Dr Ewart Brown: We Must Unite & Reconnect

August 30, 2014

The Bermuda Industrial Union hosted the Labour Day Banquet at the Fairmont Southampton last night [Aug 29], with former Premier Dr. Ewart Brown serving as the guest speaker, delivering a wide ranging speech covering politics, media, JetGate, PRC issue, casinos and much more.

Dr. Brown — who served as Premier from 2006 – 2010 — called “for an organized effort to take back the government,” saying “we must return the government to the PLP.”

“The UBP so wanted power that they disbanded, and reformed and rebranded themselves as the OBA. They understood that it would be difficult, if not impossible to win an election in Bermuda with a white leader, so what did they do? They found Black ones. I say that because it is true,” said Dr. Brown.

“The OBA saw Craig Cannonier as someone who they believed was electable in Bermuda, but they did not have a platform for him. So, John Barritt resigned his safe OBA parliamentary seat in order for Craig to run for it and win it.

“That, my friends, is what is meant by functional unity. John Barritt did not love Craig Cannonier. What’s love got to do with it? The members of the OBA did not love Craig Cannonier; you can tell that by the way they treated him when they no longer had use for him.

“Craig had probably not been a member for as long as others who thought they should have their turn. But he stepped ahead of many, nonetheless, including our current Premier, The Honourable Michael Dunkley.

“These OBA members, in their mischievous wisdom, admirable ambition, and undistracted willpower, saw Craig as the leader that they needed to win back the government. And that’s what they did on December 17, 2012.

“Now, the question we need to ask ourselves as Bermudians who are concerned about Bermudians, is what do we need to do in order to win back the government, because nothing else will stop the bleeding.

“Do we have the grit and the selflessness of a John Barritt? Do we have the patience of Premier Dunkley? Do we have the grit of the OBA? Can we exercise that type of functional unity? I say we can and we must.

“We must return the government to the PLP. I will say this again in another way. I am calling for an organized effort to take back the government – starting right now! Right here! We cannot afford to wait 3 more years for an election. There will be nothing left for our people. We must unite; we must re-connect with ourselves; we must be prideless; we must be driven; we must have singular focus.

“Terry and Randy, we need you to come home and be on the right side of history. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “the time is always right to do the right thing.”

“PLP defectors to the OBA, we need you to listen to that prickly conscience that must bother you more and more each day as you see how this OBA Government has deceived you. Dr. King would say: “Never, never be afraid to do what’s right…. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”

“To OBA parliamentarians who care about everyday Bermudians and see what is happening, Dr. King might advise: “Conscience asks the question, is it right? For there comes a time when one must take the position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must do it because conscience tells him it is right.”

“And, PLP, we need you to open your arms and accept whoever comes home. For the Bible says: Put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience – bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you forgive”.

Speaking on the JetGate controversy, Dr Brown referenced some of the various reports and allegations made against him, and said, “Imagine that it was the PLP government who promised the people a referendum on gaming before the election. But, then, coincidentally, after meeting with this private jet host, decided and announced that there would be no referendum.”

“Imagine that it was the PLP government leaders admittedly meeting with someone about securing the right to build and own a casino in Bermuda, and as a direct result of that government meeting, the PLP or some affiliate of the PLP, received $350,000. Do you think that scandal would no longer be news?”

Addressing the PRC issue, Dr. Brown said, “Wake up! And see that our country is being taken away from working people – we don’t matter to this OBA government. Do you understand the significance of this PRC issue? Do you understand what 1,500 additional voters and their children on the rolls will do to electoral politics in Bermuda?

“Do you understand that “they” understand? …That they know that if 1,500 PRC’s are added to the rolls, there is a good chance the PLP will never regain power – at least not in our lifetimes.”

Dr. Brown’s’ full speech follows below:

Well, Hello There!
My, it’s been a long, long time!
How’m I doing? Oh, I guess that I’m doing fine.
It’s been so long now, but it seems like it was only yesterday. Ain’t it funny how time slips right on away.

The most important question, as I channel Al Green, is “How’s your new love?”

But, I’ll get back to that. On a very serious note:

Thanks, Laverne, my Defender-in-Chief, for that wonderful introduction.

I want to especially thank the Bermuda Industrial Union – the President, Chris Furbert, the General Council, and the membership – for this distinct honour. As we all know, one can go all over world and speak and attempt to spout wisdom. But, there’s nothing like coming home to talk to your sisters, your brothers, your friends and your family.

So, that is the context in which I wish to address you this evening – it is as your family. We are family! Remember that!

What does that mean? That means that as a family member, I have the privilege – indeed, the responsibility – of being able to tell you where I think you are right, and where I think you are wrong. It means that I can be frank and tell you the truth as I see it and as you need to hear it. It means that I will pull no punches and I will swing with no holds barred as I share with you the indisputable truth. It means that a few of you – as a matter of fact – many of you, might not like what I have to say. But, I am not going to let that bother me – I am older than some of you, I can probably run faster than others of you, and I know how to make a quick exit.

You may or may not recall a meeting years ago when I was running for the leadership of The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party. I was speaking, and banged on the podium for emphasis while proclaiming, “If you do not want change, do not vote for me”. I thought about that tonight, because I have a similar warning for you: “If you do not want to hear the truth as I see it, you may want to leave now.”

Much later, in 2010, when I held true to the words I uttered to my nuclear family and to you – that I would not seek but one term as the Leader of the PLP – I also declared that I was retiring from active politics and that I was going to be watching from the pavilion. Well, I have been watching.

I have been truly pleased to see and admire the hard work, vision and tenacity of the leader of the Bermuda Industrial Union, Chris Furbert. He has led you well through some very challenging times. Leading a union during prosperous times is difficult enough, because everyone wants to be more prosperous. But, leading a union through times when unemployment is high and pressure is on not to seek wage increases – indeed to take pay cuts – is as hard as it gets.

It is thus inspiring to see the continued strength of the BIU and trade union movement in Bermuda. The membership remains vibrant. In a time when words like “privatization” and “mutualization” are finding their way into our national discourse, unions must be vigilant and prepared for the next wave of challenges to the cohesion of the labour movement. One thing is certain – the attacks remain the same and the playbook about how to destabilize our causes is unchanged. The BIU of today remains a target of those who seek to undermine the strength of the organization and its commitment to fair working conditions for its members. And, oh, by the way, if the BIU decides to raise its membership dues, that’s the BIU’s business – and no one else’s. Since when do the media in this country care about Union dues? Brother Chris, I salute you this evening because I do not foresee your job getting easier any time soon.

Many times from my perch in the pavilion, I have been beaming with pride because I have been watching our young people in the PLP – like our smart, fearless leader, Marc Bean – step up to take the helm passed on by Leader Freddie Wade, Dame Lois, and Former Premiers Dame Jennifer, Alex and Paula. Often, I have been brimming with hope for our Island nation as I have seen the new alliance of the BIU, the BPSU and the voiceless that has come together as the People’s Campaign under the leadership of Reverend Nicholas Tweed.

Quite often, though, I have been saddened and at the point of tears – most memorably, on December 17, 2012, when the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party lost the election to the United Bermuda Party. That was not a slip of the tongue. The PLP lost to the UBP. You remember the William Shakespeare quote:

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”

…and I would add, just as foul. Basically, that quote says that what matters is what something IS, not what it is called. Well, the UBP by any other name is still the UBP.

So, from the pavilion, I was left to ask myself: “How in the world did that happen?” After working so hard for so long, how did we let the UBP back into power?

I will tell you why and how. As the late Malcolm X was portrayed as saying in the movie about his life: “We were had, we were took, we were hoodwinked, bamboozled, led astray, run amok.”

We were had by our enemies and by our lack of faith in our friends. There are a couple of serious quotes from Brother Malcolm that probably tell the story: “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power – Because they control the minds of the masses.” He also said, “If you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”

And, that’s in great part what happened. The PLP was painted as this spendthrift party who got the country in debt and stole all of its money – the Party that didn’t know how to govern and didn’t know how to rule. We were painted as the party who gave our friends and family the business. Do you even know who’s getting the business now?

No, you do not know, because you are not being told. You are not being fed hogwash everyday about the sitting government or its ministers. The companies that get business are not being torn to shreds or castigated and investigated by a rabid press that tarnishes their images for years to come. This current OBA government is doing everything it wants to do, and there is not a word about what is going on in the press.

Do you hear the silence?

When was the last time you saw an article about how much someone spent on a trip? When was the last time that you saw an article that told you how much the Premier’s hotel room cost? Imagine with me for a moment.

Imagine that it was I, when I was Premier, who flew to Washington in a private jet with a couple of my ministers, and that my host who paid for everything was someone who had every intention of owning a casino in Bermuda. Do you think that you would know all about this if it had not been for the brilliant, brave reporting of Ayo Johnson? Ayo deserves your support in his new venture. And we need and deserve reporting that will balance the daily newspaper. Thanks, Ayo.

So, now, back to Jetgate: If it were a PLP government involved, do you think that scandal would no longer be news? Where are the newspaper stories? Where is the investigative journalism?

Imagine that it was the PLP government who promised the people a referendum on gaming before the election. But, then, coincidentally, after meeting with this private jet host, decided and announced that there would be no referendum.

Do you hear the silence?

Imagine that it was the PLP government leaders admittedly meeting with someone about securing the right to build and own a casino in Bermuda, and as a direct result of that government meeting, the PLP or some affiliate of the PLP, received $350,000. Do you think that scandal would no longer be news? What about the U.S. consultant who is thought to have brokered the deal? Has anyone done any research on his company, his partner, his partner’s past? This consultant is someone who was working for the OBA before and since the election, and who is said to have formed a company for the sole purpose of securing an $80,000 Tourism contract for 8 weeks of work. Oops! Did I mention that the Minister of Tourism is thought to be a close friend? Did I mention that this consultant is said to have no experience in Tourism? Have you seen any news stories about this?

Do you hear the silence, people?

Imagine that the PLP was still in power, and the Leader and the Deputy Leader of the Opposition stood up in Parliament, and declared that they were offered bribes by government leaders. And then those same Opposition leaders, without benefit of the protection of Parliament, repeated those allegations outside.

Where are the Police? Where is Whitehall? Where is the Governor? When a lying, snake by the name of David Bolden stood up in Court on the day that his criminal trial for 18 theft and money laundering charges was going to the jury, they were visible. When this convicted liar said that he was afraid to go to a meeting because he thought he might run into me and I might try to bribe him, they were all visible. They said they were bringing in help from the U.S. to complete the investigation – presumably the FBI. Why doesn’t anyone ask the FBI to investigate Jetgate? There is a major U.S. component to Jetgate.

