Bermuda Football Team Defeat Grenada 2 – 0

March 8, 2015

[Updated with video] Following their 2-2 draw with Grenada on Friday evening, the Bermuda men’s football team defeated Grenada 2-0 at the National Sports Center this afternoon [Mar 8].

Bermuda took the lead early in the first half when a cross from Zeiko Lewis was headed in by Antwan Russell giving Bermuda the 1 – 0 lead.

Shannon Phillip picked up the first yellow card of the game in the 15th minute for a tackle on Russell, and two minutes later Harvey joined him in the referees book for a late tackle, and Bermuda went into the half-time break holding a 1-0 lead.

Bermuda made a change at the half, with Cecoy Robinson coming on for LeJuan Simmons, and six minutes into the half Bermuda made two more changes, bringing off Marco Warren and Russell, with Casey Castle and Rai Simons coming into the match. Lewis was taken out of the match in the 86th minute after being fouled, and he was replaced by Jahnaze Swan.

The two teams played out the second half with Bermuda maintaining the 1-0 lead, and in stoppage time Bermuda doubled the lead when Casey Castle tapped in from close range after Simons used his pace and blew pass his marker, earning a 2-0 victory.

Update: Audio comment from Coach Bascome after the match

Coach Bascome said, “I’m pleased with the result of course. I thought we stayed a lot more focused. We were conscious of the fact that we let in two goals [last game], so we have mindful of the diagonals that are coming in, so we closed the game out with two defensive midfielders.

“I was pleased with the movement and the interplay going down the middle, because we have been trying to spend some time doing penetration down the middle and it was pretty effective…”

Bermuda played a very impressive game. Possession and passing far better than Grenada.Bascome definitely has the respect of the players. Looking forward to Turks and Caicos.

Don’t mean to nitpick, but the qualifier is going to be against the Bahamas. Bermuda played T&C in rugby this weekend.

But point taken on how well the team played. Hopefully the Stadium will be packed for the WC qualifier.
