BDOT Responds To Negative Online Review

April 20, 2011

Today [Apr.20] the Bermuda Department of Tourism [BDOT] responded to the unfavorable review by a visitor which has been circulating online.

The review, which was posted on popular travel website Tripadvisor in 2009, says there is “constant gang warfare & killing,” and that “Bermuda people are not nice.”

The review continues on to say that “Bermuda is a nasty rotten stink hole,” with the author claiming she got “sick from the swamp water they drink” and recommending other visitors not use our water to brush their teeth, and instead use bottled water.

The statement from the Ministry follows below:

As with all popular destinations, there are times when visitors will express unfavorable opinions – and this is unfortunate. However it is important to note that the website posting which is circulating is more than 15 months old. Since that time, Bermuda has received extensive positive coverage both locally and overseas in numerous media outlets.”

“It should also be noted that only recently passengers on the Queen Victoria cruise ship who visited the Island on April 2, rated Bermuda as their top destination. Passengers ranked Bermuda as the top scoring port of call with a score of 91.3 percent. The nearest rival achieved 88.2 percent. Finally, residents can be assured that the BDOT will continue to tout Bermuda as not only one of the friendliest places, but also one of the safest visitor destinations in the region.

The unfavourable review follows in full below:

I strongly do not recommend going to Bermuda.

There are constant gang warfare & killing. The govt. is considering curfews to curb the out of control violence. Someone followed me at night near my hotel. Very upsetting.

Bermuda people are not nice & have attitude. Cost is about 3 times that of Canada & the USA. Service is horrible and the quality of everything is extremely low. I noticed garbage on the beaches also. I went to Bermuda because my husband’s company is planning on moving their headquarters out of Bermuda. I can see why.

I was so glad when our airplane left Bermuda. I am glad we did not get hurt during our trip.

Bermuda is a nasty rotten stink hole (our expensive hotel room smelled musty & like body odor. I got sick from the swamp water they drink. Brush your teeth with bottled water like in Mexico.)

i don’t understand why the media is giving this one bad review so much attention.

    • bernews says:

We generally run all BDOT statements, so ran this one like any other. Its our first mention of the review…

      • Sarah says:

i know it’s yours; you perform responsible journalism, but it was on one of the news stations early this morning before the bdot said anything, which i find strange.

        • Mad Prophet says:

HOW CAN A FOREIGN MANAGING DIRECTOR PHYSICALLY ASSAULT A COLLEAGUE, BY GRABBING HIM IN ANGER REMAIN IN BERMUDA???

HOW CAN A RESTAURANT MANAGER THROW ICE AT A SHOP STEWARD IN A FIT OF ANGER AND REMAIN IN BERMUDA???

CAN AN MANAGER WHO CIRCULATE EMAILS VIA COMPANY COMPUTERS, OF SANTA CLAUS HAVING HOMOSEXUAL RELATIONS WITH A FATHER, AFTER SANTA DELIVERED CHRISTMAS PRESENTS TO THE MAN’S CHILDREN REMAIN IN BERMUDA???

THEY ARE ALL STILL IN BERMUDA FOLKS. TALK ABOUT “GANG VIOLENCE” AND TOURISM!?

I WITNESSED A SHOP-STEWARD ALONG WITH THE HEALTH INSPECTOR STOMPING OUT ROACHES IN THE MAIN KITCHEN, JULY OF 2009.

I WORKED IN A FILTHY KITCHEN, INFESTED WITH RATS ROACHES MICE AND AT 1 POINT SPARROWS FLEW THROUGH THE AIR DROPPING BOMBS. THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE ANYWHERE IN THE CIVILIZED WORLD.

I SAW CHEFS PREPARING FOOD WHILE COCKROACHES DINE ON THE CRUMBS BESIDE THE CUTTING BOARD.

PEOPLE WONDER WHY BERMUDIANS DON’T WANT TO WORK IN THE HOTEL INDUSTRY.

posted on Tripadvisor in 2009. A response from BDOT in 2011. Not sure which I feel more embarrassed by

    • My two cents says:

That’s EXACTLY what I was thinking. I know this island is behind the times, but damn, this takes it to another level.

