On Tuesday, May 19, the celebrations culminated with a playground beautification community service project at Shelly Bay Park and the presentation of two benches in honour of the Chartering Members of Sigma Xi Omega Chapter.
A spokesperson said, “On the campus of Howard University in 1908, Ethel Hedgeman gathered together with eight Negro college women to breathe into reality her dream of a support network for like minded women. From this small group of nine, the first Negro Greek-letter sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority materialized.
“Eighty-two years later, on May 19, 1990, this now worldwide sorority landed and took root in Bermuda with a group of nineteen Bermudian women. This year Sigma Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated celebrates twenty-five years of service to the people of Bermuda.”
