Police Seize 40 More Marijuana Plants

July 27, 2011

Police have made their sixth seizure of cannabis plants in recent weeks, this time in the Radnor Road, Smiths area yesterday.

A Police spokesperson said, “On Tuesday July 26, The Bermuda Police Service seized 40 of what are believed to be cannabis plants in various stages of growth in the Radnor Road, Smiths area. An investigation into this seizure has commenced.”

“This is yet another example of the community working together with the police to eradicate illegal drugs from their neighbourhoods.”

“Members of the public can contact the Police or the independent, confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477. Anyone with information about this particular investigation is encouraged to contact Police on 295-0011.”

Police have been seizing marijuana plants every few days over the last few weeks. Yesterday’s incident follows after the seizure of 15 cannabis plants from the Cedar Park Road, Devonshire area on July 21.

The day before that 115 plants were found in Sandys, some 7 feet tall. Less than two weeks prior - on July 14 – officers located cannabis plants in the Tudor Hill, Southampton.

On July 4 plants 5 foot tall were found in the Smith’s Hill Drive, St. David’s area, which was a few days after 4 foot plants were found on June 27 in an undisclosed area in St. David’s. In addition, police seized 250lbs of cannabis in the Warwick area last week, for which Victor Roberts has been charged for.

In a recent poll of Bernews readers, 79% said feel cannabis be decriminalized, with 43% saying for small amounts for personal use only, while 36% said yes to overall legalization. 21% of readers voted against legalizing cannabis.

Cannabis laws range worldwide; some nations have decriminalized cannabis, while in others possession of cannabis can result in the death penalty.

Amsterdam is famous for its liberal drug laws and coffeehouses, while the Middle East and South East Asia are known for their strict laws, with some nations instituting the death penalty for marijuana possession.

    So long sanity..

    • Spectator says:

      Haha I feel you.

“This is yet another example of the community working together with the police to eradicate illegal drugs from their neighborhoods.”

Why aren’t we as stringent in eradicating most plagues from our community? Can we start with loud bikes and heavy-polluting vehicles? I’m trying to sleep at night without the aid of cannabis but these bikes are too loud; are they illegally loud? Maybe I should try some Eszopiclone to help me sleep instead: it’s legal if prescribed, some side effects but don’t worry they’ve tested mice to make sure it won’t damage a human liver.

Can we brand cannabis? Someone call Merck Pharmaceuticals, they’re good at selling pills people want. Can they brand a THC pill and sell it in the Western world so we can buy a generic in a couple of years? It will help with costs but I am not sure if the high will be as good.

Yours in Peace (and love), roots and culture.

      • star man says:

It is legally sold as ‘Marinol,’a registered trademark of Solvay Pharmaceuticals. It’s pure THC. The natural substance, however, is still illegal. Doesn’t make much sense, does it.

This so-called New Prohibition is based on ignorance, blatant lies, racism and the vested interests of the criminal justice industry in the U.S. It’s really quite political and certainly not based on truth.

        • Warrior 1 says:

THE USA have held patents on cannibinoids since 2002….Ya dats right the cure for cancerous tumours…Also you dont want the AMA to supply it if you think its expensive now….thats why its kept illegal….TIME FOR A CHANGE!!!

        • Xeonocide says:

Wrong. Marinol is a synthetic replica of THC. It is not the real deal by any means. The irony behind it is you create an expensive replica of a compound (THC) which is already readily available in nature. Why would you want to do that? Why well you can’t patent a herb that’s why. Its all a joke. A complete and utter joke.

        • weed grower says:

I toltally agree.Never in the history of man kind has anyone ever died from marijuan, but yet in the U.S it’s a scedule1 drug, meaning its on the same level as Herion! It was only made elegal in the U.S in the 1920 through media properganda starting that if you smoke wee,it’ll cause you to get reaped & killed by the NEGROS & the LATIN comunity…its pure political.ThE United States governments spend 3.5 billoin dollars a year trying to prove that marijuana isn’t good for ones health! Why spend so much money trying to prove a substance usafe if it’s already been made elegal? The #1 aguement is that marijuans can cause cancer if inhaled, all over the fact that is a cabrbon based substace..OPEN UP YOUR EYES WORLD.Any carbon based subtance that is ingested will eventually cause this…don’t blame it on marijuana alone!!!

