New Website Supporting Same Sex Marriage

October 29, 2015

The discussion around same sex marriage continues, with a new website launching today [Oct 29] in support of it, with samelovebermuda.com saying that “same-sex couples want to marry for all the same reasons as their opposite-sex counterparts” which include “legal security, to publicly celebrate their commitment, to provide greater legal protection for their children, or simply because they are in love.”

The website was launched by Tony Brannon, who said, “The importance of Human Rights for all is an absolute must. To deny same love to same sex couples who ask to be married cannot continue.

“From the United Nations to the International Organization for Human Rights, it is time for Bermuda to join other nations and do the right thing.

“The website is simple and to the point. I am very proud of my website designer who has contributed her time and love to the fight for equality.

“The fight for civil rights, the fight for same rights for women were all battles for freedom. Sadly some people that fought for rights mentioned above are the very people denying same sex couples their right to marry in Bermuda.

“Sadly, religion is used by some to keep this injustice in place,” added Mr Brannon.

The website follows after a petition was started calling for same sex marriage to be legalized, another petition was started opposing same sex marriage, and public information sessions pertaining to same sex marriage were held.

In June of this year the U.S. Supreme Court legalised same sex marriage throughout the USA, and according to Time Magazine other countries that have also legalised same sex marriage include the Netherlands [2000], Belgium [2003], Canada [2005] , Spain [2005], South Africa [2006], Norway [2009], Sweden [2009], Argentina [2010], Iceland [2010], Portugal [2010], Denmark [2012], Brazil [2013], England and Wales [2013], France [2013], New Zealand [2013], Uruguay [2013], Luxembourg [2014], Scotland [2014], Finland [signed 2015, effective 2017], and Ireland [2015].

  1. Let the law pass and it still won’t change God’s law, People will be people the world over, and we will never agree on every issue, but one thing is for sure, we will all stand in the seat of Judgement at the end of this life, to be judge by the one who created us all.

My opinion on same sex marriage don’t change, when the gay community fought during the stubb’s bill, they made it quite clear they were not going to fight for the right to be married, and I said it then and I will continue to say it, that their agenda is no different then the agenda in the United States, the next thing they want to cram down our throats, is the alternative lifestyle to be taught in our education system to children in primary school and right through to senior school.

I say to the same sex couples, live your life and go ahead and get married, it don’t matter to me, I will treat you just a s I always have as a human being, and love you for who you are as a person, but will never accept the lifestyle as being normal.

Some may not be bold to say it, but this is not about religion, this is far more then religion can ever produce, the day two men or two women can physically make a child the way God designed it to be, then i may consider if my belief is in error, but until then I am convinced that the bible is right, and in the sight of the creator, it is still an abomination.

    • Unbelievable says:

It’s not about procreating. It’s about BEING WITH SOMEONE YOU LOVE!!!!

It really isn’t that hard to understand. Jesus. Yes…Jesus!

      • Vulcan Trash Cleaner says:

this jesus you speak of has got nothing to do with this!

        • Onion Juuice says:

But us straight people will procreate for you and you can adopt to make a complete FAMILY.

          • Varied says:

There are more than a few kids out there who could use a loving family to raise them right now.

            • Onion juice says:

Just hope and pray they dont get it twisted.

              • Mike Hind says:

Yeah. That would suck. Getting it twisted by continuine to deny people rights and privileges would be awful!

              • Build a Better Bermuda says:

Yes, because there is so many children from gay couples out there who have been twisted from bad or neglected parenting, causing them to swing toward a life of crime and gang life… oh wait

          • navin johnson says:

Yes we will adopt the children you walk away from….why is it the those against same sex marriage all rely on bible thumping?

          • Curious says:

you mean some of us straight people will procreate and abandon or neglect our children, and now members of the LGBT community can legally adopt and care for them, right?

          • Strike fund says:

If you straight people stopped having gay babies there wouldn’t be an issue.

