Bermudian Artist’s First Show At Masterworks

May 21, 2015

Charis Haynes 2“Eve” a ‘new age femininity art show’ by artist Charis Haynes will be displayed at Masterworks on Friday, May 22 from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

Ms. Haynes said, “The collection conveys the life circumstances women find themselves in and the emotions that we harbor. No matter the era or phase, all women tend to share the same issues. However, it’s not the issue that defines the woman, it’s how the woman reacts in a situation that defines her.

“I thought Eve was a fitting name for the display as it personifies femininity, being Eve was the first woman in humanity and it was her actions, in a moment of temptation, which defined the modern day predicaments we face as females.”

“I decided to host this show at this stage in my life simply because I thought it was time to step out on a limb and share with the world what I have to offer. I am finally liberated enough to have my art critiqued, praised and simply viewed; knowing that if I aroused some sort of emotion or provoking thought, I have done my job as an artist.”

Ms. Haynes also had wise words for aspiring artists, saying “Make time. I encourage anyone who considers pursuing their passion to make the time to cultivate it. I deliberately make time to practice my craft because it’s a gift God has given me and a form of mental escape.

“When I am in the middle of creating a piece, I lose the concept of time and my focus is one track. My mind steadies and I have that time to think, relax and express. In Proverbs 18:16 it says ‘a man’s gifts shall make room for him and bring him before great men,’and I am excited to see where my gift will take me.”

“Don’t doubt. As I don’t have any formal art training, I sometimes underestimate my abilities. Although I realize that there are many noteworthy artists who have been formally trained and have admirable techniques, I find that my concepts are what make me a unique artist.

“Art to me is the thought before the brush meets the canvas. The actual product is the medium of communication.”

“Find a mentor. Throughout the years, I have had several individuals influence my art form and passion. All of my art teachers have helped mold my skills. These include my very first art teacher, Ms. Barbara Dillas, at West End Primary School; Mr. Harvey at Spice Valley Middle School; Mrs. Capelo at Mount Saint Agnes High School; and ‘Mr. V’ at Bishops College School.

“As I have started to dedicate more time to my craft, Mr. Michael Walsh of Bermuda College has been a great mentor. These individuals whether they know it or not have all dropped valuable nuggets that encouraged me to embrace my artistic side.

“For that I am grateful and I truly thank God for each of them; and for every person God has put in my path to bring me to this point.”

Ms. Haynes attended Concordia University, where she obtained her Bachelors in Business Commerce in 2012. While studying abroad, Charis’s art was published in Bishops College Schools’ book – ‘Enscape’, which showcased some of the best art work produced by students. Her work was also published in the Canadian publication entitled ‘First Fruits’ [2007 edition].

Locally, Ms. Haynes has competed against some of Bermuda’s best artists in the Charman Prize Exhibition. She is currently the Team Leader for local and overseas claims in the Health Claims department at BF&M.