Do you hear the silence? Do you want to know why I ask these questions? I ask them because our PLP government would have been asked these and many more. I am reminded of an unexpected encounter with a former patient of mine in the airport a few months ago. She whispered to me that I should read the Bible story about Haman and Mordecai. I did just that. The story is told in the Book of Ruth that the King was told by Haman that Mordecai was undermining the King. The King ordered Mordecai to build a gallows so Mordecai could be hanged. But Queen Esther petitioned the King on Mordecai’s behalf and explained to the King that in reality, it was Haman who was undermining the King. The King was enraged and ordered that Haman, not Mordecai, be hanged on the very same gallows that Haman had built for Mordecai. The moral of that story is God is always at work. The bad things that you plan for others, such as the towering gallows that were built for Mordecai, may be used to execute you. You may fall into the trap laid by your own hands and reap what you sowed.

As I understand it, I am still being investigated by the Police – over 3 years after this lie was told. There are many people who believe that the reason that they will always keep an open investigation on me is because they are afraid that I still might come back into politics. So, they keep their dirty playbook in play. No problem! The room is not sold out tonight because Government House bought the tickets.

There is still something wrong with this picture, though. And, I will tell you what it is. The PLP Government and its leaders have been, and still are, treated differently than the OBA Government – by the Governor, the Police, the British Commonwealth, and the Press. That is discrimination in its rankest form. It is inexcusable. We are 2nd class citizens in our own country. It is wrong.

By way of example, I need to spend a little more time on myself and perhaps share some things you don’t know or haven’t thought about. I can use my story as an example of how Brother Malcolm’s idea of bamboozling works. You see, what happens is that you get distracted. People fool you with stories of what and how much I am stealing. And, while you are looking at me, they make off with everything. Some of you still believe that I have cedar beams in my house. Some of you still believe that I stole money from the Government ……that I took kickbacks from government contracts. Well, let me say for once and for all that ANY and ALL allegations, innuendo, gossip, tales, and stories about my taking anything from Government are absolute and total lies. There are at least 4 reasons you can believe this:

1) I am not a thief. My momma and daddy raised me better than that. I don’t believe in stealing period and I did not steal from Government. I believe in giving – giving to scholarships for children’s education, to programs like Mirrors, to football teams to help youngsters develop their potential, to people who are in need, to my beloved Howard University, and in order to take good care of my family and friends. I give money that my wife and I earn through our hard work.

2) The second reason is that my momma and daddy didn’t raise no fool. As Former Premier Alex Scott says, “I heard them when they drove up”. With the truths I told and the way I governed, I knew these people were coming after me. First of all, you cannot hide anything. All of this talk you hear about taking money and hiding it offshore is pure hogwash. You can’t hide anything in this electronic “Big Brother” age. I never attempted to steal anything and I never attempted to hide anything. I always knew that every receipt for everything I bought inside and outside of government would be examined. Whenever my wife and I traveled, let me be clear, my wife bought all of her airline tickets 100% of the time. My former colleagues will tell you that. But, I will tell you what else we did. If we stayed in a hotel and ordered room service, on the morning we checked out, my assistant would take 2 credit cards to the desk – one for Government and one for my wife. We would split the room service charges in half, and we would pay for those personally. Why would we do this when we were traveling on official business and my wife was working hard to represent Bermuda as the wife of its Premier? We did it because we knew they were coming after us for any little thing – whether it was a justifiable expense or not. So, we always lived as if every receipt and every transaction would be examined. We have absolutely nothing to hide; we sleep well at night. We know that if they ever find anything, you can rest assured that it will be because they put it there.

3) Thirdly, these people know where we earn our money. They have access to everything. They have people in the banks and insurance companies who know the exact origin of our dollars. That is why there is an all-out assault on our clinics and our doctors. They want and intend to put me out of business. In the past several months, I have had to defend our clinics before virtually every regulatory agency in Bermuda. So, while they still keep this investigation open on me – presumably for something they are trying to find or manufacture I did while in public office, they are at the same time constantly chipping away at the real source of most of our revenues – our business.

4) There is a 4th reason you should know about as to why I have never taken anything from Government. It is very simple. God has blessed me abundantly, and I am grateful. Now I have to share one more story on my wife. We were on Martha’s Vineyard, where Wanda has been going for the past 34 years, and where she bought her first home in 1990 – 24 years ago. We passed by one of her female Wall Street colleagues’ homes which had recently been purchased – a fabulous property. My wife said to me that she envied this woman. That was strange, because Wanda does not believe in or practice envy, so I knew she was speaking tongue-in-cheek. When I asked why, she responded that her female colleague was a single mother who had a similar position on Wall Street and had sent 3 children through college and bought a fabulous house, without it having been implied that she stole anything. I recount that to illustrate that what my wife and I have is what our parents wanted for us, and what you want for your children when you sacrifice so much for them to do better. We have what many people like us have who have gone to school and worked for years to become a doctor and an investment banker who is also an attorney – some have more than us and some have less than us – but there is nothing untoward. If I was white, some might call me a “self-made” man. But, that’s impossible because I am non-white. I must have stolen what I have.

Finally, and this is not a reason. This is an admonition. Think! Think for yourselves! If there was some evidence of my having stolen some money or taken some kickback, you and I would have seen it by now – it would have been plastered in the news, and I would be in jail already….although I might be tomorrow – after this speech.

These people have gotten into your heads so much that my close friends and supporters will say things to me like “I don’t care how much they say you steal, you are the best leader we had”. Or, “you can steal all day long, you still won’t catch up with the UBP and you are still a good leader”. You think those are compliments? They’re not. They are evidence of how much you have let these people work your mind.

That’s how bamboozling works. You get so pre-occupied with what our mutual enemies say about me – some of you believe them – that you join together against me. You believe all the lies they have printed about the PLP misappropriating funds and stealing $800 million. You coalesce against the PLP. You do not vote for the PLP. You cannot bring yourself to vote for the OBA, so you stay at home. Voila! That is the answer to my question. You were hoodwinked!

That is how the UBP got the government back. You don’t have to tell me, but I know some of you in this very room voted for the OBA – you drank their Kool-Aid. And some of you who did not vote for the OBA stayed at home and didn’t vote at all, which was in fact, a vote for the OBA. But, don’t worry, there is still a chance you might get in heaven. You can redeem yourselves. Keep listening! And wake up!

Wake up! And see that our country is being taken away from working people – we don’t matter to this OBA government. Do you understand the significance of this PRC issue? Do you understand what 1,500 additional voters and their children on the rolls will do to electoral politics in Bermuda? Do you understand that “they” understand? …That they know that if 1,500 PRC’s are added to the rolls, there is a good chance the PLP will never regain power – at least not in our lifetimes.

Wake up! And see that the last opportunities for wealth creation are being given away before your very eyes – we don’t matter to this OBA government. Reflect on how many hotel deals have been, and are being inked, with deal terms that make them extraordinarily attractive. Whose friends and family do you think are getting those?

Wake up! And see that the jobs to be had are not being given to us. I heard that our former Premier Paula was on the radio saying that she cannot find a job in Bermuda – a former Premier, a lawyer who worked in the captive insurance business, a former Attorney General… She cannot find a job in Bermuda? What about Morgan’s Point? Paula knows Morgan’s Point up, down and around; she signed the deal that conveyed the property to Brian, Alan and Nelson. She worked at Ace with Brian for years. There is no job for her at Morgan’s Point?

Bank of Butterfield, where are you? Former Premier Paula knows you intricately as well. She studied your balance sheets, championed your cause when you were failing, and ensured the $200 million loan guaranty for you. Now, hold on! I am not talking about quid pro quo – as in because she did for them, they should do for her. I am talking about one of our smart, talented attorneys who is one of the most experienced people around and she cannot find a job, even though I just named at least 3 entities where we all know she has special knowledge. There is something wrong with this picture, people.

Wake up! And see that casinos are coming to Bermuda, and the rights to operate them are said to have already been promised. Why can’t the people of Bermuda be involved in these deals? Why can’t a new corporation be formed that allows all Bermudians to invest in gaming – with sums as little as $100 or as large as $1 million? Why can’t licenses be granted to the Bermuda Citizens’ Gaming Corporation, and casino operators be made to deal with Bermuda’s citizens the same way they have learned to deal with Native Americans in casino deals all over the United States?

Wake up! And see that your looking at me cross-eyed and my looking at you evil-eyed do not matter in the scheme of things. Our country is at stake. We need to unite, people. And, that gets me back to one of my views from the pavilion. I saw that there was a letter which stated that people should “stay in their own lanes” – I guess that meant that preachers should preach, labour unions should organize and move around labor issues, and that politics should be left to the politicians. I know it was a well-meaning and well-intended letter. But, I have to speak on it because I promised you the truth. And the truth is this:

If Madiba, The Honorable Nelson Mandela, had stayed in his lane as a lawyer or a prisoner, he might not have become the greatest revolutionary of all time; he might not have gone on to become the first duly elected President of South Africa and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, inspiring peoples of all nations, creeds and colors to peacefully fight for freedom and justice.

If Brother Malcolm X had stayed in his lane as a burglar and a pimp, he might not have changed the lives of countless young Black men who found hope and self-esteem as a result of his teachings; he might not have lived just long enough to become one of the most influential African-Americans of all time.

If the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan had stayed in his lane as a violinist and calypso singer, we might have never seen the everlasting beauty of the Million Man March on Washington where Black men from all over the world re-committed to their families and their communities.

If our own Dr. E.F. Gordon had stayed in his lane as a doctor, where would we be today? If our AME church leaders, who have played a pivotal role in the advancement of Black Bermudians by their work outside the pulpit, had stayed in their lanes, we would not remember the names Foster, Tobitt and Monk.

We don’t need to focus on our lanes. We need to focus on our destination and forge every union we can. I call it the concept of “functional unity”. Functional unity is at play when we come together around a common goal, and we unite and take all the steps necessary in order to reach it. I will give you a present day example, which will also illustrate what we are up against politically.

The UBP so wanted power that they disbanded, and reformed and rebranded themselves as the OBA. They understood that it would be difficult, if not impossible to win an election in Bermuda with a white leader, so what did they do? They found Black ones. I say that because it is true. I say that with all admiration and respect for the two Black former leaders of the UBP who have crossed over and joined the PLP – Wayne Furbert, and most recently, Kim Swan. These are brave men, who knew what was happening in our country, and who could no longer abide standing with those who are making mincemeat of everyday Bermudians. Also in their ranks are Darius Tucker, Jamahl Simmons and Gynneth Rawlins. I salute and commend you all.

