Cyclist Hits Walker: Arrested For Drunk Driving

May 12, 2010

Last night [May 11] at around 10pm in Hamilton, a pedestrian was struck by a motorcycle by walking across a pedestrian crossing, with the motorcycle rider subsequently arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.

The pedestrian, a 47 year old Pembroke man, sustained a broken right foot and facial injuries in the accident. The motorcycle rider, a 39 year old Pembroke man, sustained head and facial injuries and bruising.

The accident occurred on the junction of Reid Street and King Street, and the motorcycle went on to collide with a nearby parked motorcycle.

The Police say that a car stopped to allow the pedestrian to cross the road on the pedestrian crossing. As the man was walking across, a motorcycle traveling up Spurling Hill collided with him.

As a result, the pedestrian was thrown on to the sidewalk and the motorcycle collided with a nearby parked motorcycle.

Both injured parties were taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment of their injuries.

Reports of pedestrians being struck by motor vehicles are not unusual, with two fatalities this year. 41 yr old Andre Hendrickson was fatally struck by a car and on April 17. Three months after the initial accident in which he was struck by a motorbike while walking, 69 year old Derek Smith died on April 24.

In two cases this year involving children who thankfully weren’t seriously hurt, a 10 yr old boy was struck by a motorbike while walking across a pedestrian crossing on March 19, and a 12 yr old boy was hit by a car on April 27.

Only last week, a 59 yr old woman was struck by a taxi while walking in Hamilton.

Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to contact PC Bernadette Lawrence on 295-0011.
