Police Confirm: Man Dies Following Stabbing

[Updated] Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines has confirmed that a man has died following being stabbed. Mr Caines confirmed that the man was stabbed in the Woodlawn Road area of Sandys, being transported to hospital before dying as a result of his injuries.

Details are limited at this time, however we will update as able.

Update 9.56am: Police confirm the victim was a 23-year-old Sandys man, and it is being “investigated as a murder.”

Update 10.11am: Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “Police responded to an incident that took place sometime between 10.00pm and 11.00pm on Tuesday, July 21.

“It appears that an altercation took place on Woodlawn Road, resulting in a 23-year-old man receiving a stab wound to the body. That man was taken to KEMH where he later died as a result of his injuries.

“Police are asking for anyone in the area – specifically in the Woodlawn Road area – if they saw an altercation between men, to contact police on 295-0011, or of course they can call the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline – that number is 800-8477.

“No further information about the victim will be released until the next of kin has been notified.”

Responding to questions, Mr Caines said, “At this point in time, there is no information to support the home invasion theory, however on scene we have officers from the forensic support unit and, of course, the serious crime unit, that are doing their due diligence.

“Tomorrow sometime we will have a press conference where officially we will put some more character around the untimely death of the 23-year-old Sandys man.

“We’re investigating it as a murder,” added Mr Caines.

Update 11.49am: A police spokesperson said, “Police responded to an incident that took place sometime between 10pm and 11pm on Tuesday July 21st. It is believed that and altercation took place on Woodlawn Road, resulting in a 23 year old Sandys Parish man receiving a stab wound to the body. The man was taken to KEMH where he later died from his injuries.

“Police are treating the death of the 23 year old man as suspicious and are asking members of the public, particularly in the Woodlawn Road area if they witnessed an altercation between men or have any other information which may be of assistance, to contact police on 295-0011 or contact the confidential Crime Stoppers Hotline on 1-800-8477.

“No further information about the victim will be released until Next of Kin have been notified. An official press conference will be held some time tomorrow [July 23].”

Update 3.05pm: Area MP Jamahl Simmons said, “I am deeply saddened and angered to learn of the stabbing incident in my constituency. My condolences to the family and friends of the victim. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

“I encourage the community to assist the Bermuda Police Service in bringing the perpetrator to justice.”

Update 7.21pm: Premier and Minister of National Security Michael Dunkley said, “Our first thoughts are with the family of the young man who has so tragically lost his life.

“At this early stage in the investigation I join with others in calling for witnesses or anyone with information to contact the Police or the confidential Crimestoppers hotline.

“We do not yet have the confirmed circumstances of this terrible crime and so our focus as a community must be on comforting his family in their loss and assisting the police in their investigation.”‎