Now, let me get back to my illustration of functional unity.

The OBA saw Craig Cannonier as someone who they believed was electable in Bermuda, but they did not have a platform for him. So, John Barritt resigned his safe OBA parliamentary seat in order for Craig to run for it and win it. That, my friends, is what is meant by functional unity. John Barritt did not love Craig Cannonier. What’s love got to do with it? The members of the OBA did not love Craig Cannonier; you can tell that by the way they treated him when they no longer had use for him. Craig had probably not been a member for as long as others who thought they should have their turn. But he stepped ahead of many, nonetheless, including our current Premier, The Honourable Michael Dunkley. These OBA members, in their mischievous wisdom, admirable ambition, and undistracted willpower, saw Craig as the leader that they needed to win back the government. And that’s what they did on December 17, 2012.

Now, the question we need to ask ourselves as Bermudians who are concerned about Bermudians, is what do we need to do in order to win back the government, because nothing else will stop the bleeding. Do we have the grit and the selflessness of a John Barritt? Do we have the patience of Premier Dunkley? Do we have the grit of the OBA? Can we exercise that type of functional unity? I say we can and we must.

We must return the government to the PLP.

Terry and Randy, we need you to come home and be on the right side of history. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “the time is always right to do the right thing.”

PLP defectors to the OBA, we need you to listen to that prickly conscience that must bother you more and more each day as you see how this OBA Government has deceived you. Dr. King would say: “Never, never be afraid to do what’s right…. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”

To OBA parliamentarians who care about everyday Bermudians and see what is happening, Dr. King might advise: “Conscience asks the question, is it right? For there comes a time when one must take the position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must do it because conscience tells him it is right.”

And, PLP, we need you to open your arms and accept whoever comes home. For the Bible says: Put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience – bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you forgive”.

I am not asking you to love each other. I am asking you to work together toward a common goal – the return of Bermuda to Bermudians. Let’s do something about a Black unemployment rate that is FOUR TIMES the White unemployment rate!
I will end with a quote from the famous Helen Keller, a great champion of labour rights: “The world is moved not only by the mighty shoves of the heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker. Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

PLP, BIU, BPSU, People’s Campaign, Churches, Mosques, Workmens’ Clubs, football clubs, cricket clubs, women, men, boys and girls, Wake Up! Bermuda will not get better if we just let it be. We must work together toward change – you and me!

Thank you for this awesome privilege. Good night!

  1. Bermyboy says:

Oh yea Dr. Brown can say all this because he has all his money!!!

We (the working class) have so much to loose if they were to be re-elected again. Homes are being reclaimed by the banks for people who do not have work and cannot find it due to the PLP chasing job making people out of here.
If you think Tourism will bring jobs here in the short term I guess you must still believe in Santa Claus.
Any bright ideas how you can swing your magic wand to create jobs Dr. Brown??

    • Black Soil says:

In a PLP throne speech they promised to make Whites Island a public park to be enjoyed for all. Instead they leased the island out to a PLP hack who made money renting it out. So please…stop telling us that the PLP care about the people. They DON’T.

      • ya right says:

I am still a supporter. For a second, I supported the new OBA but when I sat in the House of Assembly and watched some members of the OBA tell bold lies and make childish remarks. That was it. After that, I could see right through the OBA. I was extremely disappointed when Craig spoke in the House of Assembly. He wasn’t genuine along with most of the OBA members. To be honest, all the PLP hate comments only reassure my political position.

Furthermore, Dr. Brown is an excellent speaker; he came to Atlanta, Georgia when he was premier to visit the Bermudians in college. He gave us hope and urged Bermudians to come back to Bermuda with their education and knowledge. That is something that has stuck with me and I will never forget. He answered all of our questions, and he was genuine with his comments. No other politician has ever done something like that probably in the history of Bermuda.

In my opinion, the OBA only cares about expats and foreigners. 95% of their ideas or changes are foreigner based. The OBA have broken promises and haven’t stuck to their election campaign promises. Dr. Brown and the PLP will get my vote any day. From what I’ve seen, the UBP/OBA politicians are confused. Kim Swan and Wayne Furbert woke up after the smoke cleared. Albeit Craig now realizes his mistake to mix and mingle with snakes. They toyed with him then left him in exile when his time was up.

        • BETTTY TRUMP says:

“Impressive, Powerful, Forceful Message, Provoking, and Outstanding Speech”

Thanks Dr. Brown for the delivery of such an overpowering, pungent, and insightful message. NO one in Bermuda can deliver such a dynamic speech and have the power to present in a manner that reflects the bold and honest truth. It is often difficult for some to hear and accept the truth, as it is often painful. Only Dr. Brown has the ability to deliver such a speech, as he is one of Bermuda’s strongest leaders. Most strong leaders have those that love or hate them.

The bloggers comments clearly prove that you have the power to move a people. It is evident by the comments made today, many are working hard to send a message which is besieged in fear. The quality of the speech and the high level of attendance of folks at the banquet, validated and endorsed that Dr. Brown is a very influential, high-ranking, forceful, and prominent political figure in Bermuda today despite being out of politics for years.

Dr. Brown has the power to influence Bermudians to focus on the key issues that are very crucial, and critical facing Bermuda today. He can motivate a people, and this is another fear that some have today. We as a people must understand the message and accept what he is delivering to us, for our long-term future.

The power of Dr. Brown’s message, has struck at the core nerves of those whom fear his powerful message and strength of a people. The comments reflect a certain sector of people whom are fearful, terrified, worried, and scared of what could be accomplishment if we as a people came together in unity as one. We as a people must receive the message Dr. Brown has delivered to us, and push through the political strategy of the bloggers, and move on to achieve what is in the best interest of Bermuda. We must stay focus, and do not allow any negative, and falsehoods to fool us moving forward. We must get focus and stay focus on the goal.

I believe today, Dr. Brown’s message to some is that “their deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that their deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens most.”

This power that we possess can make a difference in Bermuda, and we must act as one to make the necessary changes. We must come together folks, and ignore all the noise that is out there to distract us, like the blogger team of the OBA. We must not allow that to distract us from reaching and achieving a goal for our children and future generations of Bermudians. We must stand as one.

Let’s unite, and move Bermuda forward as one. Hi all !! Much love !!

          • Raymond Ray says:

My, my, my, where has this “character”(BETTTY TRUMP)been hiding? Or is it a coincidence that the invincible,(as he / they may think)Dr.Ewart Brown has stepped forward with the same old same old?
Those that were present at the B.I.U. / P.L.P. “party” were a minute portion of the voting population and I truly believe people aren’t going to forgive nor forget the “crap” and all the “hoodwinking” that individual had done…Ask Dame Jennifer Smith, I’m sure she can recall how conniving Dr. Ewart Brown is capable of being…Straight faced too :-(

            • For Real WE MUST REUNITE AND ReCONNECT says:

              Well said @Bettty Trump.

Your comment is spot on and we must do what Dr. Brown has indicated “Reunite and Reconnect”.

This is scary, frightening, and chilling message for some. It puts great fear and apprehension in many, thus the negative comments coming from a certain sector within our community. Raymond Ray a big defender of the OBA comment is evidences of that. Only Dr. Brown can do that as he has awaken many to the naked facts. It is expected, but as you indicated we must move on, and unite for the betterment of our children and Bermuda’s future. What a powerful mighty and formidable force we are as one !

Together we must come, and just how powerful we can be! This is their biggest fear Bettty and your 100% correct!!

            • Cleancut says:

Yes its back, with better grammar and nicer paragraphs.

              Dr. Brown……….is that you?

    • B says:

Dr Brown has arisen you all should feel threatened!! The OBA are finished!! There will be no renaming of the UBP/BDA/OBA….ITS OVER!!! Enjoy your last few years! You don’t have ballz to call an election!!

      • CBA says:

Lol because the plp did such a good job? Wrecked this island and some people want them back just to say they have the power? Give me a break!

        • Albertini says:

I’ve just re-read Brown’s speech and he clearly has no concept of the hurt he caused, the anger against him, and that a few of his PLP cronies, living in the splendour that represents an island of 60,000 people.

I’ve news for you Dr Brown, most of us aren’t glad you are fine, and resent your bile and divisive politics that brought this island to its knees. Go home please, this isn’t your home.

          • Tell it like it is says:

You resent Dr . Brown’s vile and divisive politics. ” What a joke. Who could be more divisive then the OBA and people of that ilk. Dr. Brown’s speech was spot on. All kinds of dirty tricks were displayed by the OBA. Unfortunately some Bermudians are very slow to figure out the slick evil ways of the OBA/UBP. Craig found out the hard way. They use you and then kick you to the curb. That old guard is still there. Like I said before. Dr. Brown hit the nail right on the head.

            • Creamy says:

No, it’s Brown and people of his ilk who are divisive. They have no plan to unite the country. That’s why they will not be elected again, as Brown himself says.

His whole speech was about himself. Eron Hill has a lot to learn, but at least he’s not always talking about himself.

              • Evie says:

Oh please they have never wanted to unite the country OBA/UBP and after having our hands chopped off every time we extend the olive branch by Michael Dunkley and people of his ilk talk about divisive wake the hell up Dreamy

                • LOL (Original TM*) says:

Sorry Dr. Brown even admits who the real predjudice people are in this country as it stands today.

“it would be difficult, if not impossible to win an election in Bermuda with a white leader”

    • Raymond Ray says:

The Premier Michael Dunkley and associates were present last evening at the B.I.U. Labour Day Banquet and heard it for themselves from “the horses mouth” :-(

      • Kangoocar says:

@raymond, let me correct you, you must of meant the horses A$$????

        • Raymond Ray says:

          Maybe I had :-(

        • MAKE MY DAY says:

@Kangoocar…. Excellent “correction”!! I don’t know who is the BIGGEST narcissist BHO or Brown!! But in the end – they will both be “losers”!!!

          • Kangoocar says:

I am in total agreement with that, “make my day “

      • Rego says:

    • Black Soil says:

The fact that the PLP/BIU is reaching back to DREB just proves again that they are an inward looking, backward party. I doubt most Bermudians will want to turn the clock back and go backwards towards PLP rule again. Bermuda needs a new party to rise out from the PLP…..so the LaVerne’s and Chris Furberts of the world can be left behind to forment in their hate and ignorants.

      • Impressive says:

Hate??? Take a look at the comments directed toward the PLP and its supporters, then come and talk to me about hate again,,, please..

        • Anon says:

Citizens tend to get pissed when their country is ruined and they their off spring are stuck with generations and generations of debt.

