Charity Ride For Paralympic Hopeful

March 5, 2012

Team Fast Forward Bicycle Works rode 100 miles yesterday [Mar.4] in windy conditions to raise funds for Bermuda Paralympic hopeful Jessica Lewis.

Ms Lewis made history as the first Bermudian to compete in athletics at a major para-sport championships when she competed at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Her dream is to compete in London 2012 and become only the third athlete from Bermuda to compete at a Paralympic Games, following in the footsteps of Kirsty Anderson and Sandy Mitchell who both competed in Equestrian events.

Sixteen bicyclists embarked on yesterday’s ride at 7:00am and rode the first four hours as a group.

After a brief break, the riders remounted to complete the challenge with the team’s junior riders joining in to show their support for the cause. The actual 100 mile challenge was completed by most riders in five hours and 38 minutes.

It is estimated that the ride has raised in excess of $5,000 to assist Ms Lewis in attending qualifying events in the US in the coming months.

Anyone wishing to donate to the effort can drop off funds to Bicycle Works at 13 Tumkins Lane, Hamilton.
