Tourism Authority Release March 2014 Statistics

April 25, 2014

The Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] released statistics for March 2014, which indicate that air visitor arrivals for March were down 1.92%, while room nights booked for March were up 1.88%.

“We consider the increase in room nights during a period of decreased arrivals to be an accomplishment, as it directly equates to visitors staying longer and spending more at local hotels,” said BTA CEO Bill Hanbury.

“It is also important to note that the increase in airline capacity shows confidence that demand for Bermuda and performance in the future will increase.”

BTA Statistics: Monthly Hotel through end of March:

  • Hotel room nights for March were projected to be down 4.1% at the end of Feb
  • Room nights booked for March were up 1.88% vs. 2013 – from 22,985 to 23,416
  • Year to date room nights are up 1.01% from 52,147 to 52,672
  • Hotel average daily rates year to date continue to increase, up 3% over last year
  • Revenue per available room is up 7.2% vs. 2013
  • Group room nights on the books for the next 12 months are up 12.5% vs. last year
  • The next 12 months “look promising” with 7.5% more room nights on the books vs. same time in 2013

Lets hope we have a huge summer!

  3. flikel says:

Can the increase in room nights booked, despite the decrease in air arrivals, be attributed to more locals staying in the hotels?

The hotels did run several promotions geared toward Bermuda residents, so the statement “it directly equates to visitors staying longer and spending more at local hotels” may not necessarily be true.

    • Not clear says:

The increase in room nights booked v number of arrivals could also be due to longer stays. I don’t see any way to determine that split.

  4. Triangle Drifter says:

Considering the terrible weather on the East Coast which resulted in a number of no fly days, any increase no matter how the hotels got it, should be appreciated.

We can only wonder how much better the numbers would have been had the East Coast had a normal winter.

    • Yea right says:

Triangle you’re so stupid you’ll be saying the same thing next year when the loads are down. Another oba troll defending the Hoods.

    • mixitup says:

I would think that the terrible winter on the east coast would lead to a flood of people wanting a break from it and coming to bermuda. And good weather keeping them there?

  5. North West says:

Nobody visiting this dry and boring place!

    • Mike Hind says:

Well, that’s not QUITE true, is it…

if it were, the numbers would be at zero.

      But they’re not.

      So… yeah.

    • BDA diva says:

North West – you would do well to remember that “boring” is an EXTREMELY subjective term. Just because you find Bermuda boring, doesn’t mean it is necessarily so! After all, MANY New Yorkers find Manhattan to be “boring” – simply because it is their “backyard” which is there for them all the time.

$5 million more of taxpayer money just thrown away by our leaders.
That’s what PLP paid Fuseideas for and OBA kept it on – that tacky and hideous So Much More Maine ripoff campaign. I still have nightmares about the white granny bathing suit and fake St George’s Water St set. All it was was ‘so much more’ declines in tourism numbers since August 2012.
Had we real any leaders we would have approved a casino and spent the money on education of Bermudians