    • CBA says:

As much blame as dr brown puts on the oba, I wonder if he realises it was him that caused the plp to lose. He lost even his own supporters. I wonder if he realises that.

      • @ CBA,

That is so true, his ego wont allow him to admit those home truths, he knows it but he wont wear it.

This is just preaching to the converted, we have seen what an unrestrained PLP did while in office and the people (working class) are feeling it the most.

Return the PLP to power anytime soon? At Your Peril Bermuda!!

        • Kunta says:

Um lets see, broken PROMISE for a referendum for gaming (which is tied to JET GATE) lack of public forum’s on PRC’s, changing de license plates on G.P cars without informing public, passing a law that suspended ALL contracts to benefit Friends and Family (Water Front), de Infamous JET GATE and its players, resignation of a Premier for Scandal, a Premier who thinks de peoples concern is a waste of F!@#ing time, and $350.000 to help finance an election to convince SURROGATES like you, and dismantling the core fibers of our structure that our For Fathers fought and died for from the Oligarchy System.
I think ill take my chances with P.L.P.

          • Let Me Remind You says:

@Kunta, you are forgetful and desperate. Most of what you have written about has to do with what you like to call jetgate. Let me first remind you that the $350 K was money donated to the OBA. It was not the publics money.

But since you are slinging mud, let me remind you about what you may have forgot that happened during the PLP/BIU 14 years of destruction.

T-Street Scandal that cost the public millions.
Remember the Bermuda Housing Corporation Scandal involving Dr. Browns home in Flatts?
$800 MILLION in the PUBLICS money “unaccounted for?
TCD project awarded to PLP member without going out to tender.
Cruise Ship Pier Scandal. Given to PLP member and had to be repaired shortly after.
            Tuckers Point SDO?
            St Georges Golf Course closed.
Club Med blown up – no hotel built as promised.
Coco Beach – 99 year lease! For what?
A new company made up of PLP members and / or friends Proactive awarded Berkeley contract although they had never built a single thing before!
Berkeley School project was $20 million over contracted price and were still paid.
            Vesey Street SDO
7 year term limits pushed many exempt companies to relocate the offices or parts of their offices, leaving many Bermudians without work.
They took a country that had zero debt and put us into massive debt with nothing to show for it!

…the list is long..but I will stop now because I have no time, but I thing you got the point.

            • Kunta says:

How did your life improve over those 14 years other than free bus rides. We all know how their, PLP leaders lives and bank accounts increased but how about yours? Try being 100% honest with yourself when answering this. They are baffling the people with the usual emotion bull crap.

• Truth or BARE All BDA says:

Where in this powerful, piece, is the explanation of ” The Platinum Period” , that The Hon Dr. Brown presented as an unprecedented uptake in investment into the island. This occurred when the world acknowledged a full blown recession. Terrifically large amounts of money disappeared in looking at investments that were never coming. I initially was proud of my Premier, for taking a strong stance during his time.

I tried to keep positive, but the actions, didn’t match the reality of our situation.

But I’m always willing to follow his writings and speeches, whether I agree or not, I am so Happy when he makes great points, and so unhappy when he makes derisive commentary that literally rips into our people, good people that could have looked at his thoughts with an open mind, close that door again.

Thanks for sharing your views Dr. Brown, I always appreciate your candor.

And please can we tone down the rhetoric, my people, we are living in 2014.

  2. JH says:

He actually used the word ‘deceive’ when talking about the OBA.

    • Strike fund says:

      He’s pretty much spot on.

The problem is the PLP were so irresponsible as Government last time. Could they be trusted again in the near future with the budget?

      • MAKE MY DAY says:

You are KIDDING… Right??? How the he*l do you think the Island ran-up a $2+ BILLION deficit under these PLP buffoons!! They will NEVER be able to manage their way out of a wet paper bag!!!

It’s certainly NOT “rocket science”!! Fourteen years of these clowns trying to manage the *Cheque Book* left the Island bankrupt!!

NEVER AGAIN… If you do NOT want to become a *Banana Republic*!! PERIOD!!

The USA is finally awakening to the fact that Odummer (BHO) is a complete idiot – but he will be a *Lame Duck* idiot after November – when the GOP win-back the senate and control both chambers of Congress!!

    • Kunta says:

Shame on you for trying to Hoodwink.

        • LOL (Original TM*) says:

Even the PLP talk shows say that they wont allow anti bermudian comments @ Kunta. This is funny cause after reading the Dr speech and understanding the context from which he speaks he is actually speaking against other voting Bermudians hense we should hear a statement from all those in the PLP whom say they dont like anti Bermudian talk being spude but here they seem to like it very much. Infact its themselves that continue saying the Bermudians are lazy and have no work ethic like they are brainwashing you. It is coming from them themselves. Then they diss white Bermudians as evil, demonic, genetically racist are the anti Bermudian terms they use talk about talking out both sides of your mouth. Where is the PLP chairman speaking out about nasty and vile hate speech, guess it’s ok when the PLP does it?!

LOL I’m all for Uniting & Reconnecting but as Bermudians not as white or black Bermudians that type of unity is only on the sufface and ends in soar grapes all the time like a relationship built on lies.

          • Anon says:

            Kunta,

I have a few questions for Dr. Brown that I think most Bermudians want answers to:

            1) Why did The PLP, his own Government, create over $2billion dollars in debt a well as leave the pension funds underfunded by another $2billion?

            2) Why did his Goverment increase the size of the civil service to a level that what unsupportable?

            3) What plans does his former Government have to reduce our current debt going forward without reducing. The size of the civil service or cutting costs?

            4) Why did his Government encourage existing international business to leave taking 5,000 staff and dependant with them?

            5) Why did his Government discourage investment in our own island by having Bermudians married to non-Bermudians require licences in order to buy property in their own country?

            6) Why is his Government not acknowledging that the reason the average Bermudian is suffering now is as a direct result of his Governments policies?

            7) Why did his Government write legislation that would give Bermudian citizenship to PRCs if that was not their original intent?

            8) Why did his Government not persue the issue of the transfer to land ownership in Tuckers Town?

            9) Why did his Government bring in the UIghers?

            10) Why did his almost all of his Government’s projects go so over budget that we will have that debt to carry for Generations to come?

            11) Why did his Government build so many white elephant projects with annual operating expenses that can’t financially be supported?

I just don’t understand how you people don’t get it! You say HE made it a race issue? Did you read the speech? Do you understand the difference between being a Black Politician and White? He simply highlighted what most of you are either too dumb to realize or the refuse to acknowledge, this island’s is controlled by a certain group of people who will stop at nothing to paint a picture that if you are not careful you will hate the oppressed and love the oppressor.

      • Hurricane says:

@ Mixitup, in order for them to get it, “they” have to want to get it and don’t want to.

The tropes about a suspect’s behavior extend far beyond whether or not he or she sleeps, and into the anecdotal literature around police interrogation.”

This man ( dreb ) was that start of all the economic disaster that a lot of Bermudians feel to this day!!! What is really sad is, that those that support him the most, are suffering the most??? And what is even more hilarious is the fact that he with a straight face can stand up there and blow smoke up the very a$$’ $ , that he absolutely refused to support when TWO of his very own staff wanted to join them???? In fact FIRED them??? My God the supporters of him are absolutely beyond HELP????????

Well all I can say to those that believe his bile is go ahead & ‘move heaven and earth’ to support these bozos and help the PLP get back in power and see where it leads you. The first thing Dr. Ewart Brown brings to the forefront is the colour of a mans skin. How about all the Bermudians that are of mixed blood Dr. Ewart Brown? Are they to love one a deceive the other parent? You, my friend are full of quotes made by Dr. Martin Luther King and nothing of your own. So please, before any of my fellow Bermudians “jump out of a pot and into the fire” do think for yourself. Yah bet you do.

      • Come Correct says:

        So does a sociopath.

      • Unfortunate says:

In all due respect what am I reading? When did one of the most divisive leaders in our history become the voice of reason? Is this not the same person who ousted out a seating premier immediately after an election and said “we had to deceive you”. Now is quick to say the OBA government has deceived you. Did you not do the same? How easy it is to ask the PLP defectors to come home. What home? Is this the same home that did not have the decency to even notify Mr. Horton that his ministerial job was taken from him before he left home for work. Is this the same family that could not apologize to Mr. Butler for deceiving him and the party about bringing in the uighur into the country illegally? The same family who are trying to assassinate the character of Mr. Lister in recent childish editorial rants? Was this in an effort to bring him back home?

I have a challenge, apologize. You reconnect first with the people you let down. This is your revised version of the ALS challenge. Publicly apologize to all of those who you and your party have deceived. Publicly apologize to those who believed in you and your party and watched a real separation in race relations. Publicly apologize to those , including me, who encouraged their peers to get out and vote only to see a mess unfold in front of their eyes. I encourage all of you to accept the challenge. Then let’s see if the bucket of your cold ways is something you could handle yourself. Other then that, I’m off this train.

If you could chooses members from both party who represent the best interest of the country, then I’ll go for that. You could sign me up for that idea today. Unfortunately you can’t. You have two options and I just can’t wrap my head around going back, not yet not now. The wounds of the last decade of divisiveness and deception are still to fresh to forgive.

I’ll at least consider listening if Dale Butler, Randy Horton or Kim Wilson if they were the party leader. At least I could believe what they say. Integrity goes a long way, you/we could learn something from them.

  10. Kim Webb says:

This is sad! A very serious case of the pot calling the kettle black. Does this man remember that he was one of the major players in running our country down. Why do you think our people got him out of government!? Because he was so bad for Bermuda. If there is silence it is because we have a government In power trying to bring our island back from the brink. Look at all of the good that is happening in tourism. We have new hotels going up. We have money being invested in our island again because their is confidence that we have a stable government. Nothing will happen overnight . We need money to run our island and to invest in our people. Dr. Brown was hugely responsible for where we are now! And now…here he is again stirring the pot and inciting my people to try and being down the one good thing that has happened to this island in so many years! I just so hope that the people will turn their backs on him once again because they remember where they were and take a good look at where we are going now. We have a chance to bring all of the good back to this island, for everyone. If you want to leave an island that was is dire straights to your children, then yes, follow this man. You will get what you truly deserve. Sorry Dr Brown, my vote is to let the OBA do what they are doing, which is lift my home back up and help ALL of our people, Black and white alike! Stay strong All, we are on the right path!

    DR Brown

More of the same as when you were in power.

