Ministry Sponsors Family Mediation Workshop

ATT25021In keeping with a Throne Speech initiative, a family mediation workshop was coordinated last week by the Judiciary with the support of the Ministry of Community, Culture and Sports.

Minister of Community, Culture and Sports R. Wayne Scott, attended the opening session along with The Chief Justice, Ian Kawaley; Justice Norma Wade-Miller and Master Calum MacLeod, Superior Court of Justice Ottawa, Canada who conducted the two-day workshop.

Minister Scott noted, “The timing of this workshop falls in line with the co-parenting legislation that we introduced in the Throne Speech.”

He added, “We are pleased to support this workshop organised by the Court as they work to effectively implement a more formalized technique of family mediation to resolve disputes involving children and their families.”

Justice Wade Miller thanked participants, who represented the legal community, government agencies and charitable organizations, for attending the conference. She explained, “The conference was organised to provide an opportunity for us to be better equipped with this vital tool to administer justice in Bermuda.”

    Mediation sounds good in theory but I do not think it will work unless both parties care more about the needs of the child then they the parents own selfish need to control one another. I have been in mediation and the mother agreed while there but as soon as we left she went against what was agreed and we eventually had to go before a judge. Canada is not the best of places to model after in my respectful opinion.
