Upcoming: Free Health Talk On HPV Vaccines

There will be a free Public Health Talk on Wednesday, January 23 at 5.45pm at the Bermuda Cancer and Health Center on Point Finger Road in Paget. Health education officer Rhonda Smith-Simmons will discuss the importance of maintaining childhood vaccinations and the diseases prevented by the HPV vaccine for both boys and girls.     Great topic, but even though I’m part of the target audience I probaboy won’t make it. Will vaccines be offered at the event? This would actually give me more reason to come. If a movie/HW help was offered to babysit my son i’d make a more conscious effort to attend!

    Research shows exposure to HPV happens typically earlier than age 21 which is why they target this to a younger age group. For cancer from HPV, most cases manifest about 20 years after exposure and the majority are first detected in adults between the ages of 38-41.

    This is why they like to target the vaccine prior to the onset of sexual activity and not typically to adults over the age of 26. The infection rate of HPV is around 50% of all adults which makes it the most prevalent STI out there.