Your vision for this country did not work when you were at the helm and the economy was moving forward on auto pilot

What in gods good name do you think you or your colleagues have to offer now to get this country turned around and run in a fashion that resemble a modern first world place

Please silence the rhetoric so we can move forward

There are tens of thousands of Bermudians that are not buying your position including the future young Bermuda voting block.

We want to look forward not back.

OBA. Get with the program and start making changes and articulating your vision to the public so we know what your future plans are. We sense things are improving but you must stand up and talk to us

PLP until you have a message that includes unity for Bermudians of all classes creeds and orientations you will struggle to realize Dr Browns desire to take back GVT.

It’s very simple. Change or get left behind.

    • mj says:

The people will not have to be brainwashed if there is any sincerity coming from the OBA and any improvement they will obviously not be considered the enemy, however seems like some people can’t point out exactly what is the difference between the two parties.. OBA are running the Government right now so why fear someone who was in power TWO PREMIERS ago!!! It seems so easy to critize any oppposition rather than highlight some facts about the improvement in the last 2 years under brand new government.. they must be jealous plp gets more props, more comments and they have to be stronger because no one has their back or protects them from trollers.whenever there is a plp article it gets more comments than anyother… very interesting…

      • LOL (Original TM*) says:

That is only due to the outlandish sh!$ they talk in those articals. They usually show their hate for the “enemy” (you PLP supporters words not anyone elses) in those pieces and they generally accuse whites of something or other. Infact they spout stright up insults and distain for our fellow Bermudians that it boggles the mind to even think these PLPers are capable of anything like “unity” with other Bermudians collectively at all as all they do is create a hostile enviroment. Think about this they always say that white are uncomfortable talking about some topics but its not white at all it’s the reaction from blacks that causes the “uncomfortable condition.

LOL people need to get out of their own way or progress wont happen at all.

  26. umjusayin says:

The OBA must be paying overtime to their bloggers to cover the Dr.Brown story (really sad). I guess some of their toes were trodden on. #thetruth

Well said Dr.Brown; we needed to hear this.

As the OBA cookie crumbles I wonder where we will find the large pieces. I know for sure the Bermudian people might be lucky enough to get the crumbs.

I wonder what the current debt situation is in Bermuda now. In 19 months they seem to have surpassed the previous administration 5 year debt accumulation. But of course their bad spending habits, no real financial plan and promotion of the OBA friends and family package are the fault of the PLP. # wakeupbermuda!

    • Trulytruly says:

No pay needed just passionate disgust for an individual that caused more harm than good for bermuda and has the nerve to show his face so eagerly.

    • Hang up and call again says:

Just out of curiosity, what evidence do you have that the OBA have been spending indiscriminately? While the OBA should be held accountable for their actions, what accountability is there for the PLP’s reckless spending?

      • Onion says:

The OBA has been on-budget, a massive departure from the PLP’s constant overspending.

Hopefully he’s on a flight today heading back home to the USA – away from Bermuda.

There’s no place like home – and I’d encourage him to stay there.

  28. anyone surprised? says:

Someone commented to me recently that the PLP wanted to be back in power at all costs – That they cared nothing for economic recovery, for unity, or doing the right thing, or for any other galvanizing buzz-words and phrases. Simply put, they just want to be back in power no matter what the cost, and will do anything to get it, including sacrificing the economic stability and future of this country. I was skeptical, I guess my mind did not work in that divisive and separatist way, I mean why do this? everyone loses. I am not so sure now, and fear the scary times ahead of us.

    • Trulytruly says:

Hence the calls for somehow regaining power before the next election??? Same thrust as Marc bean. Surprise surprise. I don’t need to wonder why. I know why they are desperate to derail the govt. if you heard the nervous attempts in the House asking about investigations into a prior govt you would know they are worried stiff what is about to come out.

In fact have been outright nasty to any black person that thinks conservative ????? I will not hold my breath while I await your response, better yet, why don’t you hold yours until you do????

Dr. Brown NOW finally realizes that it was HIS self-centered, elitist, racially divisive, anti-international business, free-spending, friends & family plan, personal attack tactics/strategies that caused many PLP supporters from abstaining in the 2012 election. NOW he is begging PLP supporters to rush back into the fold and overthrow the current Govt.. He realizes PRCs must NOT be allowed to get status, (even though it was PLP legislation that allowed this). He does not want the PLP to change. He wants it to remain a divisive party lead by a group of well educated elite Black Bermudians manipulators (like himself) who live the high life & poke fun at the old UBP oligarchy to keep their followers resentments burning. PLP don’t care if the economy tanks, no jobs for Bermudians, International companies leave, no money for charities, massive Govt. debt, Bermudians emigrating, not many tourists = ALL UBPs FAULT…

    • Troy says:

    • Paz says:

Bermuda produces nothing on its own. Local Bermuda businesses rise and fall with the success and failures of IB and tourism. These sectors depend on the performance of the world economy.

Bermuda needs to understand the value of IB to the country. IB profits are not made because of anything Bermuda has done, except to provide a tax-free environment. Bermuda cannot justify taxes on these profits. What Bermuda does deserve is local employment opportunities, payroll taxes, good corporate citizens, rents, cab fares, dinners, etc. etc. All of these Bermuda receives.

There will be dire consequences to the country if Bermuda toys with the IB sector, the country’s main economic engine, that results in its decline on the island. The standard of living for the entire country will drop significantly.

It goes without saying that there will be many who are brainwashed and because Dr. Brown says something they feel that it is true. His content is ludicrous as most of us know however, it is very easy for him to be the manipulator at this point.
The OBA needs to step up to the plate and clearly define why the content is ludicrous and why it is a manipulating ploy on his part.

Why should anyone from the OBA waste time commenting on this .
Intelligent people know it would be useless and only result in cries from the illiterate saying there’s too much mud slinging and childish bickering going on.

Err , Hello ! Who starts it all the time ?
The expression ‘damned if you do and damned if you don’t’ has been worn threadbare in the last day or two.

      • Raymond Ray says:

Absolutely true James Rego; as well as what you’ve suggested / recommend the One Bermuda Alliance doing…with facts!

we can not trust OBA or PLP, we need a new government. No Work permit limit got me out of work. Thanks a lot OBA.

  46. Coffee says:

Dr.Brown understands that the OBA /UBP are but a pretty bees nest . Every time he speaks (read throws a stone at the hive or nest ) the vicious workers bees angrily attack anything moving in the opposing direction .
Keep throwing the stones Dr.Brown , keep disturbing the angry bees who are not capable of producing honey , but instead manufacture vinegar for the consumption of the Bermudian workers of this country .

    • Hmmm says:

PLP have nothing to do with Labour. Dr Brown has nothing to do with Labour. The union withdraws labour, takes millions and pays pennies. where are their 2011,2012,2013 audited financials?

How about Bermuda waking up to realize these groups have been playing you.

just because they make noise does not mean they are for you.

      • Coffee says:

Well , true to form … Here goes one of the angry little bees !

        • Hmmm says:

            LOL

  47. Ringmaster says:

“A small tax would wipe out our Government debt situation…” This may be true, but it is another of the PLP’s acts that has made sure it can’t happen. Paula Cox extended the act for tax exemption for another 25 years. To try and change that would be the ultimate deception and loss of trust for a Government.
Thanks to the PLP, Bermudians now have little financial control over themselves. Big overseas banks own what were banks run by Bermudians and also hold the Government debt. International Business keeps those jobs for Bermudians and without IB there would be very few jobs, except for fishermen and farmers. Bermuda, in one way or another, has always been and always will be 100% dependent on non Bermudians. Unfortunately the PLP do not understand this.

  49. James Herald says:

The man is an attention seeker – he just wants to try and weasel his way back in for round two.

He clearly thinks the PLP are gullible enough to give him another go.

    No shame, no conscience.

  50. Encyclopedia says:

It is a known fact that OBA won because some PLP voters stayed home. It is not expected they will stay home again and so the OBA has to bring in new voters through the PRC route. Otherwise they will be a one term government for the foreseeable future.

Although I am not an admirer of Dr Brown, his arguments are logical and well reasoned and, most importantly, most voters know in their hearts that he spoke the truth.

  51. Sat Whaaat???? says:

The ultimate irony of last night]s speech by the X-Premier is the fact that Dr. Ewart Brown, the special guest speaker at the BIU’s 33 annual labour day banquet, is currently fighting tooth and nail to deny workers at his local businesses UNION REPRESENTATION by the BIU! That is a fact! Don’t believe me? Ask any one of his employees!

  52. Buckingham Palace says:

Dr.Brown will stir up the radical base of the PLP into a divide and conquer mode. The blind followers and workers who are struggling will blame the “evil ” OBA. The good will sit by and watch as the poor suffer even more. The OBA will get the blame even though it is not their fault. The massive debt caused by overruns, incompetence and fiscal mismanagement will be forgotten. Bermuda will lose investment in all form, but the objective will be met. The PLP back in power resulting in a highly paid, unaccountable political class. The middle class will no longer exist as their income will be wiped out through taxes to support the new political elite.Flashy cars, and showmanship will abound. Of course the Unions and The a People’s Campaign will say nothing. They will be getting theirs! Our dollar will be devalued and we Bermudians will be prisoners for years to come. Independence will come. Those with nothing will not mind, and the rich will leave.Crime will rise along with unemployment
Of course all of the above can be avoided, but will it?

Remember that? Boy, Bermuda Politics sure is weird at times.

    • Creme Brûlée says:

Weird is the operative word when it comes to those two: I believe Dunkley was Mid Ocean Club President when a Brown joined, in fact I would not be surprised if he sponsored him.

  57. Sofie says:

My My My…. I have said it before nothing is free other than the air we breathe, all the freebies the Hon Dr Brown gave,Nursery school, school buses, cars,Land tax some has to pay for this.
Oh I can make a list how are you allowed to have a IN licence plate I bet you have never put anything in the (Private Car ) that resembles anything trucking!!!!
Your cousin Donal Smith giving him the emissions control at TCD what a Joke take it back what a lot of money he made.
You have a score to settle what a shame as you are a bright man.
Giving city residents a vote in the COH shame shame shame the owner and tax payers never had a vote, but everyone in the Salvation Shelter had a vote.
For the average company if you bring in two workmen we need two permits you bring in a whole choir of 40 plus did they have to pay for 40 permits no… I could go on this is all fact no hatred,no colour raised in my write up just plain fact.Remember when the BA looked under the hood of the car we in in more debt than we ever imagined, test we still have no accountability, there are heads of Govt departments, taking customers out on driving lessons all through the day and making good money and still getting a govt pay check
Some Govt depts staff had 60 sick days..the Sage report was stinging and real….

