Armed Robbery At Flatts Jewellery Store

December 5, 2012

[Updated - Around 11am a man carrying a gun entered the Link to Link jewellery store in Flatts, stole a large quantity of jewellery store and escaped on the back of a motorcycle]

A short while ago this morning [Dec 5] there was an armed robbery at a Flatts Store. The police are presently on scene investigating. Details surrounding the incident are unclear at this time, however we will update with additional information as able.

Update 11.58am: The incident occurred at the Link to Link jewellery store. We are told there was one suspect, armed with a gun, who escaped with a bag of items at around 11am.

Update 12.12pm: Police spokesman Dwayne Caines confirmed that one person, armed with what appeared to be a gun, robbed the store and escaped with a large quantity of jewellery.

Update 12.43pm: A video statement from Chief Inspector Tracy Adams is below. He confirmed that no one was injured, although the store clerk was obviously shaken up by the incident.

Mr Adams said they believe the suspect escaped on a motorcycle with a variety/large quantity of jewellery, and asked for anyone who may have any information to call the police on 205-0011.

Update 2.51pm: OBA National Security spokesperson Jeff Baron — a former police officer who is involved with Crime Stoppers — was at the scene and encouraged anyone who may know anything to contact the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.

Update 3.21pm: Audio of Dilton Robinson — the father of store owner Shane Robinson — speaking after the robbery is below.

He said the robber “raided the store” of the gold and customers’s packages, and was picked up by another person on a bike. He said his son is pretty devastated, as it was a “significant hit, particularly at this time of the year.”

“Hopefully the assailants will be caught,” said Mr Robinson. “And brought to justice.”

Anyone may have seen anything or can help in any way is asked to contact police on 295-0011 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477. The police said with these types of offences, people need help to offload the property they may have gotten. They have asked people to keep an eye out for anyone trying to exchange or get rid of large amounts of jewellery to contact the police.

Update 6.29pm: The police have released a full statement, it follows in full below

Around 11am on Wednesday, December 5th police officers responded to a reported robbery at Link to Link on North Shore Road in Smith’s parish. It appears that around 10:45am an unknown male entered the jewellery store brandishing what appeared to be a firearm. The offender managed to take an undisclosed quantity of jewellery before making good his escape on the back of a motorcycle. There were no reported injuries.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who may have been in the Flatts, North Shore Road, Smith’s parish area around 10:45am Wednesday, December 5th and saw any suspicious activity or anyone with any information regarding this robbery to contact the St. George’s Criminal Investigation Unit on 293-2222 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477 at the earliest opportunity.

In addition, members of the public are advised to be vigilant for any persons attempting to offload jewellery quickly without documentation. Such transactions should be treated with suspicion. Receiving stolen property is an offence punishable under the law.

    • Come Correct says:

Dwayne, the plp IS gettin back in, so stop talking your dumb sh!t before I have to find more of your words to throw back in your face. Self proclaimed uneducated man trying to use words from a falsified document. I’ll be clear, the oba can do better…because you can’t do worse than purposely bringing an island to its knees. Now go pick up a book.

      • You know I sit and smile when people respond without reading the contents for what they are really meant to say,so since you choose to take my words the wrong way and lower yourself to name calling, let me invite you to read what I said and this time with clarity.see one of the greatest faults we have as a people we want to run with a comment that has been said or written without remembering comments or history that lead up to this point and that is my friend where you and others make your greatest mistakes. The O.B.A made a comment several weeks ago that once they get in their will be no more guns and gun violence,so my comments is actually a smart ass comment at them since they have a pipe dream in believing that they can stop what we are faced with on our streets. So if you have ever read most of my opinion on other blogs on bernews about what I think about the O.B.A or their plans to become the government then you and the others below would not make the stupid comments you did about me thinking they are going to get in but sorry maybe I expect a higher level thinking out of jackasses and i see they have just proved who they are.I will close and say we should be a little more careful in taking each others words out of context.

        • Come Correct says:

Duane, when did I call you a name other than what you called yourself? Duane, please copy a link for me where I can see that exact quote from the oba that you just posted (because I know what they said, and you want to talk about taking things out of context). So your comment is actually a smart ass comment without the smart bit. Just so we can be clear Duane, on where you are coming from, I’ll go back and find more of your contradicting posts, just so you know, the last one I posted was only the first I came across. Lastly if I wanted to call you names, I could do worse, I know more about you than you think but I have no right to judge your personal life for the same reason my name says Come Correct, because IMO its not about the messenger, its about the message, and your messages are full of division. This island does not need people like you, and that’s nothing to do with skin color.

