Minister Congratulates Joint Maritime Operation

May 30, 2011

Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief today [May 30] congratulated the Bermuda Regiment and the Bermuda Police Service on a Joint Maritime Operation conducted over the Bermuda Day holiday.

“This co-operative effort between the uniformed services demonstrates the effectiveness of cross-training and the importance of a unified approach to national security.”

Minister Perinchief’s comment coming as the Bermuda Regiment and the Bermuda Police Service continue their Memorandum of Understanding from 2010, which will again see the Bermuda Regiment augmenting the Bermuda Police Marine Section during the upcoming summer months.

The joint operation began on Heritage Day with four soldiers attached to the Bermuda Police Marine Section in order to assist patrolling the local waters during the holiday. Sergeant Major Patterson, Lance Corporal Brangman, Private Kyle, and Private Stovell were the members of Boat Troop who assisted their Police colleagues for eight hours on the national holiday.

They are all fully qualified and experienced boat handlers who have recently returned from their two-week training with the US Coast Guard in North Carolina as part of the Regiment’s overseas training camp.

The Service teams conducted patrols of the water’s edge at Front Street, Hamilton Harbour, Paradise Lakes, and The Great Sound. The waters were mildly busy, and the team spent most of their day performing routine checks and providing a visible presence to the public.

Last summer was the first time the two Services had performed a prolonged joint Maritime patrolling operation. In 2010 the two Services conducted a successful night-time Search and Rescue operation where they located and saved a distressed young man. In addition the Police Officers and Soldiers conducted the maritime support to an aircraft crash Exercise at LF Wade Airport.

Lieutenant Colonel Brian Gonsalves, the Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Regiment said that he was very pleased with the joint operation and hopes to see the two Services working together more frequently.

He continued, “The Regiment’s role is to support the public of Bermuda and this is a very good example of how we achieve this. I am fortunate to have such dedicated and enthusiastic young men and women in Boat Troop who will answer the call when needed. They constantly train through the year so they can respond to any situation that demands their expertise.”
