Photos: Bermuda Roller Derby Holds Bootcamp

May 7, 2015

Bermuda Roller Derby held their first official Derby bootcamp over the weekend, hosted by visiting coach, Deborah ‘Dirty Deborah Harry’ Monterrosa. The bootcamp was a highly anticipated event, with participation from current team members as well as those looking to join.

The Bootcamp was held on Saturday and Sunday, with two sessions each day. Coach Dirty Deborah, who was joined by a skate friend Jessica ‘MachinegunJubblies’ Espinoza, covered basic skating skills, rules of the game, strategy, and they even held their first scrimmages.

Monterrosa broke up the hard work with some fun drills such as some “pop-up” dance choreography, to help with remembering referee signals, and even some swing dancing to learn how to balance and work with a partner. Friday evening held an informal skate maintenance session and some work with skating on outdoor terrain.

The bootcamp saw over 25 attendees, with varied skill level and skill sets, plus lots of spectators and friends and family who came to support. Bermuda Roller Derby is growing everyday, and is always recruiting.

Anyone can join, especially Non-Skating Officials [those who do everything from score keeping to organizing refreshments], as well as players [women only] and referees, who can be men or women. If you wish to skate on the team, no skating background is required, you must just be a woman, 18 or older.

If you wish to contact them, you can reach them by email bermudarollerderby@gmail.com, their Facebook page, or by coming by a practice at Pembroke Community Club rink next to Admiralty House, Sundays 4-6pm or Tuesday 6-8pm.