      • CHEER UP says:

I’m not gay no more… I am DELIVERED!!! I don’t like mens no more.

      • San George says:

It will have to be hard – but it will not stay hard; time will take care of that. It is really about choice. Only human beings can choose to steal, kill, lie, cheat, covet, pro-create, or not pro-create. All other creatures act on instict. We have choice. How will you choose?

    • Varied says:

But the discussion isn’t about procreation at all. Why is that even mentioned as a reason to allow or bar marriages?

    • One love says:

“we will all stand in the seat of judgment”
Surely those that stand in a seat will fail.

    • Mike Hind says:

No, this is ONLY about religion.

Hide behind the lie of procreation, but it is ONLY about religious privilege and forcing it on others.
You want to talk “cramming down our throats”, it is YOUR side, the religious side, that is cramming their views down other people’s throats, not the other way around.

Oh, and you can’t say “this is not about religion” and then say “the way God designed it to be”. It’s unfair and dishonest.

You can believe what you want. No one is stopping you. What you can’t do is force other people to follow the rules of that belief, and ESPECIALLY not using lies and dishonesty. Come on. Do better.

    • blackseal says:

but god does not exist and the bible is just a fictional story like harry potter

      • Onion Juuice says:

According to the teachings of Ancient Kemet, male and female was the structure of the family, thousands of years before a bible or Jesus was thought of.

        • Mike Hind says:

And this has what to do with the current topic?

Are we all to be forced to follow the teachings of Ancient Kemet?

          • Onion juice says:

No, but its healthy to emulate the structure of the original source.

            • Mike Hind says:

The original source of what? Religion?
No, it’s not. That’s the entire point of this whole discussion.

Also, didn’t they own slaves and stuff back then?

              • Nightlilly says:

Definitely owned slaves. Definitely treated women horribly.

          • Tough Love says:

No, go do what you want. Sleep with your sister because she’s pretty. Break in your daughter because you want to, go head! Where does it stop? It doesn’t.

        • Nightlilly says:

There are lots of family structures in ancient religions – not all of them I want to emulate.

Loooots of incest. Like, LOTS. Also, gender switching and bestiality.

      • San George says:

God is revealed in nature. Seeds go into the ground, die and live again. Rainbows reveal the earth will never be destroyed by water again – next time fire. We come from spirit, live in water, breathe air and return back to spirit. Harry can’t be greater than the writer.

    • We the People (1st!!) says:

      I agree with you.

I also agree with this comment someone made on another blog with sums it up perfectly.

“There is no equivalency between true traditional marriage and homosexual relationships. The first, by its nature, is life-giving and authentic in its relational potentials of husband and wife, mother and father and child. The second is sterile and abuses the nature of the relationship between maleness and femaleness as such, as well as the rights of children in relation to their natural parents. Reason in this regard would be helped tremendously if people were still able to differentiate between the acts a person performs and who they are. Homosexuality is not a term that describes a sub-species of the human race; it is a term that clinically identifies a form of sexual dis-orientation. “

      • Mike Hind says:

As has been explained to you many, many times, procreation is absolutely NOT a stipulation for marriage. This entire post is false.

        • We the People (1st!!) says:

I didn’t say it was. The above compares the two complete opposite relationships, the family, and even the lack of the RIGHTS of the child having their natural parents being denied in a same-sex relationship.

Let me break it down slowly for you.

Traditional marriage (male-female) by its nature, is life-giving and authentic in its relational potentials of husband and wife, mother and father and child – This is true. Same-sex marriage cannot replicate this, it is not authentic. Guess what, homosexuals also agreed with this statement. I believe it took a male and female for you to be born.

Same-Sex is sterile and abuses the nature of the relationship between maleness and femaleness as such, as well as the rights of children in relation to their natural parents – This is True.

Homosexuality is not a term that describes a sub-species of the human race; – This is true. That is why this cannot be compared to being black as some people say and cannot be compared to Civil Rights.

