Tropical Storm Bertha Is A “Potential Threat”

August 3, 2014

Tropical Storm Bertha — the second named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season — is a “potential threat to Bermuda” the Bermuda Weather Service said today [Aug 3].

The BWS said the closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs is forecast to be 299 nautical miles to the north-west at 6.00pm on Tuesday, August 5th.

In the forecast discussion, BWS forecaster Robert Howlett said: “TS Bertha will make its closest approach late Tuesday night, but current NHC forecast keeps the eye roughly 300 miles to our NW. This forecast has been fairly consistent, and models have become more aligned.

“GFS has consistently shown the TS closer to the area, with only a minor increase in wind speed. As with any tropical system that is forecast to pass near the island, a close watch will be kept on the progression of Bertha. No watches/warnings/advisories are expected at this time.”

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm is carrying maximum sustained winds near 45 mph [75 km/h] with higher gusts, with some strengthening forecast during the next 48 hours.

nothing to worry about………..and then we work up to Hurricane Emily…one of the worst butt kickins we’ve had and it was mostly because we were unprepared an complacent because we had not been hit hard in so long. BELCO and private land owners had not made trimming trees a priority and most of us were not worried at all. And then boom, hurricane and tornados! I can remember a boat inside what was previously a room on the second or third floor of Sonesta Beach Hotel.

      Never fool with mother nature!

The boat in Sonesta was hurricane Fabian. I agree always be prepared but to panic is a thousand times worse.
