St Peter’s Church To Exhibit Centuries Old Bible

June 25, 2011

2011 marks the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, and St Peter’s Church in St George’s is marking this occasion with a special display of the church’s copy of the bible which was printed in London by Robert Barker in 1640.

A service to mark this occasion will take place tomorrow [June 26] at 6pm and will consist of Evening Prayer with Psalm tunes from 17th century. All the readings will be from the King James Bible. The vestry will be open from 5pm for those interested in viewing the bible.

The 370-year-old bible is bound with the Book of Common Prayer and a Psalter with music for singing the Psalms, which is prefaced with a page signed ‘Robert Gill, His Book 1703’.

The Church administrator told us Mr Gill may have been the church’s singing clerk at that time [whose responsibility it was to lead the congregation in singing] and in the margins of the Psalter can been seen notations written by him as well as staves of music showing new tunes for hymns.

Also on display is the church’s restored and rebound copy of a Geneva Bible printed in 1594, although the date says 1495 on the title page, which is a well known typographical error. It was printed in London in the time of Queen Elizabeth by her official printer, Christopher Barker. This Bible was repaired and rebound in 1936. Both bibles are accompanied by descriptive panels.

    I blame the UBP.

  3. Original (Original) says:

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with displaying a historical work of fiction. I can’t even blame the UBP for this one.

  4. WellSaid says:

Either way, it’s an important piece of our past and glad that it has been preserved.

  5. Stop Pointing ya Fingers says:

Do you all see????? That K J B is only 400 years old!! However, the one you call Jesus died over 2000 years ago! Doesn’t anyone see something wrong with that sentence????

Im just saying is all. I could go on but doupt there is enough room in this box to put my full thoughts and facts into script. Besides it might spark a few comments from the firm beleivers in the KJB.

Nope just something wrong with your level of knowledge on the topic.

      LOL

        I knew someone would comment!!

I said what I said because i wanted to see who would respond and determine their level of knowledge on the subject!!

That was said to point out that the KJB is not the center of the biblical word. As all world reknown scholars know and point out (which can be found in various encyclopedias and all across the internet and other books), the KJB differs from the bibles that scholars wrote before its initial publication. A difference that can sway ones mind to interpret a verse or even a whole chapter completely in a whole nother direction. And if you do not beleive me, then here is an easy one. Pick up the KJB and another bible (anyone, doesn’t matter) and compare a few lines. Then when u notice the slight difference, go deeper to more profound scriptures and notice the difference.

Im not trying to sway you from your beleifs, I am a beleiver of God as well. I just want you to open up your mind and acknowledge the truth that is hidden
