May 24th Marathon: 10 Things You May Not Know

  • 1909: The first year the race was ran, with 25 entrants
  • 1916: John Simon was the first Bermudian winner
  • 1964: Winner Neville Virgil was followed closely by his twin brother Neil who placed 2nd
  • 1976: The first woman to officially enter was 16 year old Merenette Bean who won
  • 1976: In a brother/sister victory, Merenette Bean and Cal Bean won their divisions of the race in the same year
  • 2008: Winner Chris Estwanik set a new record of 1:08.25, finishing over 4 mins ahead of the second placer
  • 2008: Ashley Estwanik won the women’s division making the Estwaniks the first husband wife team to win the May 24th in the same year. They repeated this in 2010.
  • 2009: Second placer was Olympic triathlete Tyler Butterfield, whose mother Debbie Butterfield [along with Sandra Mewett] holds the record of 7 wins in the female division of the May 24th half marathon
  • 1921 – 1983: The years that Sir Stanley Burgess competed in the race. Sir Stanley, a multiple time winner, ran the race well into his 80s
  • 1909 – 2009: The record holder for all time male winners is disputed in some circles due to difficulties of confirming wins from decades ago. Some say Sir Stanley Burgess holds the record with 10 or 11 wins, some say Kavin Smith holds it with his 9 wins.