          • Only one comment and I have to be truthful, that anyone who knows me and really knows me,does know that I don’t give a care in the world what you or anyone else knows about me because my life is an open book.

As long as you and others don’t make the mistake of thinking you really know me and I am just as serious as it is stating it.for me to say that I know you or anyone else to a degree that you have said about me is something I don’t make a practice of doing and yes I take that as a challenge and respond just the same.

Just in case their are those that feel this is a tit for tat,i will clarify my position only to a degree so it hopefully can make you understand that I am sincere and passionate of everything I put my hand to when it comes to being a part of the solution and not a part of the problem because of the past and things I had to live through.

The reason why my name id on top of everything I say is because I am not a coward that hides behind a pen name like most,I am a former homosexual that comes from a family that had major drug dealers and gun importers on both sides of my family and in my immediate family.

I try to be a family man and devoted to my children but not lived a perfect life and have an outside child to prove that, now that we have got your so called i know things about you,get on with the facts of we are saying here and the topic and if I call you a name because I feel it sounds like stupidity, then in return call me what you must but don’t let name calling stop you from who you are and contributing to Bernews because your comments are agreed on at times and at time its not and that goes for all of us.Go refresh our self and lets get ready to do what we must to make a difference in what we are all faced with in this country and my shoulders are very broad so keep speaking what you feel,I really appreciate real people, hate the damn phony ones with a passion.

            • Come Correct says:

As I said, its not what I know about you that matters, none of which you mentioned, none of which needs explanation so quit the Slim Shady act. My principals stand for all of Bermuda and never include the divisive rhetoric of yours. I have one stance and one only, and that is for the people I grew with and know to love, Bermudians. I don’t give a flying f@ck about the past right now, white or black. What I do care about is equality for ALL and that time is now. Nobody can change the past. I’m sorry for your people, and my people suffered too, don’t forget that, but this is 2012! Your comments do not stand for all. My name is not at the top of what I say for various different reasons, but if I ever feel the time has come, I won’t hesitate to say exactly who I am and what I stand for. The way I see it… If not me, then who? With that said, believe me when I tell you, I am well refreshed and each and every day I take the time to prepare for the worst of what’s to come. I will not see my home in ruins! I will go down with the ship! There are no white flags here.

“Men are haunted with the vastness of eternity. Will strangers hear our names, and wonder who we were? How bravely we faught? How fiercly we loved?”

At 25 years old, I ask myself, what legacy will I leave behind? Or will I be forgotten along with the ones that did nothing.

Told to me by my dealer at the time (7 years ago and I gave that life up). “A man who stands for nothing, will fall for anything”

Check your stance Duane. Really check it.

    • MJ says:

Duane, Please get the help so desperatly need. Your comments show your pain and anguish. By the way, when did the OBA state that there will be no more guns and gun violence after 17th Dec?

        He was being sarcastic. duhhh

      • edwin says:

They made a lot of promises for after Dec.17th. but not saying when, will be many years later no matter who gets in.

    • Black Un-employed Bermudian says:

A change of Govt. is not going to stop the mess and you’ll be a fool to think it is. Only everyone working together and releasing what they know and the police and the courts doing their jobs correctly will stop this so stop with the stupid political crap!

    • Please Leave Politics says:

That’s a highly inconsiderate comment. I can’t see how you can make silly remarks when someone trying to make a living has a firearm pointed at them and then robbed. You can have your political views… but don’t be an inconsiderate dip ship!

    • Floyd says:

And JUST how do you think they can/will accomplish this. Talk is damn cheap in this instance. This is a problem to be solved by not just the authorities. Its someone’s offspring doing this crap to the detriment of the island.

  21. Unjust Realities!!!! says:

Sorry to hear about this Shane . . .keep your head up!!!

I keep reading about Bermuda becoming a third world country . . .so let me ask this . . .Is the United States a third world country?????? Each and everyday there is an armed robbery, a shooting, a car jacking . . .there are bars on the windows of stores and on people’s houses in the United States . . .and the last time I checked they were not a third world country.

Please stop using terminology that you are not versed on the definition of.

What Bermuda is experiencing is no different from other islands or other countries. We’ve just been living in “paradise” for so long that we never thought it could happen to us.