Although it is not the subject of this thread I have to empathize with some of ‘spectator’s’ feelings. How come the police can find these obscure herb plantations but do nothing about the horrendously noisy bikes and cars with illegal license plates right under their noses ?
They (the Police) don’t even seem to know that H registration vehicles are banned from the eastern end of Harbour Road .
Don’t get me started on the other things they seem oblivious to ..

    • enough says:

Emphasis is gangs, guns, drugs and violent crime. Look back at multiple threads and you’ll see folks here, like you, bleating on about cops dealing with traffic matters. The Commissioner said that he heard that call and agreed, the BPS should not be focusing its resources there.
To people like you, they are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
In this day and age are you really saying that anyone should care about a noisy bike or a licence plate that has the wrong size of lettering. Get some persepective.

    • a lil backup says:

The Bermuda Government has taken pretty much all fun out of life for the youth did you know that we cant even sit off like at a park with out being harassed by the police they say that they want us to enjoy life but how can u do that without the police chasing us off the road but yet you all say get the children outta the house but yet when we are out of the house we get harassed

      • Get a clue says:

There are regularly shortages of cocaine, i would say even more so then weed. You probably aren’t in contact with the people that would know this so no worries.
Haven’t heard of the type of weed shortages we experienced in the mid 2000′s and in quite a while, just certain areas would be dry and i habitual user.(my girl even gets mad says that i spend more time with mary then her smh, shes my first love)

  17. ALL A HOAX says:

OK let me get this straight. They recieve a tip off for all these illegal drugs right? Then go and seize the plants???????? and then they ask and I quote:

Members of the public can contact the Police or the independent, confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477. Anyone with information about this particular investigation is encouraged to contact Police on 295-0011.”

So why dont they set up a sting and see who goes to the patches???????

    um jus saying?

    • Derek Simons says:

Maybe their putting them out in these spots and saying they are getting tips.
To setup a sting and catch them will be to hard for them to do!!!

  18. Looking says:

Do you really think Someone is sniching all of a sudden, I dont think so it does not take a great mind to work out that where there is lots of trees that provide cover. All the police have to do is look in the trees around them wow

    • Rockfish#1and#2 says:

If growing ganja becomes commonplace, growers/dealers will get even more territorial which will result in an increase in violence. The BPS are correct for putting these local farmers out of business—-fast!

  19. hold up says:

    LEGALIZE IT!

  20. Might as well LEGALIZE IT! Let everyone have there own lil patch & u can carry up to a certain amount.LEGALIZE IT!

  21. Totally Disgusted says:

    just sad!

  22. amen says:

Hallelujah! Great work BPS! Get the guns and drugs out of here! Wonderful news between this and that $10million seize! Whew…you druggies are going to have a tough end to your summer and I love it!

    • will says:

we ‘druggies’, my friend everyone uses drugs, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, even sugar is a drug…you use aspirin for headaches well thats a drug…so you are druggie as well…just because its illegal don’t mean its necessarily bad for you

  23. Red&Blue(&Green) says:

If they were looking for the hard stuff and the users of them how difficult would it be? I mean, why sit on Front Street waiting for people to get on bikes? Go upstairs to a certain nightclub and you’ll see the guys you just gave the coke to selling it out in the open, oh wait, I think I answered my own question there.
I got pulled over the other day for a stop and search outside a spot on north shore where I have seen/smelt/bought weed from since I was growing up. Yet they’re standing on the road stopping people in cars and on bikes. When I asked why they didn’t just go inside (public place – not snitching on someone’s home) they just laughed. Funny how? I refuse to believe that if we ALL know what’s going on then where is the disconnect between them and us? (Public and paid civil servants) It’s not because people don’t talk, I know people talk, it’s because there is obviously a level of protection going on. Which is why this whole summer has been about tackling the grows that produced so well last year and allowed us to have $500 ounces of locally grown produce! (By the way, all you straight laced people out there; we used to be INTERNATIONALLY known for more than rum) Has anyone heard of a big bust on what’s come into the country? There was a time when it was every week. Now they have someone else’s stash to rip off and their losses are minimal.

As for the whole legalization debate, well they have patented a synthetic THC, and yes it is used for a wide array of bodily problems; its main problem is that you cannot synthesize how chemicals act in the human brain and body; the natural chemical make up reacts in a natural way to natural barriers and carriers. A little different from a bit of powder formed together in a machine and with a whole heap of side effects (FYI again straight laced people: hungry, happy, sleepy. that’s all it should do, not nausea, depression suicidal thoughts and or actions). Also, how can you say that THC in its NATURAL, GOD GIVEN form is wrong and THC in its synthetic MAN made form is good? This cannot be the case or we would all be eating meals in pill form. Why is it that they can say that Marinol is a wonder drug that only cost $4 billion to research and pass through FDA ratings when they have never invested a fraction of that trying to work out if they just ground up a bit and digested it, would it have the same effect?

