Health Department: Unusual Rise In Flu Cases

June 13, 2012

Reports received by the Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the Department of Health from private doctors’ offices, laboratories and the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, confirm an increase in the number of individuals being seen with respiratory symptoms and cases of confirmed influenza on the island.

A Health Ministry spokesperson said, “The rise in cases of severe respiratory illness, including influenza cases requiring hospital care, is above the level ordinarily seen at this time of the year and is an unusual occurrence in late spring.

“This situation reminds us that influenza and influenza-like illnesses can remain a threat to the community long after the usual peak season during the winter months of January and February.

“The Department of Health is closely monitoring the occurrence of these illnesses in the community and is grateful for the cooperation of private physicians, laboratories and the infection prevention team at the hospital for their heightened surveillance and timely reporting of these illnesses to the Epidemiology & Surveillance Unit.

“If you, or a family member, have been in contact with a person that has been ill with flu-like symptoms and you develop a high fever, cough, muscle aches or become unwell, you are encouraged to telephone your doctor for advice. It is important to seek early medical advice and/or attention if symptoms are severe.

“If you visit a healthcare provider for care, please inform the front desk staff immediately about your respiratory symptoms. You may ask or be asked to put on a mask when you arrive to minimize the risk to others in the waiting room area.

“To reduce the spread of respiratory viruses and influenza, as always, we encourage you and your family to adhere to frequent hand washing with soap and water and to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or coughing into your upper sleeve or elbow. It is especially important to avoid school, the workplace or public areas when experiencing respiratory symptoms.

“Supplies of the seasonal influenza vaccine are still available until the end of June and this vaccine is considered effective against the current strains of flu. In the fall, we are all encouraged to have another annual influenza vaccine for that season’s strains of influenza.

“All individuals are encouraged to be routinely vaccinated against influenza, and this advice is particularly important for young children, senior citizens, pregnant women and people with chronic heart, lung, or kidney disease or suppression of their immune system.”

I bet any money the people getting the flu are primarily those who got it injected into their bodies. How in 2012 medical authorities can throw around such non-scientific terms (“considered to be effective”) and haven’t remain unchallenged is beyond me. Try providing EVIDENCE that it is effective e (hint: there is none. But there is plent of evidence that injecting mercury, aluminum, conjugated animal DNA into your cells is a bad idea). The irony is their suggestions not only created a bad situation, but if followed now will make a bad situation worse. Wake up Bermuda.

I agree with the above. The only time I had the flu really badly was the time I got a flu shot.As for the shots that young children get I am convinced they are the cause of the increase in autism. It is a case of drug companies and doctors making lots of money.

Clearly the UPB is to blame for this. If not then the OBA – or expats in general. Certainly not the PLP so stop it you bunch of racists!

It is only an n=1 sample but I got my first ever flu shot last October and after years of suffering terribly each winter with up to four bouts of it, I have been healthy.

I am a believer in the power of vaccines and will be a regular for the flu vaccine.

Flu vaccine= protection. Non -vacination = exposure to risk. Influenza is a serious illness. Protect yourself and your family each year.

Today, any sort of fake vaccine can be found on the black market because unfortunately in the US and Bermuda, pharmaceuticals are a major money maker in healthcare. I and my children receive the flu vaccines every year and we have had no episodes thus far. It doesnt prevent influenza but significantly decreases the likelihood and if I do catch the virus, its much less severe. With anything there are risks…however you must be informed by data and scientific research before making far reaching claims. Flu vaccines can be obtained through the government clinic and once you recieve it, your bodies needs a week or two to build up enough antibodies to fight off the virus.

Some people posting on this thread are clearly speaking fire and brimstone and have not consulted with their personal doctor. If we listen to them, you will start seeing kids limping with shorter limbs and a rise in pediatric deaths as things like polio, measles and smallpox make a comeback.