    • Hey says:

They cut your hands off if you steal in some countries, they stick drug mules in cells to rot in some countries, they allow citizens to arm themselves in the US. We are Bermuda we are not those countries and we should never wish to be or steer ourselves to be those countries. PLP please Wake up !

    • MJ says:

How can you compare the USA of 3.5 MILLION [aprox] square miles to BDA’s 21 sq miles. If you don’t mind bars on your windows then go live there or are you on the “Stop List”? The only windows with bars on them SHOULD be West Gate. How many of these Countries and Islands you mention are guns illegal ?

      • Unjust Realities!!!! says:

@MJ . . .see this is exactly why we find ourselves in the predicament that we are in . . .a$$es like you . . .but let me confirm for you, no I’m not on anyones stop list and very well educated thank you very much. Instead of saying something constructive, the first thing you do is sling dirt, name call or try and degrade someone . . . my comment regarding bars on windows was in relation to the reference about Bermuda becoming a third world country where the comments stated they have to have bars on their windows . . . my fault, obviously you wouldn’t know what a reference or inference is dumb a$$!!!!

    • A Bermudian says:

      @Unjust Realities

Very true, I couldn’t agree more. I was attended college in Baltimore city, and any of you know Baltimore, it is a very rough city. All these things that are taken place have been happening in many countries around the world for many years.

Sad but tru, small minded people thought we were untouchable, and it could never happen in a place like Bermuda. Reality check for all, we are not that different from our fellow neighbors.

      • Free says:

I couldn’t imagine what these people would say if they lived in Baltimore. These guys think they are tough here, they wouldn’t last a day in Baltimore. They even call the place “Bodymore, Murderland”.

I don’t think it excuses how Bermuda has gotten so bad with gangs but crime will still happen. We aren’t a utopia and never have been.

    • Will says:

um the US is a third world country. in fact they are more third world than other places. New Orleans and Katrina come to mind. So does there non-inclusive medical and insurance system. A true definition of a first world country is one that treats each person as equal; medical coverage and help for each and every person; and helping your country first before sending millions in aid to Israel etc… Not to mention if you need to have bars on your windows and arm yourself to the teeth with an extensive array of military equipment you arent first world. Safety should always be considered when determining whether or not a country is ‘first world’.

  22. What time did this happen?
    a
    Anybody?

  23. Winnie Dread says:

@Unjust realities so I guess it is ok to happen here because it happen elsewhere, smh. Think for a minute Bda is 21sq miles, no where to isolate oneself and get away from it all, oops i forgot there is jolly ole England.

    • A Bermudian says:

      @ Winnie Dread,

Unjust never said it was ok, he told you that this is what happens in the world. I’m sure people around the world felt the same way before it got crazy there, but it is our reality, the same way it was theirs. It’s F#@ked up, but it is what it is.

      • Come Correct says:

So are you lot saying there’s nothing we can do about it? Yea we need people to come forward with information but that isn’t being realistic if people fear the ones they will be giving information on. I believe the police aren’t doing enough and there is far more they can do, but they also need the help of legislations. Right now these scum have rights, legislate that once convicted, especilly for violent or gang related crimes, you forfeit your right as human being, because clearly you can’t live with the rest of us. Make their lives hell. To be honest, physical punishment does little to nothing, its time we hit these punks on a psycological level, we need to make them never want to repeat their actions. We need to mind f@ck these little a$$holes. There was a time in Bermuda you could leave your home with your front door unlocked, you can say times have changed and we’ll never have that peace of mind back, well you just enabled them, times have changed, and its about time we as a people and a majority DEMAND that back. This is not their island and never will be, it belongs to the peaceful citizens of this island. We should not hand this island over to a bunch of lawless thugs, but we are doing just that, simply by doing nothing. I do my part where I live, I am the eyes of my neighborhood, within the first year of me moving here I prevented 3 crimes, my neighbors thought I was the police walking the streets with my shepherd chasing down the culprits. The police are reactive, not proactive, I am always active. We need to be vigilant and relentless, stand by me, do your part and we’ll take our island back, clearly the law isn’t doing it for us. The man that was in court for beating the life out of the person that entered his home is a shining example nd deserves a medal if you ask me. You have a right to protect your family’s lives, and if I’m on a jury of your peers, I will never find you guilty of that, even if you take theirs. We as Bermudians need to stand up for ourselves. They have guns? Well there’s plenty of people out there like me and the gentleman mentioned, so they’ll need them.