  58. Rights for All says:

This is a specch written and delivered by a very asute politician. He knows what his intended audience wants to hear; he stokes up the emotions; preys on fears and yet says nothing that will help them. A lot of the speech was about himself. He wants the workers to take back power. This from a millionaire businessman. Did the workers have power under the PLP apart from those few at the top?
There was nothing said to help unemployed workers.
There was nothing said to create jobs.
There was nothing said to pay off debt.
There was nothing said to expand the economy.

The only thing that was said was return the PLP to power, by any means, but no reasons given why and how this will help the workers. Pure political fluff, but loved by most of the audience.

    • Toodle-oo says:

    • Unbelievable says:

I’m an OBA supporter and I have to say that the OBA have been a mess so far. They have a tough job to do but they could have be a lot smarter on how to go about doing it. Their PR is terrible and their way of going about doing things just seems to amateurish sometimes. However, I support what they need to do. I do not believe they are suppressing Bermudians in any way.

Having said that, what makes anyone even think that the PLP are any different from when the lost the election in 2012? The speech above is STILL the same tired line they have been trotting out for so many years. It’s a prime example of political posturing with no meat on the bones.

We really have to ask,”what exactly does the PLP have to offer that is new?”

    • Creme Brûlée says:

His speeches are always about himself!

    • Terry says:

      Spot on “Rights For All”.

  59. Come On Man says:

We must remember this is a person who can sell you a car without any wheels or an Engine. Only his loyal, brainwashed followers would fall for it.

  60. Faith says:

After reading this it’s pretty apparent that Dr. Brown thinks the people and voting constituency of Bermuda are a bunch of fools who can’t look past the color of one’s skin for anything. It’s clear he can’t.

It’s sad to have so many quotes from such an esteemed man as D. King who worked to see ALL races view each other through colorblind eyes used in this manor. A disgrace really.

All I am see is race bating for power and control, nothing more. To say we need to re-elect the PLP before all is lost makes me wonder what in this another world he’s talking about. Who is WE is exactly? Me thinks that refers to a select few…you know who you are.

May our future be merciful regardless of our foolishness.

  61. Bermudians make the Diference says:

    @RingMaster,

Would it be plausible to offer an investment opportunity to the exempt companies to be involved in investing in Bermuda. It does not have to be a direct tax but it will provide more stability in the jurisdiction that you have invested in and are receiving returns from. Create the grounds for debate as we do have some very intelligent heads in this island. Privatization isn’t the answer. It is a share in the burden to clean up the neighborhood up instead of just your house. They are familiar faces to us so sitting down at the table would not be new to us. Offer some caveats for growing Bermuda even if what we need is just the financial return to grow. We all have a stake in it together. It just does not hurt to ask. We are where – we are.

Our local foreign investment vs More People on Island.

Foreign Investment can be used to encourage growth in Bermuda but why not encourage it through the friends and companies that we already have on island. Bermuda’s economy for foreign investment is not limited to company creations by new entities but can be further used as investment opportunities like the Chinese have done for Bahamas and the Caribbean.

These investment opportunity purposes can be divided into three categories: prohibited, restricted and encouraged.

    1. Prohibited foreign investments include projects that: are harmful to state security or that impair the public interest; pollute the environment, are destructive to natural resources and detrimental to human health; or occupy excessive farmland and are unfavorable to the protection and development of land resources.

    2. Restricted foreign investments include projects that are: lagging technologically; unfriendly to resources and the environment; involve the exploitation of specific minerals that are protected by the state; or classified as industries that the government is opening up in phases.

3 Encouraged foreign investments, mainly include:

    a. Projects related to new agricultural technology, construction and the operation of energy sources, transportation and the exploitation of raw materials for certain industries;

    b. Projects using new or advanced technology, including those that can improve product quality, save energy and raw materials, increase economic efficiency and alleviate shortages in the domestic market;

    c. Projects that meet international market demand to improve or add value to the industry;

    d. Projects that involve the integrated use of Bermuda’s resources or renewable resources,involving new technology or equipment for preventing and controlling environmental pollution;

    e. Projects related to certain modern services; and

    f. Projects that can develop the manpower and resources of Bermuda and its people.

Why is China investing in the Caribbean but overlooking BERMUDA ? Something is really wrong over here. We get billed for all our major projects but foreign investors find it more fitting to invest in other jurisdictions. Why ? I would ask myself over and over again. Why ? Is it the way our Government is doing business ? Then ask yourself ? What do you think ? Are we got all rookies over here with no clue how to conduct business ?

Only because of what the PLP and the good Dr. did .
      India, China..he’s been there.

      OBA has the mouthwash.

      Just takes time.

      Ps.Dont’ forget the Yoogurs.

What was good for me will be in 20 years good for ‘Yooguys’.
      I need a rum.

      • Ringmaster says:

@Bermudians make the Difference. It’s not that simple. The closest IB has come to investing in Bermuda is building offices. AIG, ACE XL and Bacardi for example. Now there is a surplus of office space so no need to build their own.
IB also operates in the worldwide competitive markets. Their money moves where it makes most sense for that business to the Board of Directors and the Shareholders. Apart from the costs of business such as payroll tax and healthcare, IB spends millions of dollars annually in charitable contributions scholarships, sponsorship and gifts. Most are given without publicity.
Local politics are only of interest if they work against IB. When that happens they downsize or move. That is where the PLP appears not to have learned from the past.

You mention China and investments in the Caribbean. They are investing hundreds of millions, and billions, in infrastructure, hotels etc. However that money will never come here for one simple reason. The BIU. The first requirement of Chinese investment is that they use their own workers for those projects. No locals need apply. The BIU would never allow that even if it meant 1,000 local jobs to be filled after construction.

    • Double D says:

Be careful what you wish for.

Look at the numerous Chinese investments in African and the Caribbean.

When they build they bring in their own labor from home and displace the locals as part of the “investment.”

All this time I got the impression that you guys are vehemently against imported labor.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

What a load of meaningless fluff!!! Agriculture in Bermuda! Yeah…RIGHT. We don’t even have enough open land left to equal less than half of one Kansas cornfield.

Some folks really do believe that this little speck in the Atlantic with some 60,000, less than your average small town, clinging to it, is really important to the rest of the world.

Think again. If we sank tomorrow we would be off the news feeds by Tuesday.

Some of us seem to think that Bermudians are Gods gift to planet Earth. Get over yourselves.

  62. Lol says:

Dr who? What a sorry joke u be.

  63. roger says:

To Strike fund, Dr. Brown gave his valued speech for free.
There is room for some here in BDA to be Politically mature & others more politically mature. After that the PLP will be the Government again. Dr. Brown brought out that need. Good reaching out to the people Dr. Brown :) . The food was Good too, & I wouldn’t have gained weight from it. Thanks BIU & Fairmont.

  64. nomoremoney says:

Ewart still stuck on the UBP stuff, because…its easy rhetoric, and it works. Unite and reconnect, was not intended for the whole island, but for his party. Under his leadership people felt like your either with us or against us. Tribal politics has become the norm, in part thanks to Ewart, He was a very divisive Premier, although he did good as well. I think he is very suspicious of others, and thats not a good place to come from.

There is no question that the PLP leadership of the day including Brown/Cox was not not paying attention to the economic indicators, and if they were, then they were scared to act. Several hundred million shortfall in payroll tax years in a row,, evaporating jobs etc etc falls at the feet of the last PLP leadership. The American recession combined with the growing rhetoric and unwelcoming tone to expats and their companies was at a peak, and only worsened the free falling economy.

and so now we have…..a disgraced and failing party in power. I’m not sure of Dunkleys ability, but to date its photo ops, nothing in the way of direction or strategy, and I don’t mean promises, because what we need is plans and a direction. We need a leader, one with VISION of where this country needs to go, and will speak openly about it, at this point what’s to lose. The next election is already decided, its a PLP victory, and I’m glad for that, but what real leadership will we get? Again, we need somebody with a vision.

We need a Leader that brings this country together.

I think the public is hungry/ starving for such leadership, but will we ever have it.

  65. Coffee says:

Terry come back , you are a valuable member of the PLP and have much to offer . It must be cold outside , come back , there is and will always be a place for you at the table . If your future aspirations include politics , you will not be voted back in as a Independant or as a candidate for the OBA/UBP so don’t be tempted .
Randy , I’m sorry but the voters in your constituency didn’t put their faith in you for the benefit of the OBA/UBP ! Indeed most are appalled at the voracious and self serving circumstance in which you accepted the role as Speaker of the House . Do better , give it up and humbly put your feet fully back under the table of the PLP .
Dr.Brown spoke directly to the two of you and admonished you … “Those who have a ear , let him hear and not just be a hearer of the word , but may he also be a do’er .”

  66. OnFire says:

Whatever we do in the voting booth – we have to work on solutions for our country. It won’t matter if we have an OBA or PLP Government if we cannot provide for our citizens. Dr. Brown’s speech and Premier Dunkley’s presence both demonstrate a lack of fear in our Bermudian leaders. I love that. They both say “Bring it on.” I am proud of my fellow Bermudians.

Now all we need are a few good ideas to support…

  67. Unbelievable says:

Then let the bucket of your cold ways is something you could handle yourself.

    • Raymond Ray says:

I want to thank you “Unbelievable” for your letter of “truths and consequences”. It’s a shame witnessing some Bermudians are still willing to follow people like Dr. Ewart Brown and Reverend Tweed…Right to hell!
What many are overlooking is this one vitally important fact, they both can go back to America and live their lives like kings because as I’d mentioned before, they’re gifted with the gift of gab and have nothing to lose :-(
Now, as for Mr. Randy Horton and Mr. Terry Lister, they are both valuable pieces on the table and all we can pray for is that they don’t allow the Dr. to persuade them to come back to the Progressive Labour Party…

      • Coffee says:

At least they could freely go as you say “back to America ” . I have a funny feeling that you fit in a category of “real Bermudians ” according to Toni Daniels, who may have some difficulty with the U.S Homeland Security .
As for following people to hell …. I’ve noticed that you had the disgraced former UBP/OBA premiers back right up until the rug was pulled from beneath his feet !
We need to have the Craig Cannonier conversation , avoiding it will not make the travesty go away . Mr.Ray , if you have time , please write a frank opinion piece on the rise and the unceremonious fall of a disgraced Bermudian leader been as you have a problem with the Americanized influences of Dr.Brown and Rev.Tweed . It maybe that you have the inside scoop and going by your many ‘likes’ every time you post on any subject , it is no secret that your opinions resonate in a tremendously positive way with the legions of UBP/OBA support base .

