit from the programme.
“We commend the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association, President Coleridge Place, Vice President David Lambert, school coordinators Brent Smith, Jacklyn Lambert, Romar Douglas, and the many tennis coaches and PE teachers for their dedication to the programme. They are all instrumental in the development of Bermuda’s future tennis stars.”
Coleridge Place, President of the BLTA, said, “The interschool tennis initiative continues to be one of the most important components of the BLTA’s developmental programme.”
“The schools programme, organised by the BLTA, runs throughout the school year in Bermuda’s primary, middle, and high schools. The programme encourages students of all ages to participate in tennis on a recreational and competitive level, not only in their regular PE lessons, but also through the interschool tournaments.
“ACE’s sponsorship enables the BLTA to appoint qualified tennis coaches to work within the school system with PE teachers and provide interschool tournaments three times per year.”