I’ll tell you why. You cannot trademark a plant. You cannot make money from something that people can produce for themselves. Well you can, but not as much (which is why even huge farming co-ops make less than Pfizer etc). It’s for the same reasons that G.E. bought the patent (for $millions) for a never dying light bulb and then tore the plans up immediately.

Apathy is an unfortunate state that some users of this “drug” reach, it gets to a point where it’s no longer the cool thing to do, but you do it because you enjoy it. When this time comes, your vocal support diminishes, which is why I’m betting the majority of people loudly advocating the legalization are under 25. We live in a society with an aging populous, and it’s getting worse.

People wonder why it is that the youth of today aren’t like we were or how our parents were, I’ll render my opinion why: when I was younger I was free to make my mistakes. Yes I had rules I had to follow, but they were more along the lines of finishing broccoli before ice cream and homework before I could go and play. But I worked out ridiculously fast that anything I was told was dangerous and that I couldn’t do it, was fun and something I should do (cue Admiralty House cliffs).

Before it was criminalized it was called the “Evil Weed”, during the wars and when it was needed for ropes etc it was “Hemp for Victory”, after the war it didn’t make you kill, but it made white girls sleep with black guys, after that it was a Hippie thing and anti-patriotic, then it became (and I quote Regan on this) something that “gets young people together and talking” like that’s a problem. He said that why do we need a crutch for life? Between sips of scotch. Nowadays it funds terrorism, which is laughable because to legalize it would remove the demand for Afghan sticky black (heroin and hash) overnight.
The message on this plant has changed so many times over the years and there are only two constants in its history. 1. There has never been an independent study on the effects that has been accepted by any US/UK government (to a point where finished studies are discredited by those who commissioned them in the first place) and 2. People still smoke it. Speaking of which…

    • bits says:

Stop comparing Hemp with herb … it’s like comparing poison ivy with Brazilian Pepper trees.

Hemp has industrial uses only .. it’s not smoked like herb is .

      • serg says:

lol you know nothing, hemp is weed with d thc drawn out of it n it does get smoked like weed gets u really dizzy tho you can get a pack of 20 hemp joints for a fiver from dat shop cross from lattratoria and d rasta stor on angle street

        • hahaha says:

those “hemp” cigarrettes are crappy tobacco products from India, moron

I cannot believe you actually believe you can smoke hemp and get high, dont make me laugh

Hemp DOES NOT have the thc extracted you moron.

Hemp is a NATURALLY occuring strain of cannabis with very very low levels of THC. It is classified as “Hemp” when its thc content is SO LOW that you cannot get high off it!

So don’t tell me you can get a high off hemp. Even IF you were actualyl smoking it, you wouldn’t get high.

      @ truth
being that you focused on smoking a drug, what do you say to people that don’t consume it by smoking it. As I am sure you are aware that you can vaporize or cook it into and teas foods which negates ALL health effects caused by smoking.

Cannabis is the only known natural plant which kills cancer cells and tumors.

YES. It is proven in numerous studies and is being implemented into future medicines and treatments.

How can you kill what could save our lives?

Why punish a plant and us for using it, when all it does is make you a little relaxed and smile a touch? Having four beers is a stronger and more physically-inabling effect!

Did you know that the American FDA did a study on drugs, and found that:

CAFFEINE is 5 times for dangerous for our body than Cannabis!

LSD, Magic Mushrooms are virtually HARMLESS with no danger whatsoever, no addiction potential either.even MDMA in its pure form is beneficial, not even that dangerous!

Want to know WHICH DRUGS were the most dangerous?

    1. Alcohol and Tobacco were up there at the top with HEROIN and CRACK
    2. Perscription meds were up there with COCAINE and the heroin etc.

Coffee was half way down the list, with Cannabis way below it, and the hallucinogens at the bottom with no risk.

LET US RE-EVALUATE OUR POSITION ON DRUGS, BECAUSE WHAT WE CALL ILLEGAL DRUGS ARE ACTUALLY SAFER THAN THE LEGAL ONES!!!!!!

    Now ain’t that a coincidence!!!!!!
