NZ Minister: “Bermuda Angle A Lot Tougher”

December 1, 2014

The New Zealand Government says it will be harder to justify funding of Team New Zealand’s next America’s Cup bid if Bermuda hosts the regatta, multiple New Zealand media outlets are reporting.

“The reality is it’s got to do something really good for New Zealand and New Zealand exporters,” Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce Joyce told Firstline.

“The west coast of the US has been great for us. San Francisco was great, San Diego’s been great in the past, so we can make that work. But the Bermuda angle I’ve got to say is a lot tougher.

Mr Joyce said he had canvassed the relevant agencies such as New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and Tourism New Zealand “and they were unambiguously more interested in the West Coast of the US than Bermuda”.

The government has supported previous TNZ campaigns, including $36NZ million for the failed bid at San Francisco last year and a further $5NZ million afterwards to retain key staff.

The venue for the 2017 America’s Cup, will be either San Diego or Bermuda, and while reports strongly suggest Bermuda will be given the nod, the decision is due to be officially announced tomorrow [Dec 2].

Citing an unnamed person “with knowledge of the situation”, the Associated Press reported that Bermuda has been picked over San Diego, while a report from the San Diego press quoted San Diego Tourism Authority CEO Joe Terzi as confirming that Bermuda has been selected.

Tell NZ not to just fixate on Bermuda. The angle really is the exposure to the European Television market. Surely NZ can see the value of millions of European viewers seeing their sponsorship on those boats. Anyway all will be revealed tomorrow.

Agree with Lois. seems they are missing the point – and it is a point that Bda must shout about, loudly.

New Zealand need to check themselves…. Didn’t Bermuda pay billions to cover the losses from the earthquakes a few years back.

If Bermuda is not important to New Zealand, then send all that money back.

  4. Triangle Drifter says:

So NZ exporters want something in return from Bermuda do they? How about those 2 very expensive, very fast ferrys we bought not too long ago? How about all of that NZ meat & butter that we have been buying forever?

    Your missing the point…

Here is the opportunity to market directing to NZ. They are quite right, who are we? What do we have to offer? What mutual interests can we build on? How can Bermuda better showcase itself to NZ? And what can NZ do for us?

NZ is 21 hours ahead of California, therefore their time zone is compatible with California, and their sponsors can maximise their exposure in the West Coast market and vice versa.

It is obvious that NZ relies upon the import/export trade between the country (NZ) and this US state (CA).

In other words, NZ offsets their huge expenses with sponsors who seek value for money.

Seriously, what can we market to them and vice versa, other than our negative lip-service?

The Muld Cup is only half full, we need to win over our critics, not return verbal fire.
