About the ongoing work to prepare the island, Sir Russell said, “There’s more progress than what I expected, which is a good thing. I certainly have no doubt that the island will get the facilities ready on time and, in many ways, over-deliver.

“I was impressed by the work that has already been done,” added Sir Russell. “Of course it’s only the start of the process. There’s a tremendous amount that will be done and in many ways, that’s the exciting part.”

42-minute video of the full America’s Cup press conference today:

  1. Sky Pilot says:

Bermudians are expecting far too much out of this event,it is the biggest hype since Christmas.

    • Truth is killin' me... says:

      Go fly away dreamer!

    • Sky Pilot says:

the ordinary Bermudian is not going to get a dam thing out of this event…….you know it and I know it.

  2. Balanced. says:

@sky pilot – this next 2 years is going to be a great time to be in Bermuda – and as a legacy if not sabotaged.

  3. Oh,I see now says:

Bermudians are expecting far too much out of this event,it is the biggest hype since Christmas.

I would rather have this hype as opposed to no hype at all,no influx of fresh capital, and no opportunity for employment. Please ask a person out of work and under bills their opinion on the matter and see if they believe the hype.

  4. Oh,I see now says:

How can some of my countrymen downplay this event when their is no alternative, second choice or plan B in our immediate future.Basically what you are saying is you would rather not eat because it will only be for a short while…….REALLY heh heh.

  5. dream big says:

Id like to see a breakdown of who will benefit from this event so far all I can see is:

    - Restaraunt/store owners in dockyard
    - People renting houses
    - People renting boats for boat tours

I doubt the average Joe will be able to sell any america’s cup merchandise.

    • serengeti says:

So presumably even in your little world the beneficiaries would include:
      - waiters, waitresses, cooks, cleaners, in those restaurants.
      - people who work at companies that supply food and other supplies to those restaurants
      - taxi drivers who bring customers to and from those restaurants
      - people who maintain the rented houses, like painters, plumbers, landscapers.
Plenty of ‘average Joes’ who will be benefitting.

      • dream big says:

Thanks for attempting to answer my question.. but

        - How many chefs/waiters/cleaners? you think it’l be more than 100? This is their big Jackpot right?
Will they open new restaurants? if so, what happens when the event ends and the influx of customers goes away?
        - I left out taxi drivers, thanks.
        - People who maintain the houses? Please. it wont be benefiting them any more than if a regular Bermudian were to rent the house.

Point being, Those who have assets like houses and boats will be in a far better position to benefit/exploit this event for profit. While average Joe might get a scrap here and there… oh yea what do you call it? “trickle down”?

As sarcastic or cynical as I may come across, I’m seriously asking where we will see the cash injection that will make it worthwhile.
Do you think what you’ve written is worth the 77 million or whatever amount we’re putting into it?

        • Creamy says:

You come across as sarcastic and a bit thick. First, you list a very limited number of categories of people who will benefit. When a few examples are pointed out how the employment opportunities obviously broaden out to other people, you give a sarcastic answer.
If you’re just going to be a prick about it it’s not really worth discussing, is it.
Carry on sitting on your effin wall and whining. In the meantime, a lot of people who want jobs will get them.

          • dream big says:

I listed those categories because thats all i could think of at the time (Open to anyone who can expand on it)…I actually have a great job and an ok side job, plus, I’ve helped to build more walls than I’ve sat on.
If you read my first post you’d notice that I didn’t get sarcastic until serengeti decided to belittle me. I’ll admit, it was uncalled for.

But all the immaturity aside. Don’t you agree that we should see some sort of plan as to where this injection of money will come from? I thanked serengeti for attempting to answer. But i still don’t see how that will equal the 100 million+ injection of money, nor do I see how that is worth 77 million.

Maybe I am a bit thick
