Weed epidemic?!?!?! You’re funny! Cannabis has been used as far back as the Egyptians & Aztecs. The reason why it was first made illegal was because of its wide spread use amongst African Americans & Latin Americans in the 1930′s. The head of the first American narcotics bureau was a racist that started the prohibition of cannabis as an excuse to imprison African Americans & Deport Hispanics. His propaganda has been carried down throughout the years & has been altered every time it has been disproved to a new fallacy. Even in Bermuda many citizens have been brainwashed by this propaganda & our drug laws revolve around it. Your comment is proof of the brainwashing because you automatically assume the bust was for weed & not cocaine or another drug even though the article does not state specifics. The most widespread drug epidemic here is alcohol. Ask any older Bermudian who was around in the early 70s & they’ll tell you how many more people smoked weed back then in Bermuda.

  5. Pastor Syl says:

I didn’t see that marijuana was specified in this article. Maybe y’all know something more than what was reported.

    • Come correct says:

It would be a nice change to see something of actual substance being found, don’t see much of that in the news anymore, but you can see the users.

  6. BobtheBuilder says:

They (the police) only look for marijuana. They don’t look for hard drugs like coke, heroin, meth, or any hard man made stuff. Exstacy also. When have you ever hear of a major bust of some hard drugs. Doesn’t happen and won’t ever happen.

  7. Dee says:

That is totally untrue Bob. The Police don’t go “looking” for a specific drug. In this case (and many others) they acted on information received a.k.a. a “tip” and this is what was found. Maybe it seems that way because so much weed is sold on the island. Also, lots of drugs are intercepted but it doesn’t make the news. Just last month ecstasy was seized in a shipment but it never made the news. If you review the Police/Customs annual stats you will see where plenty of hard drugs are seized. Just because you don’t hear about it don’t assume it doesn’t happen…

    • Tommy Chong says:

I tried looking for this ecstasy seizure you mentioned on the crime stoppers & The Bermuda Police reports site & the only ecstasy seize mentioned was the tourist on the cruise with a small personal amount. These sites mention all police reports so I’m not sure where you’re getting you’re information from.

You’re only right when it comes to cocaine in hard drugs seized & this comes from the stats you pointed out 168358 grams of cocaine 159608 grams of cannabis 688 grams of heroine 2 grams of ecstasy all seized in 2011. Not meaning that cannabis is a hard drug but I put it there for comparison. More needs to be done about heroine & ecstasy if the BPS if our laws continue to insist prohibition is the way to go. The majority of the rock bottom hard drug addicts in Bermuda smoke heroine over cocaine so there should be the same amount or more of heroine on this island. This means for some reason the BPS are lacking in seizures of heroine. Maybe this is not the police’s fault since heroine is the biggest money makers out all substances so those at the top spreading it around are probably the most organized & harder to catch. As for ecstasy I know there’s way more of this on island than has been seized. Since the escape & clay house rave days it has been well rooted & I can see it in tell tale signs of many clubbers whenever I’ve gone out recently. This again is most likely not the fault of police as ecstasy pills can be coated to caver the scent & it can look like anything even household vitamins. Ecstasy is very dangerous because it is accepted amongst younger users then cocaine or heroine & many are under the misconception that it is harmless. Then there is the inhalants that have reported being used which I’m not sure is just kids messing around on the census that was taken or really the truth. If Bermuda has gotten to this point in drugs then police have big problems in their hands since it is almost impossible to get a handle on people inhaling computer cleaners, butane lighters & anything else these idiots think is fun to breath in to get a high.

  8. Dee says:

People always think Police don’t forget Customs is responsible for drug interdiction at the ports. There are the container ships, airport, cargo, etc. so these seizures may not be reflected in the Police stats. I’m not sure if Customs publishes their stats annually like the Police do. The point I was trying to make is that he is wrong to state that the authorities do not target hard drugs because that is simply untrue. I agree with you Tommy that more needs to be done about the hard drugs, but I can imagine that its a heck of a lot easier to smuggle in heroin than marijuana just by virtue of its bulk. Heroin could be put in something very flat and you probably wouldn’t even know it was there. These bad guys are just getting so creative in their methods and its up to the authorities to keep up with the trends and think outside of the box.
