Football: Bermuda Women Defeat Trinidad 1-0
[Updated: Bermuda win their second consecutive game, defeating Trinidad 1-0 and going through to the semi-finals]
The Bermuda Women’s U17 National Football Team are taking on Trinidad and Tobago this evening [Sept 23] in Haiti, and as of now they are leading 1-0.
Bermuda is competing in the final round of the Caribbean Football Union U17 Women’s Regional World Cup Qualifying Tournament, and has been drawn in Group B alongside the Dominican Republic, Trinidad & Tobago, and Grenada.
Bermuda defeated the Dominican Republic 3-1 in their opening group match, while Trinidad & Tobago defeated Grenada 10-0 in their opening match. Trinidad & Tobago currently top the group on superior goal difference over Bermuda.
Bermuda’s starting lineup is: Micah Pond, Taznae Fubler, K’sheala Burch-Waldron, Sideya Dill, Nasaj Burgess, Deshae Darrell, Kali Lespere, Zahra Gibbons, Aaliyah Nolan, Eva Frazzoni, and Tieyah Durham.
Update 8.54pm: Bermuda open the second half on the offensive. Aaliyah Nolan sends a free kick over the top, and minutes later she comes back and opens the scoring for Bermuda, who take a 1-0 lead.
Update 9.21pm: The match is over, with Bermuda making it two wins a row, defeating Trinidad 1-0.
Update 9.52pm: Video of the post game interview, with Bermuda’s captain Kali Lespere and coach Aaron Denkins.
Update 11.33pm: Match report from the CFU Director Of Competition:
Bermuda advance from Group B
Bermuda are through to the semifinals of the 2013 CFU Women’s Under 17 Cup currently being played in Haiti by virtue of a hard fought 1-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago.
A single moment of brilliance from Aaliyah Nolan in the 50th minute was all it took for Bermuda to breathe a sigh of relief and prepare for the next round; however they still have one more game to play against Grenada on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Nolan was the recipient of a lovely pass from Eva Frazzoni which landed inside the 18 yard box and she crushed the ball past a diving Nicolette Craig in the Trinidadian goal.
Trinidad’s five goal heroine of the previous game, Zoe Swift, was completely shut out by Bermuda’s defence who came with a game plan to limit the amount of space she had to operate with, and reduce her touches; a plan which worked to perfection on the evening.
Coach of Bermuda, Aaron Denkins, was elated with the win and said his girls worked hard for the victory. “Trinidad is always a good team to play against and this was a good win as we look to move forward,” said Denkins.
Trinidad and Tobago control their own destiny for the remainder of the competition, a win against the Dominican Republic on Wednesday evening will assure them of a semifinal appearance; a loss would be devastating if Grenada defeats Bermuda in the 4 p.m. match.