      • ._./ says:

I think most people were generally unaware of the review until it was posted on an article (on Bernews) regarding the recent shooting/murders.

        • jason says:

This is a MEDIA response..because it was posted on bernews today…

    • Samuel Wainwright says:

You must consider why it took so long for the ministry to respond to this obviously ridiculous post. The Minister of tourism at that time was also the premier of Bermuda….Ewart Brown. One bad posting does not always get noticed but what is sad is that everyone is making such big fuss about it thus giving her more exposure. If the Ministers of tourism responded to every post involving Bermuda then they would never be able to do their job (which is promoting Bermuda).

I think that this person was just trying to get attention which they did.
They did not have to call Bermuda a rotten stink hole. We don’t insult their country. And as for the water it is rated some of the best in the world. If she got sick from it it is because her body is not used to quality.

  3. boston baked bean says:

Can someone explain to me why this is news today? This is a review from 2009 – c’mon guys, get with the program!

  4. Not Suprised says:

She’s right on the attitude part. Sorry but I agree with her on that one. The rest well i guess we can’t knock her as it’s a visitor’s prespective. Everyone has their own opinion. I agree with DJ. a two year late response?? should have just ignored it. Or contacted the lady directly back then.

  5. Islander says:

Swamp water? as opposed to the sh*t they drink out there…please, and the only one who sounds like they have tude is her…sounds fishy if you ask me….

  6. shawn d says:

except 4 the water part i tend 2 agree

  7. Just Joking says:

I would like to inform anyone who reads this review to exercise their own scrutiny as this perception may not accurate for the most part.

  8. Jujusimpson says:

Every review no matter how long ago it was posted, deserves a response. Obviously the complainant has never traveled outside of her neighbourhood. While we are dismayed and regretful of the crime in Bermuda, it is a problem every country on this planet has had to deal with and Bermuda is certainly not the worse – think Eygpt/India etc. I own guests quarters and my guests love the island it’s people and it’s water and show that they do by coming back year after year. Despite putting our best foot forward, there are times when no matter what you do, and we do try to please all our guests, you can’t please everyone especially if they are looking to find fault. I sincerely hope that God will give the complianant wisdom and knowledge and most certainly a kinder and gentler heart. Feel the Love!

  9. Old Broad says:

All I can say is “good riddance” to the lady who posted the scathing review of Bermuda. She obviously has a bee in her bonnet and would likely find fault no matter where she went. I suspect any “attitude” she received was in direct proportion to the nasty vibes she was sending out. In Bermuda, more than most places, you get back what you give. Too bad she was such a sore-head…she likely missed many opportunities to experience the most open and friendly people on the planet.

    • Islander says:

I agree I mean most people when they give a review on anything, find at least one thing positive, this woman was determined to bring our island down, that’s why I say it sounds fishy….like not a visitor at all maybe an expat who had a bad experience here, and lets not forget shes from Canada they have not been our biggest fans since Rebeca Middleton.

      • bernews says:

We had that situation here a while back…..the story about the foreign drug courier getting caught/going to prison here. The person’s friends came and hammered the entire island and people in general, and specifically about Middleton case:
        http://bernews.com/2011/01/drugs-courier-sentenced-to-three-years/

      • Old Broad says:

Well, being a Canadian expat who worked in Bermuda for 15 years and who is now back in Canada, Rebecca Middleton’s horrible murder and the unbelievably botched investigation and inept treatment by the justice system, has created a certain amount of trepidation in some Canadians about visiting Bermuda. Having said that, however, nearly everyone I’ve spoken to since returning to Canada would visit Bermuda in a heartbeat and are green with envy over my having had the opportunity to live there for such a long period of time. Some people, and perhaps this lady is one, have problems adjusting to cultures different from their own and find island living very hard to take. I don’t think anyone should take her rantings too seriously and should instead investigate Bermuda for themselves, leave any preconceptions at home and make an effort to spread the loooove!! :-)

        • Skeptical says:

We just had extended family visit from Canada and they absolutely loved it here and didn’t want to leave. They were planning their return trip while here!!

