Second Hurricane Of 2015 Atlantic Season Forms
[Updated] Tropical Storm Fred — the sixth tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season has formed — and as of this morning [Aug 30] is about 315 miles off the Cape Verde Islands.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said, ” Fred is moving toward the northwest near 12 mph [19 km/h] and this general motion is expected to continue through Tuesday. On the forecast track, the center of Tropical Storm Fred is expected to move through the Cape Verde Islands by late Monday and into Tuesday.
“Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph [65 km/h] with higher gusts. Steady strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Fred could be near hurricane strength when it moves through the Cape Verde Islands.”
The Bermuda Weather Service said that Tropical Storm Fred is not a threat to Bermuda at this time.
Update: Fred has now strengthened into a hurricane – the second hurricane of the 2015 Atlantic season.
