Seven Bermudians Jailed In England In 2012

January 17, 2013

According to the transcript of yesterday’s [Jan 16]  Westminster debate, there were seven Bermudians incarcerated in England and Wales last year. This is a jump from 2011, when records indicate there was only one Bermudian jailed.

UK MP Jeremy Wright provided statistics which indicated the amount of foreign nationals as of 30 June of each year in prisons located in England and Wales.

In 2008 there were 3 Bermudians jailed in England and Wales, in 2009 there were 5, in 2010 there were 2, there was only one in 2011, and there were 7 in 2012. There was no information released on what the individuals were jailed for, or how long they were jailed for.

The statistics for all foreign nationals were released, and indicated there were a total of 10,861 foreign nationals jailed in English and Welsh prisons.

In 2012 there were two Caymanians jailed, five Bahamians, 36 Barbadians, and Jamaica had one of the highest number of all nations worldwide with 900 of their nationals jailed.

The transcript noted these figures “have been drawn from administrative IT systems which, as with any large scale recording system, are subject to possible errors with data entry and processing.”

  1. Six Bermudians Jailed In UK As Of Dec. 31 2012 | Bernews.com | February 11, 2013
  1. Amazed says:

I am surprised that they are reporting Bermudians as foreign nationals given many hold British passports.

    • DarkSideOfTheMoon says:

It keeps a level of xenophobia going in case they need public support to revoke said passports in the future.

    • swing voter says:

never in 1 million years will OBTs be considered equal……. never…..I remember a guy from Liverpool some time ago was very insistant that white bermudians are not really white…..jeeez racism, class-ism, or just superior-lism at its worst. If they classify the Irish, Welsh, Scots, and Channel Islanders as inferior, what bloody chance do you lot have (black, white, and all shades inbetween)

      • Union Member says:

        good point swing voter

      • US National says:

There’s a clear distinction between “nationality” and “citizenship”. Though we may be British citizens we are Bermudian nationals. Citizenshipis acquired when one is accepted into a country’s political framework, were as the nationality of an individual is usually determined by their place of birth.

      • Clive Spate says:

Them cheeky Scousers (a guy from a city with a population of about 0.5 million!!)

I think you’ll find the Irish, Welsh, Scots etc. (including the English) are proud to call themselves such.
Just in case you’re unaware the Republic of Ireland is not part of Britain and are proud not to be too.

One final thing, Bermudian’s have all the rights of a British citizen in Britain (and Europe). Is the same true in reverse????

What ism would you call that?

    • The Cormorant says:

Just like us Brits who have been here forever are Onions, eh? You gotta give to take my friend.

  2. East Ender says:

    Very true @swing voter !!

  3. joe says:

Maybe these ‘Bermudians’ were simply individuals who hold Bermuda passports without the natural right of British nationality. There are different categories which, in fact, have nothing to do with race.

    • swing voter says:

Historically When it comes to the UK and most western european nations that owned overseas colonies and territories, everything has to do with race, class, and status. Why is ‘rule Britainia’ considered the unofficial national song?

  4. Kim Smith says:

They say that if all you have is a hammer, you see everything as a nail! It amazes me how many people go through life jumping up on a soap box at just about any opportunity. Unfortunately we then have to put up with their generalisations and exaggerations on public comment sites like this.

    • swing voter says:

Kim, you are one of the few liberals from that side of the pond, but I’ve been around the block a few times, my generalisations pretty much sum up the true picture. The UK has been over-run by people from the colonies and territories and the reaction has been openly xenophobic. Just ask the hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong citizens who thought the UK would welcome them with open arms when that territory was handed back to China

    • Clive Spate says:

Whereas Bermuda’s labour party is every bit as right wing, if not more so, than the Tories!!

  5. Bobmarlin says:

Bet they wish they were in the Westgate Hotel!

  6. Pastor Syl Hayward says:

It seems to me that the only reason these incarcerated persons were able to be identified as Bermudian was likely because they held Bermuda passports as ID.
If they had British passports, they would not have been identified as a national of any other countty, since the British passport does not contain any indicators of any other citizenship.

I wish they had released the names of the people who are incarcerated as many of us have relatives who have moved to England.

    • DarkSideOfTheMoon says:

The British passport has place of birth. Mine says Paget, Bermuda…

      • Think What You Want... says:

Thank you very much “DarkSideOfTheMoon”…….I am in possession of a EU UK passport and my place of birth is clearly stated as Paget, Bermuda…Don’t think for a moment that the Immigration department in the UK & Wales aren’t aware of who exactly the Bermudians are and who is residing there, with or without the EU or Bermuda registered passport. Lets just hope that somehow the UK and Bermuda remain as they are, because when there is no longer a relationship the murders in Bermuda will escalate beyond understanding…

  7. US Observer in Pink Sand says:

As reported: “Jamaica had one of the highest number of all nations worldwide with 900 of their nationals jailed.” Hmmm. I wonder how many of their nationals are in Bermuda?

    • Free says:

      Too many.

      • Sent says:

Too many illusions. People are people… Know that.

        • Times Crossword, 5 down says:

I know that stats don’t lie. Good people and bad people in Jamaica, but as a percentage, more bad than in most places.

          • Free says:

            Thank you!

          • Sent says:

I understand the murder rate is very high in JA, but should Jamaican nationals be marginalized because of this?

            • Ossie Ardiles says:

The British police has something called Operation Trident. It is a massive rearguard against Yardie gangs, largely in North West London. British tax payers pay for this, and there are major areas which are no-go zones. You reap what you sew I’m afraid, and Jamaican culture has a real issue with aggression and machismo. The same thing is happening here.

  8. James Rego says:

It’s been reported in the local media where gangsters who have been relocated to the U.K for their own safety, have gotten into trouble with the law there. That being the case, some probably are in prison. All around, it doesn’t bode well for future migrants.

  9. Future says:

And to think we used to export mainly onions and lilies….now we export….
