UN International Day: Persons With Disabilities

December 2, 2014

The National Office for Seniors and the Physically Challenged [NOSPC] said they would like to advise the public that Wednesday [Dec 3] is United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The theme this year is Sustainable Development: The Promise of Technology, and this year the International Day of Persons with Disabilities will focus on the role of technology in:

  • Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Responses
  • Creating Enabling Working Environments
  • Disability-Inclusive Sustainable Development Goals

To recognize the day, NOSPC is inviting members of the public to visit the Lower Level of the Washington Mall from 11am until 2pm on Wednesday December 3rd where a booth will be set up promoting technology and, in particular, how persons with disabilities are interacting with technology.

NOSPC is partnering with the Department of E-Commerce to provide cyber tips for seniors; iClick to demonstrate the uses and functions of the iPad; and Opportunity Workshop to display their Christmas Crafts.

Local runner Ryan Gibbons will also be on-hand at the booth to talk about his new prosthetic leg. The Flex-Run with Nike Sole was an unexpected gift from A Step Ahead Prosthetics, the US company that built his artificial limb after his leg was amputated following in a road accident.

Minister of Health, Seniors and Environment  Jeanne Atherden said, I would encourage members of the public – those both with and without disabilities – to stop by the Lower Level of the Washington Mall from 11am until 2pm on Wednesday [Dec 3] to see the technological gadgets that will be on display. It is a chance for people to familiarize themselves with technology which could potentially enrich their lives.

“Also, I am particularly excited to have the opportunity to purchase some of the Christmas Crafts produced by the clients of the Opportunity Workshop which I saw when I visited them earlier this month.”

Other participating organizations include Medical House, Beacon House, and the Bermuda Society for the Blind.

UN International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

I thought it was mentioned in the SAGE commission that these proclamation Day’s of whatever were inefficient use of Bermuda taxpayers’ money with very little value in return.