      • Coffee says:

What a telling statement by the paid OBA/UBP TROLL , Raymond Ray . Succinctly he manages to turn the UBP /OBAs used knickers inside out for all to see and to understand the funky way in which certain people in this country are (1) thought of and (2) used as collateral and chattel .

Understand people what this troll has said , and more importantly the context and deep meaning that was unintentionally revealed and conveyed to the wider audience that speaks clearly to the mindset of the people and organization this troll by definition and extention represents .

I repeat verbatim the words of this dangerous troll ” Now, as for Mr. Randy Horton and Mr. Terry Lister, they are both valuable pieces on the table “.

I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether or not this troll is speaking of Randy and Terry as people , or is he speaking of animate objects to be used at will …. Remember , those are Raymond Ray’s words articulated as he thinks .

  68. World Traveller. says:

  71. Jeremy Deacon says:

I am not a Doc Brown fan – he wanted to put me and a lot of other people out of work when I was at the RG.
having said that – he is right about the OBA being single minded and the PLP has to do the same.
So IMO they get a leader and a deputy who is acceptable to all on the Island and who don’t scare the s**t out of us; they have policies that are acceptable to the island; they represent minority groups (LGBT etc)effectively and that they pursue policies that do not put the average Bermudian into a cycle of debt that they can never get out of

  72. WOW he went deep on you fools says:

DAMMMMMMMMMMMMMM DR. Brown. You have the Trolls of the UBP/OBA really mad today LOLOLOLOLOL.

  73. Paz says:

If you like political pandering, this is an excellent speech. It is also highly shameful.

Shameful for invoking Dr. King, the bible, God and Nelson Mandela. Their struggles are not those of current day Bermuda.

Shameful for thinking that the only “ordinary, everyday” people are those in the BIU. Those in tourism and international business work hard every day and are just as ordinary. If they make more money then so be it. Our economy dictates that the more valuable the work, the higher the compensation.

Shameful for supporting the unholy alliance between the PLP and the unions. The PLP will support giving an unfair, unwarranted share of the country’s economic output to the unions and, in turn, the unions will vote for the PLP. This is no way to run a country.
Shameful for suggesting that Paula Cox cannot find a job because she is black.

Shameful for characterizing the OBA’s support of a black leader as another form of white prejudice. Really? Mr. Cannonier deserves much more respect and credit than Dr. Brown gives him. The OBA is trying to be inclusive with respect to race.

Shameful for supporting the perpetuation of the PLP as a black party concerned with the interests of the black community only. This is the attitude of the old and jaded. The young do not support the segregation of people by race, religion, sexual preference or other means of differentiation. They have moved on. You should too. When can we expect a white leader of the PLP? Until that is a possibility, the PLP will remain a party to support black interests and not those of the country as a whole.

  74. roger says:

Did Mr brown renounce his US citizenship to become the Bermudian premier?? Is that not part of the Bermudian constitution??? i.e that you must not be an American citizen to hold Bermudian office.
If that’s the case ….how is he able to reside in America NOW. Is he simply traveling on a 3 or 6 month visa????… did he receive his citizenship back from the US government…how did this occur? Jus’ sayin’

    • Wanderer says:

Roger, perhaps he has had his US citizenship reinstated. Or perhaps he is just settling for an American “green card”. Since he is married to a US citizen, US residency would be pretty much automatic. This last option gives him the best of both worlds, so I suspect he has kept his Bermudian citizenship just in case (perish the thought) he becomes active in Bermuda politics again. I’m quaking in my boots just thinking about that possibility!

      • Navin Johnson says:

get his green card back and be subject to tax on his worldwide income? no way…..

    • Terry says:

      ask the US State Department.
      The Uighurs comes to mind.
      You follow me?

  75. Dr. Brown — who served as Premier from 2006 – 2010 — called “for an organized effort to take back the government,” saying “we must return the government to the PLP.” – Almost sounding like a call for a coup d’état. I guess he the PLP & the Combined Opposition can’t wait three more years to try to win it at the polls, desperation much?! Just more Brown Noise to me!

Like we need the PLP back in so that they can complete their unfinished work of making Bermuda a Third world Country by 2020. The new Oligarchy, Dr. Brown included can’t wait to be our Kings while we their ‘subjects’ bow and scrape for crumbs from their table. He can GTH.

  76. Marge, says:

Doctor Brown, enjoy your trip back to your homeland in the US today….
I think you have done enough damage to our Island….I think your sheeples want to say flock off…

  77. Sofie says:

Iam a little confused… This was a rally for the BIU,so why would Dr Brown be allowed to speak with such negativity about how the election was won,Craig Caonnier and all the rest considering there were OBA members present.. Just wondering.

    • Wanderer says:

Sofie, the man has no moral compass (or if he has, it’s broken), so he wouldn’t care who he offends with his language. He cares for nobody but himself and is still trying to settle old scores, not being the least bit concerned about who is hurt along the way, no matter their colour or station in life. I’m sure he cares not WHY people get excited about his reappearance, only the fact that they DO!

  78. Alvin Williams says:

When the white community abandons it herd mentality when it comes to voting than perhaps we can talk about a united country. Until than the black community has no choice but to unite and reconnect. If we don’t look after our own interests who will? We can not expect others to do so for us and I don’t have any faith that this anti-Bermudian one term OBA government is on any path that is going to serve the interests of my people and therefore the strong will carry the weak as we set upon the task of liberating our country.

  79. St.David says:

    Gilbert Pitcher.
You are right. The PLP pretends to support the poor and working class. When they were the govt the people they say they support, suffered.
Friends and family got huge unbidded govt contracts and made themselves wealthy. The rest of us paid for it and were left fighting over the crumbs from their table!
Hopefully there are enough sensible people to see right through the rhetoric. The OBA is the only hope for our children!

  80. Wake up says:

The PLP like any other political party is not perfect. They like other Governments made mistakes and that is evoidenced by ithe world wide financial crisis. It is in that tcontext i that one should form their opinion about the financial wisdom of the Former Government. The difference between the Bernews headline and reporting and the headlines and reporting elsewhere as in relates to the content of the speech proves that a lot of what Dr. brown was saying is correct.

  81. don’t let him do it!

  82. Let's Go Bermuda says:

Desperation stakes BUI/PLP? Must be to want to bring back someone who lead the destruction of the economy…to say “we must return the government to the PLP.” Really? How many of us Bermudians want things to get better, instead of worse? I vote for better.

  83. James Herald says:

We need to re-connect yes – but not with you.

  84. Lisa Henderson says:

He didn’t say vote for him. He said get our act together before there is nothing left!! He is right on that one!! The past will be our worst enemy if we don’t let it go and unite!!

  85. nomoremoney says:

Beware of privatization says Brown…OMG…did he really say that? He was the driving force of privatisation and healthy competition as he calls it. Remember mini buses, private ferry service etc. He was all about taking it out of gov hands. SMH. Pandering to the Union. He must really want to be back in the game.

  86. Anon says:

Questions that didn’t get asked during the Banquet but should have been

    1) Why did The PLP create over $2billion dollars in debt a well as leave the pension funds underfunded by another $2billion?

    2) Why did the PLP increase the size of the civil service to a level that what unsupportable?

    3) What plans does the PLP have to reduce our current debt going forward without reducing. The size of the civil service or cutting costs?

    4) Why did the PLP encourage existing international business to leave taking 5,000 staff and dependant with them?

    5) Why did the PLP discourage investment in our own island by having Bermudians married to non-Bermudians require licences in order to buy property in their own country?

    6) Why is the PLP not acknowledging that the reason the average Bermudian is suffering now is as a direct result of his Governments policies?

    7) Why did the PLP write legislation that would give Bermudian citizenship to PRCs if that was not their original intent?

    8) Why did the PLP not persue the issue of the transfer to land ownership in Tuckers Town?

    9) Why did the PLP bring in the UIghers?

    10) Why did his almost all the PLP projects go so over budget that we will have that debt to carry for Generations to come?

    11) Why did the PLP build so many white elephant projects with annual operating expenses that can’t financially be supported?

  87. The Oracle says:

Firstly, the requisite disclaimer: I am black Bermudian, not affiliated to either party – simply an educated free-thinker speaking my truth.

I see Dr Brown as a revolutionary, so his speech is not shocking. But he conceals his radical agenda behind his racialised rhetoric because he knows that no true revolution – one which originates from the working class – would ever succeed in Bermuda. Instead he (and most of his elite, foreign-educated contemporaries who returned to the island to tell us what’s best for us) used and manipulated the working class voters to gain power and exploited that power whilst in government to exact his own version of revenge and to REPLACE the white oligarchy. But collectively they failed to DO BETTER than the white oligarchy – by changing the unfair, biased, racialised system of government, economy and institutions. Instead we had 14 years of a black elitist political class who feathered their own nests and made deals for friends and family, justified in their actions ‘because the white man did it’. Once Brown got what he wanted he stepped down as Premier without having to face the electorate at the next election (the only true way to hold our politicians accountable under the Westminster system). Paula Cox paid the political price by being the first sitting Premier unseated at a General Election – the irony is not lost that she, like so many Bermudians, cannot find work.

But our hope for change that lead to the historic victory of 1998 was for a better, more equal Bermuda society. This never materialised. Individual success and speed of change was heralded as ‘progress’ to the detriment of collective progress and ‘progressive’ policies (as in Progressive Labour Party) and accountability and due diligence. That’s what the people of Bermuda are still crying for, although it is often expressed in the wrong sentiment: instead of affirming what we want (freedom, equality, peace, better education/job prospects) we decry against what we don’t want / don’t like / don’t understand (e.g. PRCs, foreigners, gays, etc).

Make no mistake, when the doctor says ‘by any means’ he has no respect for our political customs or constitution, especially now that he is on the outside. This is all part of a bigger plan to ‘steal’ the government before any findings into past issues is released so that they (PLP elites) can suppress it and eventually find a way to ‘force’ independence so they can gain power for life. The PLP is for power by any means necessary, not for all the people of Bermuda. Neither party is offering what the people truly want and need so we are stuck with the black-white divide when truly the divide in Bermuda is between: rich and poor / educated and uneducated / land-owning and non land-owning. But you won’t hear that in a Dr Brown speech.

Insightful, thoughtful and well-presented. Thank you. I agree, but could never say it as eloquently as you have.

    • Raymond Ray says:

At “The Oracle” Wow! I can only pray / hope people understand what it is you’ve written…for everyones benefit.

    • Terry says:

The irony in Oracle’s well presented, truthful and relevant summation of a clear headed well thought out and simple read is the fact that it done with such non=inflammatory leads.

      Well done.

