Miss Bermuda Jana Outerbridge has started off the Miss World competition in tremendous form — making the top 36 in the event’s “Beach Beauty” qualifier.

The East End native made the qualifying cut at the London-based pageant out of the the 120-plus beauty queens taking part in the global competition.

Joining Miss Bermuda in the top 36 are Argentina, Aruba, Bolivia, Brazil, France, England, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Korea, Belarus, Israel, Kazakhstan , Martinique, Mauritius, Moldova, New Zealand, Panama, Paraguay, Northern Ireland, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, St Barthelemy, Sweden, Uganda, Ukraine, United States, US Virgin Islands, Venezuela, Wales and Zimbabwe.

The 61st Miss World Pageant will be held on November 6, 2011, in London and broadcast to a world-wide TV audience.

An accomplished equestrian, Ms Outerbridge has competed in many local show jumping competitions including the Annual Exhibition. She has represented Bermuda internationally through the Bermuda Equestrian Federation and was a member of the gold medal winning team which competed in the 2004 Caribbean Equestrian Association.

While in university in Tennessee, she was voted Miss SOCA [Students Of Caribbean Ancestry 2008/9], Miss Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. [2009/10], and won a university modeling competition and was named “Miss Allure Modeling Troop” 2010.

She volunteers at the WindReach Recreational Village on Saturday mornings working with disabled children. Ms Outerbridge is also a past Bermuda International Business Association [BIBA] top speed interviewee, danced at Somerset School of Dance and received the Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme silver medal.

The daughter of Gregory Outerbridge Sr. and Glenda Outerbridge, she said her favourite quotation is: “Why strive to be good when you can strive for greatness?”

Ms Outerbridge, who represented St. George’s, won the 2011 Miss Bermuda Pageant on June 12th, beating 15 other competitors for the title. The 22-year-old is a graduate of Tennessee State University and participated in the Cabinet Office Jumpstart Programme working as a Cabinet Office intern.

Earlier this year Ms Outerbridge told Bernews: “If I am fortunate to be the next Miss Bermuda and even if I am not I want the people of Bermuda to know that it is never too late to achieve any goal you set in life. It only takes one person to believe in you and that one person is you.

“As individuals if we work to make positives changes it can only have a positive impact on our island. We must all begin to take responsibility for the current state of our island and work diligently to make it an even better place for current generations and those to come.”

“As I aspire to be a psychologist — my passion being mental health – I would like to encourage everyone to take the state of their minds more seriously. Our minds are such valuable tools and we must all pay special attention to what they need. The stigma often places on receiving assistance for a mental condition must change. As an island we never know what life may throw at us or when our current situation may alter.”

Apart from the Miss World 2011 award, the various categories of awards to be won at the London event include Miss World Top Model, Miss World Beach Beauty, Miss World Talent, Miss World Sports, Beauty With A Purpose (Miss World Scholarship), Best World Dress Designer (Spectacular Evening Wear), Miss Photogenic, Best National Costume (Spectacular National Dress), Miss Personality, Spectacular Swimwear, Miss People’s Choice and Miss Contestants’ Choice.

Thirty-two years ago, when the Miss World was also held in London in November, Bermuda’s own Gina Swainson won the crown, marking the first — and only — time a Bermudian won a major beauty pageant. Earlier in 1979 Miss Swainson had been first runner-up at that year’s Miss Universe pageant.

Ms Swainson remains the joint highest placed woman to have competed at both pageants.

Does such an Academy exist in Bermuda?

      • sunshine says:

What is meant by Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is that she sat exams whilst a student at Somerset School of Dance, which is a registered company with the RDA (not all the ballet/dance schools in Bermuda offer the exams), so it is quite an achievement.

        All the best, Jana