    • rolleyes says:

` the most open and friendly people on the planet. `

  10. Terry says:

Just another Bermudian who lives overseas. Rubbing it in because they think their life is better “Oberdear”.

    Now back to regular programing………………..

  11. Mike says:

Someone posted that link on a Bernews article.(can’t recall which one) someone saw it and ran with.

The Trip advisor commentor sounds bitter about something. I wouldn’t be surprise if her husband was getting a little something on the side when he was here.

  12. 1 BDA says:

For that lady to be worrying about the gang violence on the island, she must have been hanging with the wrong crowd. Correct me if i’m wrong but the government was opting for curfew around the trouble spots? How she know somebody was following her to her hotel, somebody might have been going to the same hotel as she was. Sounds like she was paro(paranoid). Yes the prices are high, but did she ever ask why? im sure some polite Bermudian would have told her. She must have had a dirty nasty attitude if she thinks Bermudians are rude. Cause i for a fact the conversation doesn’t continue until we hear a good morning, good afternoon or good night. If you cant except the way of life before you came well don’t come at all.

  13. Cherie says:

I also wonder why BDOT is responding at this time to a review from 2 years ago. Very poor form.

I am a Bermudian that has been living “oberdear” for the past 28 years. I resent the attitude from on island Bermudians that we act like we think we have it better. I love Bermuda. Always have, always will, but it is not pleasant for Bermudians that have lived “away” to come back, excited to be “home” and get resentment from those that have never left. Had to get that off my chest.

I think the lady that did this review had a very unusual, bad experience, that possibly had more to do with her husband than Bermuda itself. The comment about the water, pure, clean, rainwater, was just plain childish. After more than 20 years out of BDA, I was so excited to drink a glass of the most pure water I’ve ever had. It did not disappoint. Bermudians CAN be seen as very rude, especially at the insistance of the mandatory “good morning, etc.”. Yes, it is good manners, but tourists don’t know our “rules” and should be shown gently by showing good manners first, rather than countering bad manners with even more bad manners. Bermudians need to understand that there is a LOT of competition from other islands that are much much cheaper. We need to step up our game and treat every guest with courtesy, kindness and island hospitality, regardless of their behavior. I’m quite aware of the “ugly American” and the behaviour some exibit abroad. Surely the mannerly Bermudian can rise above that and show them how it’s done. :)

    • Terry says:

      Cherie, pot calling kettle black.

    • Mr T says:

” mandatory good morning ” I agree this is nice to say but not all bermudians can say it and if it is not said to them the other person gets the mandatory teeth sucking! You can walk in a shop and the server will speak only to Bermudians not the tourists, I’ve seen it. When will Bermuda wake up and realize that they need tourists and that the idiots playing with guns are ruining this beautiful island.

  14. Triangle Drifter says:

As usual, most attack the messenger rather than deal with the message. The age of the complaint matters little. Nothing has chamged since 2009. The Bermuda ‘attitude’ towards sevice is as bad as ever. Crime is worse. Maybe the water did stink. Processed water in one of the few remaining hotels is nothing like fresh out of the tank. The last time I was in a Bermuda hotel room it looked very dated. I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express which was more luxurious than the Bermuda hotel. As usual the BDOT is way behind in dealing with a response. Rather than listening to the idiots on local talk shows the BDOT should make it a daily job for somebody to keep an eye on high profile travel sites like Trip Advisor.

Be thankful that this woman did speak out. Most speak with their credit cards & go somewhere else next time.

  15. Cordell W. Riley says:

There is a company, whose name escapes me just now, that can be hired by travel oranisations who scan travel sites daily for this kind of information and then send it to their clients who prepare an appropriate and custom response. The major travel players use it so that they can provide prompt responses to all negative comments.

