Police: No Homicides Were Recorded In 2019

January 23, 2020

Commissioner of Police Stephen Corbishley today advised that “2019 was the first time in over 20 years that no homicides were recorded in Bermuda, with the belief that this position could actually be even longer subject to examination of archive crime records.”

Commissioner Corbishley stated: “2019 saw tremendous work by the BPS and the Government’s Anti-Gang Task Force in preventing the risk of serious violence, particularly in regards to gun crime, across the island.

“Last year not one life was lost through homicide which is testament to those involved in protecting the public and dealing with small parts of our community who choose to be involved in gang related crime.

“Additionally, we recorded just 2 firearms related injuries and whilst this is still extremely serious, it pales against the recording of 28 firearms related injuries 10 years ago.

“However, tackling this problem is complex and involves significant resources to intervene in tensions and ensure we prevent the supply and use of guns and other weapons.

“Additionally, we see increasing numbers of young men want to turn away from crime and there is excellent support from Pastor Bean and others to assist them.

“But last year’s position cannot leave to complacency and whilst it is an excellent achievement, the same, if not more effort, needs to continue in order to prevent the senseless loss of any life and instead create pathways for young men involved in gangs, drug dealing and other forms of crime to redirect their lives.

“The key for this is to continue a strong partnership between Government, Police and local communities.”

Minister of National Security Wayne Caines stated: “The ongoing work of the Gang Violence Reduction Team is starting to resonate and bear fruit in our community.

“We must not rest on our laurels and continue to educate our young people, provide programs for our at risk population as well as programs for our incarcerated population.

“The invaluable efforts of the Bermuda Police Service bolstering these initiatives through working to make Bermuda safer is noteworthy and of course has been a primary factor in reducing crime on our island and they should be lauded.

“We will continue to work together and with our community partners, remain committed to eliminating gang and gun related violence in Bermuda.

“We are also extremely thankful for the assistance we receive from members of the community as their input is paramount in our ongoing efforts to combat crime in all its forms.”

It is always great news when there hasn’t been any deaths. However there have been plenty of gun incidents and I don’t think Bps can take credit because these guys can’t shoot straight! That is the only reason there hasn’t been anyone killed.

This has to be the best news of 2019/20! Stand up Bermuda and be proud of this! Considering the struggles countries in the region and around the world are having with homicides, this news should be yelled from the top of mountains!

Meh not thing to jump for joy about just because there were no deaths dont mean there were no attempt. no murders should be the norm in a small place like Bermuda. we need to keep chasing after to find and fix the root cause of the violence on the island.
