Dale Butler Releases Bermuda Nicknames Book

December 13, 2016

An accomplished author of many books, Dale Butler has released a new title by the name of “The Book of Bermuda Nicknames,” available just in time for the holidays.

Besides being a former Parliamentarian and educator, Mr. Butler has penned many books on a variety of topics and is also well known for his fishcakes.

Speaking to Bernews on the release of his book, Mr. Butler said, “I’m pleased to be here to talk about my new book – The Book of Bermuda Nicknames. I started it 15 years ago, stopped it, got a lot support, but I knew I didn’t have them all, and I started it five years ago, and revived it about six months ago, asking Bermudians to send in as many nicknames as possible.”

“Today, I have released the Bermuda Book of Nicknames. If you wondered how that guy got the name One Beer, it was because whenever his friends saw him, he had one beer. You can find out in this book how people were named Six Eggs, Nine Eggs, Ice Water, Big Ice Water.

“All sorts of incredible and fun nicknames have been captured, sent into me by Bermudians, with a special poem by Arthur DeSilva entitled ‘Euchered’. It has gone over very, very well, and is available in all book stores of Bermuda. I’ve done it in an effort by capturing Weatherbird in the book, Hooks, Cooper, Dipper, Holdipp, Sandpaper Hollis, and many others.

“I did it because it adds to who we are as a people. We take a lot of pride in everything we do in this country, how we paint our houses, design our houses, but why did people name their friends and their children with nicknames? We’re one of the few countries that add the nicknames when people die.

“In fact, today, people tell me very often they don’t even know who a person is because all they ever knew was their nickname. That was the problem I had with the football book, when I had over a hundred nicknames and only one guy in the whole island knew the real names.

“He was able to give me those names, and so today, with the launch of The Book of Bermuda Nicknames, I’m delighted to say that I completed it. Those nicknames that I missed will obviously be added, and this adds to our literary works in Bermuda.”

  3. Triangle Drifter says:

Ha, should be a good one. During my tourism days I used to tell visitors that if they found themselves bored in the hotel room pick up the phonebook & go through the nicknames.

So many have them. Some very well known. Some not so well known. All with a story behind them.

  4. Mark Orchard says:

Without nicknames we wouldn’t know who half the people in the obituaries were!

  5. Positive Pessimist says:

I swear all my husband’s childhood friends have food for nicknames, and I get them all mixed up. I’ll be out and say “Isn’t that your friend, Meatball?” and he’ll go “No, that’s Pork Chops”-not to get confused with his friend ‘Ham Bone’, a totally different guy. They must have done a lot of eating growing up!

  6. Dee Dee says:

Is “Jim Garlic” in there? Also “Snatcher” who use to holler out all the mothers’ names while walking through our neighborhood to work.