  16. duh says:

well some of it is true and we need get our necks from our ‘pink sand’ and start getting this non-proforming and very XPENSIV govt to bring concrete results to remedy this fauxpas of things.Get real ppl there are severe problems that left uncheck for the last 5yrs.

  17. Truth is killin' me... says:

Sounds like this woman posted was mad that she didn’t get an “ease” while she was here!

  18. just fishin' says:

I wonder about the honesty of this posting on Trip Advisor.
    1. Someone’s marketing dept (any hotel, Govt., airline etc etc) should have picked this up back at the time it was posted and responded. Google, I think it is, does have a free service which emails you daily a report listing each time your selected key word has appeared on the internet in the previous 24 hours. (The name of a hotel, your company, or your Island)
    2. Trip Advisor does allow for the reporting of suspect postings and will investigate…it’s too late now of course.
    3. Has anyone checked this person’s other postings on Trip Advisor? Easy to do as well. See what she says about other locations.
    4. To me she spoiled her contribution and made me doubt her honesty by writing as she did about the water, but we should all be aware of how easy it is for a worldwide audience to read negative comments. We can’t merely cast them aside with a “Good riddance”. Too late.
    5. And if you know someone who has visited the Island and enjoyed their hotel/stay ask them to write a review on Trip Advisor.

  19. Citizen Banned says:

It seems almost unbelievable that she could have had such a completely horrible experience here. One or two of the list of things would seem more believable. She obviously likes to complain and thats all.

However, perhaps this should be a wake up call to all of us to man up and accept the criticism – to do something about it.

    • She is probably one those ‘career’ complainers! I have worked for a hotel where the GM was notorious for ‘giving’away the hotel….:I am so sorry! Please come back – 2 nights free!’

  20. Watching! says:

The only person I feel sorry for is her husband!

  21. Lisa says:

I am sorry but I agree with this tourist. And though it was posted in 2009, it seems that Bermuda has only gotten worse since then from all the violence on the island.
I understand the issues of the cost of island living, Hawaii is not much different as things are expensive to import, etc etc. However, the people I met in Bermuda as a Tourist, were very rude. The attitude problem is very true. The airport was horrible. Mean mugs, rudeness, no smiles, drug sniffing dogs and customs agents who would be better off having their jobs under the island rather than in a public building. I went to several restaurants(which I won’t name here),At one, I got a glass of water and it had LARGE particles of “stuff” floating in it. I asked for another glass of water. The next glass of water had two LONG black hairs in it. I set my glass aside because I didn’t want to seem like one of “those” customers. My meal had hairs in it as well. It was AWFUL. I’ll only say that it was in St. Georges.
For the prices we paid, I don’t think it is too much for tourists to ask for good “normal” service, food that is well and properly cooked, and perhaps a smile or two would not be asking for too much. If a person cannot smile, then they should not be in service at all.Fake it till you make it. I am not saying that all tourists are the great. Often they come with their attitudes of entitlement and leave places worse than where they found them. Which is an indictment against them. But I am sorry to say that Bermuda was not a good time for me and my family and at times was very, very creepy feeling on the island. And if you are not a party person, after 6 pm there is not much for a tourist to do so I would say it is not family friendly either.
The beaches were beautiful and it was amazing to be in the middle of the ocean but there is nothing worse than being in such a small place, surrounded by water, feeling closed in AND abused. I hope Bermuda makes some changes because it is a shame that such a beautiful piece of earth becomes a byword and a thing of ridicule around the world. I am rooting for Bermuda. Good luck.

    • Gertie says:

I can almost promise you that any restaurant you went it, was NOT serviced by a Bermudian. Take a good look around. There aren’t many Bermudians anywhere in the service industry. So those points are invalid to Bermuda. They are bringing in foreign workers with no service skills and very little English proficiency. So the restaurants will never give you a true Bermudian experience, until the times change.

      • Ricci says:

And where are all these “hardworking” Bermudians?

