Bail Denied: Robbery With Imitation Gun

May 6, 2011

During this morning’s [May 6] Magistrates Court session, the Prosecutor said that Police had recovered an imitation firearm that was alleged to have been used in a crime spree by two St George’s males who were both back before the Court this morning as their lawyers put in an application for their bail.

18-year-old Kamrone Whiting, represented by lawyer Elizabeth Christopher, and 19-year-old Jaron Roberts, represented by lawyer Charles Richardson, were seeking to be released from custody and allowed out on bail.

After both lawyers had made representations on behalf of their clients, including the fact that they had their parents present in Court, the Prosecutor re-counted the main grounds of the Crown’s objections.

This saw the Prosecutor reiterate that the pair had been charged with thirteen offences relating to robbery and the use of a firearm. The Prosecutor said that Police had recovered the firearm and had found it to be a black plastic imitation of a UZI submachine gun.

Despite Ms Christopher’s observations that the weapon alleged to have been used was an imitation of a weapon and that this should be taken into account, Magistrate Archie Warner reminded that whether the firearm was imitation or real was not a major legal issue. Having heard from all three lawyers, the Magistrate ordered that the two men should remain in custody, where they have been since 21st March.

After last month’s armed robbery spree, the Police released the following statement:

Between 10:30pm and 11:45pm on Monday, March 14th 2011 Police received several reports of robberies and attempted robberies having taken place in the Devonshire, Pembroke and Warwick areas.

The victims of these offences were motorcycle riders and the suspects were also on a motorcycle. During the incidents one of the suspects brandished what appeared to be a firearm.

The suspects are described as two young black men believed to be in their 20s; one brown skinned the other of darker complexion, both wearing dark coloured clothing and helmets with visors traveling on a white motorcycle.

Two men were arrested shortly afterwards in connection with these occurrences and have been assisting investigators with their inquiries.

Around 11pm on Tuesday March 15th 2011 police received a report of a further robbery in similar circumstances which occurred in Paget. Shortly afterwards police officers observed persons fitting the description of the suspects and pursued them. After a high speed chase the offending cycle was lost in the Devonshire area.

Check points were put in place leading to the recovery of what is believed to be an imitation firearm and the arrest of three persons who are assisting police with their inquiries.

It is too early to confirm any links between the robberies on Monday the 14th and the robbery on Tuesday the 15th but we are considering this possibility. Police are working closely with the victims to build a comprehensive picture of events.

Officers investigating these crimes are continuing to appeal for anyone with any information about these incidents to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011 or the independent, confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477.