        • Here is my advice to you and those that think like what you have shared here,I would advise you if you think what you said would really be an avenue to helping deal with the situation we find ourselves in,then go to the next level and take to the streets.

Now what I mean by this is not trying to be a hero and not trying to take the position of an activist or an advocate but as an observer of what is out there and when you spend about six straight months of being in the space of the unknown, only then can you begin the process of what some of us have spent the last 25 years more being directly involved in trying to help those that find themselves caught up and no where to turn but live up to a lifestyle that their friends expect from them.

Going to the law and trusting the authorities and in some cases even the politicians is one of the greatest problems we have in this whole situation, this should not be like that but the sad truth it is.this situation will take a bipartisan approach for all sides to come together.

Safety is the key and first principle in any approach of this magnitude and unfortunately we can talk as much as we want but the criminal mind and element seems to be a lot more further ahead in this country because those who are suppose to protect us have among them those that help keep the so called enemy ahead of the game.

          • Come Correct says:

Bredren, you have another post well above this to respond to, from me. I notice you’re taking advice and using full stops, but that doesn’t mean you have to start a new paragraph every time. Once again I guess you’re taking things out of context because I stated, in my neighborhood, I do my part. That means, like I said when I said “stand by me”, if we ALL do our part, the whole island is covered. I came to this conclusion because every time I’ve called the police they either don’t do anything or they’re too late, for example: Good evening, me and my girl were riding along parsons road when 2 masked men rode up asking the location of her brother and then proceeded to try and kick us off the bike… Ok so what would you like us to do about this… Your job *click*. When I call the police these days, you know what I want? For them to clean up the mess and fill out the paper work. My shepherd, as mentioned above, is an excellent on-command (in German) attack dog, he’s just never really got the concept of letting go…but I’m fine with that. If you walk into my yard with bad intentions, I will bring pain to your world, but you’ll only do it once. If you walk into my yard with a weapon, I will not hesitate to tag-team you with my dog and end your life, you will only do it once. Bring your crew to my yard, and I WILL take more of you down than there is of me, don’t doubt that. Nobody has any idea what awaits them on the other side of these gates. I’d rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

        • Unjust Realities!!!! says:

Never did I say as a people we should just fold and accept the behavior of a few. What I did say is that we are no different from other islands who are experiencing the same things. We must take off our rose colored glasses and face the realities of what our young people or people for that fact are engaging in. Just look at the meurders that have happened in the past three years and the escalation and use of more volatile weapons . . .the writing is on the wall . . . we aren’t even shocked anymore when we hear of a shooting, as it has become common to us as a people, sad but true and real.

If those of you choose to continue to live in paradise, leave your doors inlocked, windows open and then scream bloody murder when you wake up and find some fool stamnding over you with a gun!!!!!

I’m just saying let’s be real about what we are experiencing on this 21 square mile island. It’s not going away!!!!

  26. Where do I "BUY BDA" says:

Maybe a good step to take for most of these out of the way (not in the city) types of shops (especially jewelry) is to install door buzzers that the clerk has to hit before anyone enters the store. It might help. Cameras also help but are pointless when they are installed in the ceiling to take a shot at the top of someones head.

To the store clerk – Go out – have a stiff drink and try not to let this shake you up too much. A very unfortunate and frightening experience you must have went through. I feel for you.

  27. Petra says:

    So sad :(

I hope the store clerk is OK, I can’t imagine going through something like this. God bless to the owners and the clerk

All of you “ZOMBIES”(bodies with out brains)that feel you have a right to terrorize your bermudian colleagues are the ones to cause the OBA PLP UBP whoever they are to implement these harsh indignities to your everyday life styles…Once this Martial Law gets in place expect deaths on a regular…all of you that have access to firearms and are famous for using them on unarmed civilians will die in their first attempt to defy The New World Order…killing these gunman will change the ones that have a couple of normal brain cells floating around under their hair…It’s time for change …Those of you who know who is doing these terrorist acts it’s YOU that hold the ball in your court to prevent such drastic changes that NO ONE wants….try voting with your ears and not your eyes…the true scales of justice….if not trust me …vigilante groups will rise to the occasion…The late Great Bob Marley told you many years ago …”Soooo Much Trouble in this World”… If u wanna win this election guys Legalize Marijuana and watch things return to normality..Believe It or Not.