  22. Eye Opener says:

    Hi,

There are some lessons to be learned from all negative reviews, now is the time to learn what to change, Bermuda needs help in regards to Tourism, the numbers speak for themselves. Bermuda needs to create added value in order to justify these higher prices for hotels, food, and taxis. The times of luxury tourism is not now, Dept of Tourism may have to change with the times whether they like it or not in order to stay competitive.

I am sure the appropriate officials will listen and make the changes they see fit to get Bermuda Tourism back to where it was. It is possible because Bermuda is a wonderful destination but needs to lower costs, invest in some service training and incentives, and market more to Europeans/Brits and Japan/China. Bermuda need not to forget their beaches, some of the nicest in the world, don’t forget this when marketing!!!! Diving/watersports…Bermuda Triangle. Another key…get marketing Bermuda….airports, internet, travel agencies, travel conventions, publicity from travel writers….anything….where is all the advertising for 2011/2012 season?

I was at Horseshoe today and heard alot of rumblings about two things from Tourist today: 1) To bad no car rentals, 2) so expensive for chairs at the beach, food and drink.

  23. That's a fact says:

Thanks Lisa that was positive critisim that will help us. The tone of your writing was professional and deserving of conideration.

  24. Eye Opener says:

One more thing, am I the only one embarrased about the delay in a response, almost two years to respond?

  25. Bermudian Hospitality Worker says:

Bermuda should look at criticism as a gift. A chance to put things right. Face it, our tourism product SUCKS big time. We have beaches and thats it. You cannot rent a car, there is no casino, no topless beaches, no night life. Say what you want about this but its true. Good and services are too expensive and many Bermudians are rude – they seem to think they are ‘Spashul’. They aren’t.

Bermuda should seriously think about whether they want to be in the tourist business. Other places do it so much better. All you have to do is show up and be nice. Many Bermudians cannot do this.

This is honest criticism – and I work in the hospitality industry OK.

Sorry if you don’t like it.

  26. Mad Prophet says:

THE PROPHET SAYS THE WATER WAS BAD AT A CERTAIN HOTEL.

WHEN YOU TURNED ON THE TAP THE WATER CAME OUT BROWN, NOT LIGHT BROWN RUST BROWN.

NOW IMAGINE YOU ARE PAYING 500.00$$$$$+ PER NIGHT FOR A ROOM. YOU GO TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH OR WASH YOUR FANNY IN THE MORNING, STILL HALF ASLEEP YOU CATCH SOME WATER IN THE SINK.

    YEA NOW YOU FEELING IT.

BERMUDA IS LUCKY THIS PERSON DIDN’T SEE THE KITCHEN….I DID.

I GOT MAD AS HELL WHEN THEY TOOK AWAY OUR WATER COOLERS AND TOLD US TO DRINK FROM THE TAPS.

“YES” RUST COLORED WATER CAME OUT OF EVERY TAP IN THE KITCHEN INCLUDING THE ONES WE USED TO MAKE THE SOUP, MAKE TEA/COFFEE, COOK THE RICE ETC, ETC.

ASK CHRIS FERBURT, HE KNOWS. I WAS SO OUTSPOKEN ABOUT IT I WAS BROUGHT BEFORE THE MANAGING DIRECTOR…WITHOUT REPRESENTATION THOUGH I WAS A UNION MEMBER.

THIS COMPANY INSTALLED EXPENSIVE WATER TREATMENT MACHINES IN SOME OF THE OUTLETS AND STARTED CHARGING GUEST FOR WATER.

    YES FOLKS IT IS TRUTH.

I DON’T HAVE TIME RIGHT NOW BUT TUNE BACK IN TOMORROW.

FOR MORE NEWS FROM THE “MAD PROPHET”.

  27. Honestly says:

BASICALLY, ANYONE WHO READS THE NEGATIVE LETTER WILL KNOW DIFFERENT…JUST ASK SOMEONE!

THIS IS NOT A NORM TO GET LETTERS LIKE THIS. SO IF SHE WASN’T HAPPY IN HER OWN BODY OR LIFE…THAT IS FINE…WE NEED TO MOVE PAST THIS!!!!!