And thanks for presenting my thoughts.

      Shalom.

    • Lol says:

You have impressed the same type of people that you assume Dr. Brown deceived. You started out pretty good then became nothing more than a mercurial conspiracy theorist.

  88. Rockfish#1and#2 says:

They understood that it would be difficult, if not impossible to win an election in Bermuda with a white leader, so what did they do? They found Black ones. I say that because it is true,” said Dr. Brown.

So!Are we to assume Zane DeSilva will be a candidate for the leadership of the PLP at the next conference?

    • Cleancut says:

Yes, but the problem was they never came across the right black leader able to lead a party. When the black leader was dropped, the opposition would cry “Surrogate” and the black ex leader would cry “Bogyman”

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

      LMAO!!!!

  89. Linda Bugg says:

    Dear Paz (and others),

I don’t want to be arrogant! But you are wrong on so many levels! First of all, Martin Luther King represented all people whose rights were being violated. Blacks were at the forefront because their civil liberties were violated most. White women benefited in a big way from the Civil Rights Movement – that is no secret. It can be found in many history books.

The rights of Black and White Bermudians should be represented. At the same time, you are either in denial or lying if you believe that Bermuda is a post-racial society. Yes, the old white guard in Bermuda was more considerate than the foreign corporations that seem to be in power today. That old guard knew our fathers, mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers were decent hard working folk. They left us with some dignity. But that doesn’t mean our liberties were not violated (albeit not always obvious) than. We may not have all of the same problems as America…but money is the bottom line for those rapidly taking away our country today. Our racial issues are still not always obvious, but we are a country at war with itself while big corporations seem to have no sensitivity to our people, culture, land, small businesses, history etc. Yes, the PLP messed up…after never being in power during the history of party politics in Bermuda. Of course, they did! Now the question is, how do we heal? Yes, our country is worth fighting for. We need to forgive and move forward (especially those of us who are Christians). Stop living in the past and forgive. Maybe the PLP should change its name. Whatever we do, we have to come together!! We need to recognize and get rid of that sense of entitlement we carry! We need to demand the right to hold on to our culture and fight hard to protect our businesses, land, standard of living, rights liberties, country, homes and future for our children. We are a small island. We can do it!

  90. Silence Do Good says:

Doc Brown at it again. He is the reason I am a form PLP supporter. I care nothing for what he says, his thoughts or opinions. Keep bring him around and you will only distance me further.

  91. St.David says:

    The Oracle.
    On the money!

  92. MAKE MY DAY says:

Bermuda…. If you even THINK about voting the PLP back into Gov’t – then you had all better make sure your British passports are current and you have previously sold your existing property’(s) – because the Island WILL be totally bankrupt and also become a real *Banana Republic* under their MISSmanagement!!!

You won’t even get any investment $$$ from 3rd world countries!! You had 14 LONG years to learn your lesson with the Progressive Losers Party and I hope you have learned it well!!!

These clowns (PLP) will NEVER be able to manage anything successfully!! The IB sector will quickly relocate and you already know that *Tourism* is in-the-toilet!! Ready to go back to “farming and fishing”???

  93. cromwell says:

As a man sees himself he believes himself to be what he says about him self! Is the Doctor different or behaves differently today than he did almost a decade ago?

From his speech he obviously still believes that the end justify the means which got him in trouble in the first place!

He calls for a new PLP reality which he defines in his speech from his own self justification based on his experience.

Although the speech was well received by his audience was it just his age speaking or is the new reality in Bermuda now different than what is seen through Dr. Brown and MS.Furberts eyes.

Even when your older you can still live in the past and not recognize that change has already happened!

  94. Ms. Poli Tician says:

Why do affluent PLP members join Mid-Ocean? Why do they join the “oligarchs” they so despise? Can someone please help me to understand this peculiar phenomenon.

While I am at it, why do affluent PLP members send their children to private schools, while asking us to be patient and support the struggling public system?

Why do affluent PLP members purchase homes in other countries, becoming a “guest” resident, yet give Bermuda’s working “guest” residents unbridled venom and grief?

Why do PLP members spew such hatred toward foreigners, yet marry a foreigner?

    Please help me to understand.

  97. Bermudians make the Diference says:

    Well spoken Oracle !!!

Your words say true and your message is clear. We need a Bermuda political vehicle which is true for the good of the people not the selected or this self serving party system.

  99. Y-Gurl says:

Looks like the police investigation (reported in the media) has gone quiet, so now Dr Evil will again raise his ugly head and spew his anti guest worker and company rhetoric all over again….spare us the re run please

  100. Need Peace says:

I would take any government other than the OBA! A bunch of propaganda spewing power hungry moguls that uses any means necessary to effect their purpose! When reading these comments i’m in doubt that they actually come from true lovers of this island and it’s people. Just paid bloggers! That’s where you will consistently lose confidence! Your government is so underhanded! They’re still using the initiatives of the previous government to make it appear that theyre their policies. The policies they are making are pissing everyone off from all spectrums! This is the worst government known to man and when they do not get re-elected it will be because of their own undoing! AND good riddance to them!! NOT A PAID BLOGGER just sick of their above the law antics!!!

    • aceboy says:

Perhaps you can explain the Grand Atlantic to all of us. One very simple example of an “achievement” of the PLP.

Underhanded? What was the “coup” that saw the demise of Jennifer Smith?

Above the law antics? LOL You have the wrong party.

  101. Dreadlocks says:

    PLP in power= Bermuda finished.

Children without hope, poverty, crime, devalued dollar, visa needed travel, uneducated populace, houses worth nothing and most of all politicians answerable to themselves.

  102. rickbda says:

Hey NEED PEACE you must have spent the last 14 years with shades on and ear phones in and listening to Bermuda is another world or listening to MC HAMMERS CAN’T TOUCH THIS

  103. Pequot1609 says:

An honest man need not defend his name. On a larger note Bermudians should be very concerned that this man is still orchestrating things behind the scenes for the PLP. he oversaw and initiated one of the darkest periods in this country and clearly has intentions to continue with his agenda which is of no benefit of Bermuda and its people!!! You all should be very concerned.just listen to his speech it is only meant to stir up emotion in like minded people and cause division. Bermuda deserves better!!!

  104. positivity says:

Don’t be fooled by well spoken words with the intention to deceive. Don’t forget that this “man” uttered the words to his fellow countrymen “I had to deceive you”. He felt no shame because he has none. He does not care about Bermuda. He was always in the background, waiting for the right time to come out and speak to his sheeple. Disgusting.

  105. Jules says:

What an insult to have this man who used the island for his personal gain and was so divisive, to speak to the party.

  106. Fed Up Bermudian says:

Ha. We need to come together, what a laugh from him. Seriously, is there anyone out there that buys that?? Oh wait, there are. Yes, we do need to come together. When will you, Ewart Brown, step up and acknowledge your part in the divisiveness that’s out there today? Admit that the only ‘big conversation’ that was ever meant was intended to be one-sided? What about your part in judging a person by their appearance alone? No? Not gonna happen? I thought not. Good riddance to bad rubbish, I hope he never comes back to politricks, but you know he’s still the puppetmaster in the PLP.

  107. Cookie Monster says:

St. David’s and Gilly, you say that friends and family made all the money and we paid for if ! Well I beg to differ , friends and family made a lot of money and we will be paying for it for the rest of our lives and so will our children! It almost makes me cry when I read Dr. Brown say we have to get the PLP back in power now and not in three years or there will be nothing left! The cookie jar is empty thanks to him and so are cookie jars for at least the next generation!

    • @ Cookie Monster,

Actually I never mentioned anything about the Friends and family and all the debt that we are saddled with (St Davids did)… but I wish I had ;-)

  108. Ahem……uhhhhhh……umum….errrr…..no…but ewart….you can sneeze cough and….

  109. Thelma Foster says:

all i have to tell you get the book FREEDOM FIGHTERS FROM MONK TO MAZUMBO the same truth was then and is today

  110. CommonSensenBda says:

AMAZING! When the PLP LOST the election in 2012, and the OBA had the opportunity to investigate “Under The Hood”, what did they find….a Bermuda that should have had BILLIONS in reserves due to the boon from 2004 to 2008, yet what did they find?

A PLP government who had managed to burn through all those funds the Island had procured during that boon, and the PLP had left us with a broken economy, a maasive debt of more than $2 BILLION, a yearly budgetary OVERSPEND of $441 MILLION DOLLARS. Remember, Premier Cox “claimed” to have started imposing a budgetary cut of $10 million per Ministry in 2010. Yet the reality was found in the reports of the Auditor General, who informed the public of the severity of the mismanagement of the public purse.

Another thing that the good doctor failed to address was why was there more than 4,000 Bermudians (predominately Black) who lost jobs during the PLP’s reign and PLEASE, SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT DID THE THEN GOVERNING PARTY PUT INTO PLACE TO MITIGATE THOSE LOSSES. WHAT WAS THE PLP’S PLAN TO GET THOSE INDIVIDUALS RE-EMPLOYED. WAS THERE ANY TALK OF GETTING RID OF THOSE PESKY FOREIGNERS WHO WERE STEALING BLACK BERMUDIANS JOBS, HOUSING, AND THOSE PRC’S ALLOWED TO RESIDE HERE FOR 25 YEARS AND BEYOND (AS THEY HAVE BEEN ADVOCATING THROUGH THEIR PARLIAMENTARIANS AND THE “PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT”

There was no plan. There was no plan to get they very companies who left through the PLP’s policies to return, but like the good doctor mentioned “Fool me once…shame on me, Fool we twice, shame on me.” That is why the largest pillar of our economy did not BELIEVE the PLP’s contrite begging to return back to our pastures.

Sorry Doctor, the VOTERS figured out that your beloved Party, had no idea not just how to fix a BROKEN economy, but the testicular fortitude necessary to stop the fiscal hemorrhaging left by his Party.

That is why the PLP LOST in 2012. Shame you never listened to your Parties own “critical” thinkers who were HONEST about the reasons why they lost the election.

  111. Food for Thought says:

I cannot believe Ewart Brown had the nerve to quote a true doctor and defender of peace: Dr. Martin Luther King.

Perhaps Mr. Brown should have read the history books a bit more… listened to Dr. King’s speeches a little more closely… opened his heart to Dr. King’s messages…

Dr. King fought for peace amongst ALL races! Dr. King would not be happy with the negative message Mr. Brown is attempting to spew all over this island.

Bermudians, Spouses of Bermudians and all the Ex-Pats who live in Bermuda, have more commonsense than you give them credit. We are ready to move FORWARD – together. Leave this island alone!
