Health Accounts Report: Income & Expenses
The Bermuda Health Council (BHeC) released the National Health Accounts Report 2010, which offers a comprehensive review of the growth in Bermuda’s health system financing and expenditure from 2004 to 2009. The report combines publicly-available data from the Bermuda Government and the Bermuda Hospitals Board, with previously unpublished private sector data sourced from health insurance claims and charitable non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
The report identifies as the sources of financing for the health system; the Ministry of Health’s consolidated fund spending allocation; all health insurers; out of pocket payments and charitable NGOs, as well as where those funds are spent.
The total health system finance and expenditure for fiscal 2009 was $557.7 million, which is 9.2% of Bermuda’s
2008 GDP and an expenditure ratio of $8,661 per capita, given Bermuda’s estimated 2009 population of 64,395. Total public sector health finance for fiscal 2009 was $155.7 million, private was $401.9 million.
