BHB: Acute Care Wing Nearing Completion

June 4, 2014

Works within the Acute Care Wing are nearing completion, with ongoing efforts including final commissioning, installation of medical equipment supplied by Bermuda Hospitals Board [BHB], installation of signage, correction of minor deficiencies such as painting touch-ups and other small adjustments, and final cleaning.

A spokesperson said, “BHB, Paget Health Services, BCM McAlpine and facilities managers Black & Mac Donald have a transition plan to allow a smooth transition from a construction site to an operational hospital in time for the building handover on June 12, through to the new wing opening to the public and patients this September.

“Work continues inside the building, with the ground floor seeing the Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging, and main entrance close to completion, with installation of final pieces of equipment and furniture still required. The new MRI, CT and X-ray machines have now been installed by the manufacturer and commissioned.”

“Further diagnostic imaging equipment is due to be transferred to the new wing from the existing facility just before the new wing opens to the public, apart from the existing CT scanner which will be transferred shortly after the public opening to ensure continuity of service.

“On the first floor, Dialysis and Oncology are both complete apart from final pieces of medical equipment and furniture. On the second floor, work on the operating rooms [OR] is nearing completion, with OR booms complete and final fixtures, fittings, and equipment being installed.

“The third, fourth, and fifth floors now have virtually all their fixtures, fittings, and equipment installed, and final signage is being progressed. The mechanical plant rooms are currently the busiest areas on site as final pieces of installation, start-up of remaining pieces of equipment, and commissioning are progressed.”

“The outside of the building is now complete apart from a final clean. Curbs, retaining walls, and footpaths are generally complete and the bus stop on Point Finger Road has been re-opened, providing safer access to the Continuing Care Unit and, shortly, to the Acute Care Wing.

“Soft landscaping is taking place as areas become available, with the majority of this work to the West and South of the site complete. Final tarmac to the roads and car park is scheduled early this month.

“The new Acute Care Wing opens to the public this September. If you have any questions about departments and services moving to the new wing, please contact Cathy Stovell on 239-1006 or email her on cathy.stovell@bhb.bm.

“Members of the public can support the new Acute Care Wing with a donation to the ‘Why It Matters’ campaign by visiting online.”
