Over 2,500 Free Books Distributed At Festival

December 12, 2012

Over 2,500 free books were distributed at last Saturday’s Children’s Reading Festival [CRF] held in Victoria Park by the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Bermuda Alumnae Chapter. From newborns to Primary 6 students, each child received a free book with complimentary activities and refreshments.

In its 13th year, the CRF is the Sorority’s signature event that falls under their Educational Development Programme. Nina Jacobs, event Chair, said, “The objective of this event is to encourage literacy and foster a love of reading in every child primarily because literacy is the foundation for a solid education but also because, as Dr. Seuss says ‘The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go’.

“As a small country, we must continue to address the issue of literacy in our schools, homes and communities, never forgetting that a lifelong bond to books is made not only through instruction, but through the personal connections we make to the experience of reading.”

At the festival, children and parents alike enjoyed literary activities such as an hourly story time, arts and craft center, educational games center, fun castles, book signings from local authors and free refreshments of popcorn and juice. The new 2012 Winter Wonderland theme incorporated a special visit from Santa and Sandy’s Middle School Drumline.

Chapter President, Roxanne Christopher, added, “In today’s video game and television society, it is critical that we remind children and parents that reading is vital to the future success of our community and economy. The CRF continues to prepare and motivate children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to children and families in Bermuda.”

Ms Christopher continued: “We’d like to especially thank our sponsors, The Argus Group, Ultimate Imaging Ltd., Overnight Construction, John and Alice Carr, Funtyme Entertainment, Spa Water, Prophecy Hi Power, Bermuda Economic Development Corporation and The Royal Gazette. Obtaining the funding to support this event proved to be most challenging this year and we are elated that our community service event continued.”

To the sorority, great job once again this year with all your affords. To the sponsors (that which we know is hard to obtain in our current economical environment) thanks for lending your support to truly a worthy event.
