Digicel To Offer Long Distance

October 13, 2011

Digicel, who recently acquired local internet service provider Transact, will now offer long distance service to its postpaid mobile customers.

“Digicel Long Distance marks the next phase in our development as a telecommunications company,” stated Digicel Bermuda CEO, Wayne Caines.

“Ultimately, we are always looking for ways to provide our customers with solutions that are effortless, reliable, and convenient. With Digicel Long Distance, our customers will receive one bill with all their mobile phone expenses included.”

“They will receive rates that enable them to stay connected to family and friends around the world at prices they can afford. This ease and this streamlined approach, combined with our competitive rates, are the real benefit of Digicel Long Distance.”

Among the three plans, the $35 Digicel Unlimited plan with unlimited calls to the USA, Canada, UK and Ireland provides an affordable option for callers who need to call the most popular international destinations frequently.

Top Caribbean destinations, such as Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad, will be available via the Digicel Caribbean plan. The Digicel Ultimate plan provides all around rates to the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and the rest of the world without a monthly subscription fee.

Mr. Caines continued, “Digicel Bermuda is proud to be part of a larger Digicel Group, which operates globally. Our local company is Bermuda driven and Bermuda focused, but it is our pleasure to leverage our global connections to provide such amazing value for our customers who communicate with friends and family around the world.”

Digicel plans to roll out the Digicel Long Distance service to other wireless network customers and fixed telephone line users in the near future. For more information about Digicel Long Distance, visit their website.

    • wallstreet says:

This is great news for a Bermuda Company. Why should KeyTech and the other have a duomonoply on media. Wishing innovative Digicel all the best. They do so much in the community they are truly appreciated.

      • George says:

Digicel is not a Bermudian majority owned company you need to check your facts Wallstreet! It might be fronted by a Bermudian but that’s as Bermudian as it gets.

  2. Finally Free says:

Congratulations Digicel for breaking this long distance duopoly we’ve suffered with for all these years.
Competition is good for Bermuda and now I can have everyhing on one bill.
Now if only I can get a break on my internet.
    Let the game begin!

  3. THE HELL says:

LMAO another scam $35 unlimited.. If u don’t make long distance calls on a frequent basis its not worth it. I use TBI and its way cheaper..

    • SMH says:

You need to check your facts. Always speak on what you know…if not keep your trap shut. Go check out TBI rates. LOL!

    • Honestly says:

I use TBI as well and will not change to the new service. I usually pay at least $9 or less a month and it is working for me. I will not give Digicel another dollar. I am still waiting for them to have promotions for current users. O well contract is up time to get out of there! LOL

  4. Chart says:

3 long distance providers for a village of 60,000 people? There’s gonna be an implosion in the telecom space.

  5. golden crisp says:

Something sounds fishy here. I was under the impression that such companies like Digicel, TBI, CellOne etc cannot offer bundle packages. Can someone please help me to understand how Digicel is allowed to do this?

    • Finally Free says:

Digicel purchased Transact who already had the license. The LD service will likely remain under the Transact name.
You sound like a disgruntled TBI,CellOne person.

      • golden crisp says:

You know what they say about assumptions. And when you have Skype, you don’t need TBI, Digicel or CellOne. :) So I am not disgruntled at all.

  6. Finally Free says:

    Hey “the hell”
It saves me and my wife each month. We pay $40 to TBI for their unlimited plan and she uses over 700 minutes a month to the US alone.
    So do the math.
Now it’ll be $35.00.How is that a Scam??
You are correct though if you don’t call overseas a lot one of the other Digicel plans are still cheaper than their competition.

  7. Terry says:

Chart…..go west. It’s all about ching ching…….don’t you guys ever learn. Solicite Telco or what ever their name is today.

    Thats right…they own…………………………Cane an Able…..

    • Talk2mestr8 says:

      • Terry says:

No way Kee Mo Sabee………………Yoo smoke tooooo muctch/mutch…….High Oh Platinum………..

  8. Chronic Backpain (Original) says:

I don’t pay long distance anymore as I use the internet. Of course I’m paying through the a** for that. Bermuda must be about the most expensive place for the internet – THAT KEEPS GOING OFF!!

  9. 32n64w says:

I just want a plan that offers reasonable data & voice roaming charges. Both Bermuda providers are absolutely screwing their clients and falsely blaming the roaming partners for the usurious charges.

Any visitor to the island can contact their local cell provider in advance and sign up for either short or long term international data roaming services and enjoy unlimited usage for a modest fee (often times well below $50 per month!!).

