Butterfield To Sponsor Natwest Island Games

July 12, 2013

Butterfield Group, which includes Bermuda-based The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited and subsidiaries Butterfield Bank [Cayman] Limited and Butterfield Bank [Guernsey] Limited, is a proud sponsor of the 2013 NatWest Island Games being held in Bermuda from July 13 to July 19, 2013.

Butterfield will be highly visible as one of the larger local sponsors, in conjunction with NatWest, the lead international sponsor, at the National Stadium complex, which encompasses the National Aquatic Centre and the North Field. Butterfield employee volunteers will be present at events being held at the National Stadium complex, including Athletics, Swimming, Football and Beach Volleyball, and at other venues across the island.

Butterfield will additionally host a VIP reception for international representatives and officials attending the Games and is providing advertising support to encourage local attendance at the various sporting events.

Butterfield in Guernsey has provided bursaries to six of their local athletes to assist them with the costs of travelling to and competing in the Bermuda Games. Bursary recipients are: Luke Winberg [Triathlon]; Courtney Butcher [Swimming]; Sam Wallbridge [400 m hurdles]; Zoe Fitch [javelin]; Andy Bridgman [Sailing] and Johanna Asplund [Sailing].

Butterfield in Cayman has a history of supporting the Cayman Islands’ Island Games teams, and this year is, once again, outfitting the Cayman Islands’ 145 athletes with their official track suits for the Games.

Brendan McDonagh, Butterfield’s Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, said, “Butterfield is proud to sponsor Bermuda’s first Island Games and help welcome more than 2,000 participants to the island. This is a high profile sports event; one that is being received enthusiastically by the local community and which will increase Bermuda’s visibility internationally, particularly among audiences in the 24 islands that are participating. Butterfield was established in Bermuda and has served this community for 155 years, so we’re pleased to be able to help showcase the world-class sports venues and natural beauty that Bermuda has to offer.”

Mr. McDonagh continued, “Much of Butterfield’s growth and success over the last forty years has been driven by our international operations, in particular our large banking and trust operations in Cayman and Guernsey. The 2013 NatWest Island Games is a unique celebration of sport that gives elite athletes from those communities the opportunity to compete internationally in a friendly atmosphere. For Butterfield, it’s an opportunity to help bring together and support athletes from our largest jurisdictions at one event.”

The NatWest Island Games Bermuda 2013 will feature athletes from 24 islands competing in 14 sports. Bermuda will field some 300 athletes, whilst Guernsey will send 218 and Cayman 145.