  28. All right says:

I agree with her completly… You do not get good first impressions off this island… Water is bad/different tasting aslo….

  29. Truth says:

Bermuda, what is Bermuda who are Bermudian’s not a dam thing! you lost your land
you lost who you where. come to Bermuda as a tourist are you joking crime, bad service not a dam thing to do!. I hear Bermudian’s are lazy as hell and dum and
thats why we Canandian are here and will make Bermuda a better place!

Sorry if you don’t like this but its the truth!!!!!!

    • mavis says:

      Go back to Canada and spout tha SS nazi theology in your own country;

  30. Bermudian Hospitality Worker says:

It used to be that people would come here by the thousand – our hotels were always booked solid. I remember the time well. We became complacent – we didn’t stay competitive. Now we are a has been destination. We are too picky and difficult to deal with.

As I said in my previous message – you can’t even rent a car here. Its quite embarrassing. Before you mention our amount of traffic – I KNOW – but thats no excuse. You can rent a car in Cayman. You can rent a car in the Island of Guernsey – and their traffic is much worse than ours.

Not renting cars in Bermuda means we are not competing with other destinations. Sorry but that’s the way it is. This is just one of the ways we don’t compete – but there are many others – some written in my previous message. Bermuda really has to decide if they want tourists to come here – then act accordingly.

  31. Makes sense! says:

    All u need is love”

  32. Makes sense! says:

Maybe we are all in denial, lets face it bermuda is boring thats why we all get on that plane and and head of to casinos ,shopping, carabanas, new orleans etc whatever or mode of excitement your into, plus as bermudians we all demand top service …expect top service everywhere but when we get home we dont return the favour.. But dont talk about my people as we are all in denial……bermuda is another world we are selling old hat for top dollar. I would not head out now around the island at night to bars clubs etc so why should we expect or visitors to? Too many crazies out there now. Plus we are all locking up tight now you could get robbed while ur out I know I have in the last 6 months.not fun …dont get me started.

  33. Bermudian Hospitality Worker says:

Makes sense – yes I think we are all still in denial. Bermuda hasn’t had it bad enough yet to get off its collective a$$ and do something. We haven’t reached rock bottom yet. But make no mistake, tourism is dead – we have no product. We are boring and uncompetitive.

  34. Shadashay says:

A brutally honest opinion at trip advisor. Bermuda is nothing more then a rich indian reserve, where all the natives expect something for nothing. I’ve lived in a lot of places but never in one with such an arrogance of entitlement. The best thing that could happen to this place is if International business picked up and left and Bermudians actually had to roll up their sleves and work for a living rather then complain. Of course I’m not talking about all Bermudians, just 90% of them. Where else do they celebrate being Big and Beautiful or national single mother’s day.

  35. 16v says:

The whole review just seems fishy. I’ve seen others like it on Trip Advisor, from people, who have but 1 or 2 posts – ever. The post their rants and then “disappear”

  36. Paulette says:

I’m sorry, I do not disagree with the author.

I have travelled all over the world and Bermuda is where I encounter the angriest, meanest people. They are nice to each other as Bermudians, but the buck stops there. Tourists are treated as an incovenience and expats as their headaches. It’s time Y’all need to check yourselves in the mirror.

I do not recommend my friends and family to come visit me here and waste their money. Those that did said it was like being in the 80′s, and every day came home with stories about terrible service and bad conditions of things, and everything too expensive to buy. They went broke the first day at the grocery store.

