A trip in July 2015 by Economic Development Minister Dr Grant Gibbons to Portsmouth, UK, for the America’s Cup World Series Event cost $2931.50, according to a recent listing on the Government’s travel webpage.

The trip took place from Friday, July 24th to Monday, July 27th, and the webpage listing said: “Dr. the Hon. E. “The visit served to outline all that will be required of Bermuda to host the event in Bermuda later this year. While in Portsmouth, Minister Gibbons met with representatives of the America’s Cup Event Authority, America’s Cup major sponsors, and the Mayors of Portsmouth and Gothenberg, Sweden, the other America’s Cup World Series Host cities.

“The event provided a unique opportunity to promote Bermuda as host for not only the America’s Cup World Series in October, but for the ultimate America’s Cup Finals, scheduled for Bermuda in June of 2017.

  1. Not exactly says:

No wonder the Minister is so slim. He only ate $33.14 worth of food in 4 days.

  2. RBYC member says:

So Minister Gibbons spent $33 on his meals in 4 days and the SpongeBob guy spent $600+ in 2 days.

Thank you Minister Gibbons. Oh and SpongeBob you need to eat your words “Money does not grow on trees”.

  3. Love Is It says:

    Fly him coach next time.

Come on – he is a Minister. In any other country, it would be a nonissue for such a figure to fly business or first class; in fact, it is to be expected. The OBA should be applauded for being so transparent with their expenses. Let’s not look to find faults and rather appreciate that Mr. Gibbons spent so little tax money on accomodation and meals.

These disclosures of travel expenses may be interesting FYI. However I can’t help but think that these tid bits of revelations under the guise of transparency are a trivial deflection away from the big stuff which the OBA do not so readily reveal. I’m more interested in the big stuff OBA. Let’s start from there. AC35 expenditures to date? Jobs created as a result? What has been spent so far on CCC airport project? What are the concession costs to date to businesses? And why hasn’t this Govt made an inquiry on the past PLP allegations regarding alleged missing money so we can put that all that to bed? And so much more. Now that would be real transparency if that is their mantra. Guess I’ll have to go the PATI route.
