Amy Terceira Launches “Dog Gone Good”

September 24, 2013

941994Bermudian Amy Terceira has returned to the island and launched Dog Gone Good, a mobile full service dog grooming and training business.

The training side of Dog Gone Good uses positive reinforcement, a force-free method based on science. Clients have the option of one-on-one training sessions or training without the owner present, in which case the owner will be shown what their dog has learned and how to maintain it.

Ms Terceira said, “Through positive reinforcement training you are more likely to keep the desired behaviours as opposed to utilizing aversives [something the dog does not like]. This is scientifically proven and makes sense because the dog enjoys the training and feels safe. It is the same idea as if someone compliments your outfit, you are more likely to wear it again. To get behaviours through force is possible but it is dangerous, cruel and poisons your relationship with your dog. Aggression begets aggression.”

Dog Gone Good specializes in the following areas of training: [1] Basic obedience training; [2] Puppy training; [3] Introducing a new dog to your home; [4] Introducing the family dog to a new baby; [5] Behaviour modification [separation anxiety, resource guarding, aggression/fear, biting, excessive barking, etc.]; [6] Teaching children over the age of 5 to train the family dog; [7] Nutrition evaluation [diet often affects behaviour and the right diet can lower vet bills]; and [8] Socialisation through use of social groups and training.

Ms Terceira continued, “ I think dog behaviour is widely misunderstood and I would like to help people and dogs live in harmony together. It should not be about a fight for top position, but instead people must take the time to think dog and to teach their dogs the behaviors that they want to see.

“Dogs cannot read our minds and contrary to popular belief, they are not trying to please us, they do things that are natural for them, fun, and produce rewards. I think savvy dog owners have become uncomfortable and frustrated by the combative approach and want an alternative that has a better success rate long term and that builds a great relationship between them and their dog,” said Amy.

In addition to training, mobile grooming services include: [1] bathing; [2] high velocity drying; [3] breed standard and pet trims; [4] hand stripping and [5] nail and ear care.

Ms Terceira achieved her City & Guild Level 3 dog stylist qualification in London and participated in dog training and behaviour courses with Sarah Whitehead of the Clever Dog Company. She then went on to launch Hot Dogs Toilettage in Paris, France that offered mobile grooming and positive reinforcement training in both French and English.

“After 4 years, I decided it was time to come home to Bermuda and offer the island’s dogs and their owners my services,” said Ms Terceira.

As an added bonus for clients, Dog Gone Good has initiated a referral discount programme. Clients can save up to 15% on grooming services for their dogs.

Ms Terceira is currently continuing her education in the field of dog training and behaviour with world-renowned dog trainer, Jean Donaldson, at The Academy for Dog Trainers.

“Being enrolled at The Academy greatly benefits my clients, as I now have access to numerous certified dog trainers to help consult on behaviour cases. This is an invaluable bonus of being part of the programme,” said Ms Terceira.