They thought the wheels on their scooters were coming off as they rode. I had to explain the poor conditions of the roads. They asked..”isn’t this a rich country?” They did not drink the water because I do not drink the water. I had to explain why we did not have sidewalks..I didn’t have an explanation since SUV take up what use to be walking space…

Needless to say, they still return to Cuba, DR , St Lucia, St Kitts, Tobago, Antigua and Mexico every year., bahamas, barbados, costa rica, turks & caicos, and cayman every year….not Bermuda…think about it…

  37. Paulette says:

Gertie, you are right..people in service from other countries might not give you the greatest service…..but at least you GET service…

I was at a hotel restaurant sitting at the bar waiting for my reservation…the Bermudian bartender lady chose to do a series of other tasks (as she saw us sit down at the bar) for about 10 minutes while we were the only customer at the bar….when she looked around and realized nothing else to do, she hummed and asked if we wanted a drink. I asked “is this the bar?” We decided to stick with wine and beer because she could not be bothered to make a mixed drink. A nice Filipino host/server helped her and us find some seating outside like he did not want us to wake the lion….all in the day of an expat pussyfooting around the Bermudian not to irritate them. She probably complained later to her boss that he went over her because he’d done a good job…

  38. Davie Kerr says:

With great regret, I have to agree that the standards of service and cleanliness have fallen away badly over the years. I had the good fortune to live and work in Bermuda for nearly 40 years and have been back several times since I left in 2005, and the decline is noticeable. I would trace it back to the 1980s when in my opinion (and that of many others) Bermuda started to price itself out of the market, and then tried to redress the balance by bringing in (and I do not intend this in the derogatory sense) “cheap labour” from various Asian countries instead of trying to regain its former high standards.
As far as crime etc goes, when I first came to Bermuda in 1966 there was an average of about one murder a year: now it seems that there’s nearly one a week, which is far too many for a resident population of around 66,000, which is about the size of any N American small town. Where has this weapons culture come from? Why can’t people just agree to differ, instead of taking it as a mortal insult if somone else’s opinion differs from yours? Just because I may support North Village and you may happen to support Dandy Town, that doesn’t automatically make you a bad person! I really think that the excessively casual Bermudian attitude towards sex and reproduction has a lot to answer for here, with far, far too many youngsters growing up without having an appropriate male role model to follow. Mind you, this is not a new phenomenon: my first wife worked in a big hotel 35 years ago, and came home one day somewhat shocked that she’d just met a woman who worked at the same hotel who openly bragged about having 13 children — from 12 different men!

  39. Joe says:

Well, if we had such a great product more people would be here and developers would want to build new hotels, right? But they aren’t and they don’t. Full stop. And there is the real answer to her complaints.
Yadda yadda yadda all you like about us, them or the guy over there, but the long and short of it is Yes, we have a big problem.

  40. Citizen Banned says:

Bermudians have nobody but themselves to blame. It used to be you’d go in a restaurant or hotel and you were proudly served by cheerful helpful Bermudians. Now you are served by cheerful helpful foreigners and if you are unfortunate enough to get the Bermudian member of staff – you get bad service and attitude.

I was in a Hamilton bar 2 nights ago with a friend and we could not get the bartender’s attention no matter what we did. He was yapping away to a friend for several minutes. Eventually my friend complained and the bartender took a huge attitude. It was as if it was our fault. It was truly amazing to see this attitude of self importance and entitlement. Alas it happens everywhere in Bermuda.

Bermudians are also above pot washing jobs. The sense of entitlement here has become too much. As a Bermudian, I am glad I had the opportunity to work overseas many years ago – because it made me see how the rest of the world is.

I agree with the post above say ing that perhaps IB should leave Bermuda high and dry – cos only then would Bermudians roll up their sleeves and get some work done.

I am not saying that ALL Bermudians are lazy so don’t even go there. What I am say is that enough of them are to give that overall impression.

I’ve heard Bermuda described as ‘the spoiled child of the Atlantic’. I think it is a perfect description.

I’ll leave you with this: Perception is reality. If people think Bermudians are all lazy and inefficient – then nothing else matters – they are.

That woman most live in a rat hole where evr shes from! But people llets weak up, bad news travels very quick!!

  42. Shocked says:

After reading this article yesterday I was completely shocked today when I came across a website [URL removed] and read the postings on their rant section. I am not from Bermuda but still shocked that so many followers are on here daily talking negitively about Bermuda and it’s people, this site devalues Bermuda way more than any Trip Advisor posting!
