BTC Releases Statement On Work Stoppage

August 6, 2010

BTC has released a statement in reference to the work stoppage this morning, the full statement from Mr. Edgar Dill, Acting CEO, The Bermuda Telephone Company Ltd. follows below:

At approximately 8am today The Bermuda Telephone Company Limited (BTC) experienced an illegal work stoppage by the Bermuda Industrial Union members and latterly by the Bermuda Public Services Association. The issue at hand was whether or not BTC had the right to cease payment of a discretionary bonus.

Following discussions with our union partners an agreement was reached in which BTC agreed to pay a reduced portion of the bonuses in favour of our commitment to service our customers and the community at large. Never the less BTC retains the right to categorize bonuses as a discretionary management option. BTC would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding as BTC returns to normal service.

I had to throw up a little bit on reading this before regaining my sense of humor. I heard earlier that BTC workers had “downed tools” to protest something… I knew not what. I joked that to down them, they needed to pick them up in the first place. Please will someone, anyone, provide the BIU with a damn dictionary… look up the word discretionary and relate it to your members. The entitled BTC workers should be grateful they have not (yet) been made redundant in this economy like many of their neighbours. Do they know how many others have had hours reduced just so that they could keep their jobs and benefits and these jobworths are illegally striking over BONUSES…. yes, I feel sick again.
