Video: Shadow Minister On Recent Shootings
“We must come together, work with the Police and identify solutions that address the root causes of our young men targeting each other for death,” Shadow Minister for National Security Walter Roban said.
Mr. Roban was speaking after three separate shootings occurred in quick succession, with the first shooting taking place on November 11th in Devonshire, followed by another shooting outside of Somerset Cricket Club that injured four men, and then were shots fired in Mount Hill two days later.
In a statement last week, Mr. Roban said, “We stand before you here today in the wake of 3 shooting incidents, 2 on Remembrance Day at the entrance to the National Sports Center, in front of Somerset Cricket Club and last evening in the Mount Hill area of Pembroke.
“These incidences have shocked and frightened all of Bermuda especially since at least 3 people have been injured as a result. We are relieved that no one has been reported injured in the Mount Hill incident and at least 3 persons have been arrested related to the incident. This does not erase the impact this sudden elevation of gun violence has had on the community.
Mr. Roban speaking outside the House on Friday:
Mr. Roban continued, “The area I represent in Pembroke and Devonshire has seen its residence suffer the results of repeated shooting incidences with death and injures traumatizing many in the community. The hearts of people of the Glebe Road and St. Monica’s Road area goes out to these persons in Pembroke and Somerset who have beenvictimised by these latest acts of violence.
“My colleagues and I condemn those who have committed these acts and the total disregard for the law they have shown. Also the fear and pain this has brought those who witnessed what happened and to those who were injured. As stated on Tuesday, the shootings are a painful reminder that laws and policing are not enough to stem the scourge of gun violence.
“Bermudians of all walks of life share our disgust, outrage and anger about events. Despite this, we must come together, work with the Police and identify solutions that address the root causes of our young men targeting each other for death.
“Our prayers are with the victims of the shootings and their families and we urge calm in spite of these horrific acts.
“We asked anyone who has seen or knows something related to any of these incidents to say something. Cooperate with the Police Service, make use of the Crime Stopper Hotline by calling the number 800 8477. We remind the people of Bermuda that this is a community issue and we must see addressing what has happened not only a matter for the Police but all citizens to work to eliminate.
“We also ask for the Premier Michael Dunkley, as Minister of National Security, to give his undivided attention, usecurrent government resources and ensure the programmes in place are properly funded to attack the situation of Gang Violence and the underlying social issues that contribute to the situation we face. Government’s current posture of fiscal austerity must not be allowed to limit what can be done to address these issues.”
