April 20, 2010

The Bermuda Diabetes Association and Dr. Joseph Froncionni were recognized for their work as Health Champions in the Community at the Annual Public Health Awards ceremony last week.

The Bermuda Diabetes Association earned the Public Health Recognition Award. Chief Nursing Officer, Ms. Gaylia Landry cited the remarkable contribution the organization has made in Bermuda since it was formed in 1979 as a result of the high incidences of diabetes in Bermuda saying:

The mission of this organization is to lead the Bermuda community to reduce the prevalence of this chronic disease and to improve the lives of those affected. The Bermuda Diabetes Association encourages healthy lifestyle choices and promotes initiatives that are enabling cultural shifts and empowering individuals to change.

The Public Health Professional Award went to Dr. Joseph Froncionni. Ms Landry noted that Dr. Froncionni has dedicated countless hours in a personal crusade to educate young Bermudians about road safety saying:

Dr. Froncionni’s contribution in studying the incidence of road traffic collisions and his tireless campaigning to communicate findings and lobbying for policy changes has not only been admirable, but also impactful.
