“Big, Brave, Bold Bermuda” Art Mural For Sale

December 19, 2013

Looking for a last minute Christmas gift? The current Artist in Residence at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda art has a 15 foot mural which he hopes to sell before he leaves the island on December 29.

Elliot Wilson stated: “The Big, Brave, Bold Bermuda Mural was an idea that came to me when I thought about how I could combine my stay here with getting involved in the community. A community project would potentially allow me to leave the island in three month’s time with a sense of affecting the long term understanding of art in the minds of the children I worked with.”

The mural is a composite drawing of Bermuda which Mr Wilson created and, over the course of two months, many Bermudian school children from the age of four and up came and stuck colourful pieces of material to add colour and life to the mural.

The mural measures 15 feet x 4 feet, and is priced at $5,000.

About working with the school children, Mr Wilson had this to say: “The sessions working on this mural with the children have been full of laughter and interest, and we’ve held long discussions about the subject of art, and how it can be fun and interactive as well as introspective. You can’t say that happens with children too often, so I got lucky!”

Not only did local school children help complete the mural, but he also had invaluable help from Nancy Frith, who sourced and cut all the material used in the mural.

“I got in touch with the ex-President of the Bermuda Quilting Guild, Nancy Frith. I happened upon an incredibly organised and capable person in Nancy. Her experience regarding types of material to use and where to source them was invaluable,” said Mr Wilson.

Mr Wilson said he would also like to thank the Education Coordinator at Masterworks, Krystle Paulino, who organised the children’s sessions at Masterworks, as half of the material application work was done there.

The other half of the application was done at the studio in St. George’s by Mr Wilson and his fiancée. Particular thanks is also due to St. George’s primary school and Warwick Academy for taking the time to work on the project.

He also said he is very grateful to members of the community and friends who organised their children and themselves to come in and work on the mural.