As Digicel and CellOne charge roaming partners the same rates paid for Bermuda customers roaming on foreign networks its clear we’re getting screwed with the lion’s share of the supposed roaming fees being nothing more than Digicel and CellOne’s massive mark-ups.

    • So True says:

Unlimited roaming for under $50???? There’s no such thing as unlimited roaming at any price. If I’m wrong please provide the link to the so called overseas carriers that offer this. Good luck….

  10. Terry says:

So whats the best package. Realy. Tell me. Someone tell me the best for long/short/minutes et all.

Whats you monthly payment for pre.

  11. Clinton J. A. Paynter OBA Affiliated says:

The big question here is… Why was Digicel allowed to buy Transact in the first place? Other companies wanted to do this exact same thing in order to offer package bundles but were prevented by Government. The new soon to drop telecoms legislation has been 5 years in the making… Everyone has been waiting for this and Digicel was allowed to jump the gun. The question is why?

  12. Rockfish says:

All this talk about the Telecoms Reform to come – what about Keytech?? They already had Logic and M3 in addition to BTC – that whole time they were already in position to make the move when the reform happened – heck they still are as they are still involved with CellOne – Where’s the competition there???

    • Globalview says:

Profits will always come first. Why should a company, such as Keytech, compromise their bottom line in favor of market reform? If the market is calling for reform, it’s the regulator who should be pushing the agenda, not the privately held operators.
The infrastructure connecting Bermuda to the rest of the world needs to be paid for somehow, as do future upgrades. Laying cables and shore-end equipment along with OAM&P isn’t cheap.
As was said in an earlier comment, numerous service providers catering for a small market/population – far from any continental, high cap infrastructure can only lead to a service provider implosion, likely in the form of consolidation/acquisition. The legalities of the recent Digicel purchase of Transact should be challenged, and I would’ve thought that challenge would come from the other service providers.
If the market is looking for cost reduction, then the regulator needs to work with the service providers in crafting regulations that will allow service providers to survive, (and jobs retained), whilst delivering service to the market at competitive and realistic rates.

  13. Telebomb says:

Oh man…does this mean even longer lines at Digihel? I had a problem with my phone late last Thursday and had hell getting someone on the phone to help. Decided to go in person on Friday to get help….gave up waiting in line as they were completely understaffed. Decided to stop by at the Tech show that afternoon and there was a huge booth overstaffed with Digicel people. There lies the problem with most larger companies in Bermuda. 10 % of staff are managers that spend much of their time and money offsite in “meetings and business lunches”doing everything but managing”, 60% of staff involved in marketing, 10% on in house sales and 10% in accounts …leaving a small proportion of staff dealing with support. In a small place…good service and word of mouth will make or break you. All the 10′ signs and fancy booths wont bring the customer back.

  14. Jonknee barns says:

Very interesting. Cable and Wireless (now Bermudalink) is owned by Bragg a Canadian Company. Given a license by a PLP Government. Where were the protestations then. Was that some backhanded deal ?

m3 (owned by Keytech) merges with (cellular one) to form Cellone. Now owned by Cellone,Keytech and ATN (an American company)

The market goes from 3 cell companies to 2 Now the two companies who just benefited from the Government Granting them a license, 5 months later complain that Digicel are circumventing Legislative Reform.

6 months ago Northrock announced they would be rolling out mobile (cellular) telephone service. There where no protestations then.

the Government have vacillated with reference to passing the Telecoms Legislation. I am sure that Digicel could not sit and wait for that process to take place.

I have worked in this industry for years. I know that in order for Digicel to get a license to carry Long Distance Traffic, a number of legal and regulatory hurdles would have had to have been jumped.

They obviously have lawfully obtained permission to carry long distance traffic (Min of Finance, Min of Trade and Industry, The Attorney General and the Min with responsibility for Telecoms)

This is a exciting time for Telecoms. companies need to stop hiding behind the guise of legislative reform And get with the times. Competition is healthy! If you want to give Digicel a run for there money. Drop your prices and stop whining let the customer decide?

  15. Time! says:

What I find funny is how ignorant people are
Clinton ( oba affiliated) have you heard of key tech are you aware of what they own, and how long they have owned it. Did u have such strong objections when cable and wireless was sold or with marketplace stores or hep and their ownerships.

I am not even a digicel customer but more variety is better options for the consumer. Sype magic jack, whatever it takes we need choices.

To suggest plp interference is non progressive and the sort of boogie man stuff that most people thought the OBA was going to stay away from. If there is something that you know as a fact speak on it and enlighten but to put vague innuendo it tacky and old. Speak or shush.