Homosexuality is a term that clinically identifies a form of sexual dis-orientation. – True.

I guess you can’t handle the truth.

Please do not comment on my posts. You offer no information whatsoever supporting your position. You just attack everyone else who is opposite to same-sex. Do you not have any reasons why same-sex is right besides “love”?

          • Zevon says:

You think black people are a “sub-species”. I wonder what would happen if anyone else said that.
What about disabled people, and their right to equality? Do they only qualify if we think of them as a “sub-species” in your mind?

Homosexuality is sexual orientation. Not disorientation.

And as for this “life-giving” nonsense, if a 60 year old man and woman marry, how is that marriage expected to be life-giving? The issuance of children is not a prerequisite for marriage.

I hope that broke it down slowly enough for you.

          • Onion juice says:

Well at least the animal kingdom don’t have it twisted.

            • Mike Hind says:

Come on. This has been shown to be wrong many, many times.

Also, the animal kingdom doesn’t get married.

            • Anbu says:

Prove it then. How many times have u seen male animals tryin to mess eith other male animals? Christ u r stupid. Cant wait for gov to pass this bill just to piss all u bigots off! Lmao

          • Mike Hind says:

None of this is even remotely true.

            None of it.

Let me break it down for you.

You say you don’t say that procreation is a stipulation for marriage and then go on to say exactly that, claiming authenticity and saying that same sex marriage is sterile. This is a dishonest argument and it’s unfair.

This bit: “…well as the rights of children in relation to their natural parents” is just simply nonsense. You complain that gay couples can’t have kids, and then say that it abuses the right of those children… that don’t, by your definition, exist.
            This is crazy talk.

The reason people compare this to civil rights is because it is about privilege. Christian Privilege is just as big a problem as White Privilege.
And no one described homosexuality as a sub-species. You brought that up. It’s unfair and dishonest to argue against something no one else said.
Oh, and referring to black folks as a sub-species of the human race is disgusting.

AND homosexuality describes an orientation. Not a dis-orientation. What you said is NOT true.

And I ALWAYS back up my position. Always. YOU, however, never do. Ever.
The only one attacking is you.

As for a reason that this is right, besides “love”?
What more reason do you need? Straight people get married for love all the time.
That IS one of the big parts of the institution.
What’s crazy is that you offer NO reason for it to be wrong (all of the “reasons” you’ve ever given have been easily debunked!), yet, when you ask for reasons for it to be right, you give – and dismiss – the most important one.

That says a LOT about you.

So… do you have any reasons to oppose this that are honest, factual and true?

      • Zevon says:

There are plenty of traditional marriages where one or both cannot have children. So your argument is nonsense.

        • We the People (1st!!) says:

It is unfortunate that people cannot have children because of a medical/health condition and your use of this is not a fair and legitimate defence. Most of the people that cannot have children because of whatever condition or health reason, want and actually try to have children.

Also, as long as they are in a male-female marriage/relationship there is ALWAYS a chance to have children through treatment or a ‘miracle’ that shocks the doctors. There have been many cases also where a person or couple have been told they cannot have children, then suddenly, and to the shock of doctors the could is having a child.

In a same-sex relationship, you KILL any chances of having a kid. If you get a donor and then adopt, you are also being very selfish, denying that child their RIGHTS in relation to their natural parents/relationship of male-female.

The very same male-female relationship that have given you life.

          • We the People (1st!!) says:

correction above: “then suddenly, and to the shock of doctors the could is having a child.” it should be couple and not could

          • Mike Hind says:

This is irrelevant nonsense, desperately trying to rationalize discrimination.

All of it has been proven wrong.

      • Rhonnie aka Blue Familiar says:

It really doesn’t matter what a ‘traditional marriage’ is. That’s like saying if it’s always been a particular way it should stay that way and we all know that’s daft.

Dare I suggest his is little different than the bigotry that was faced by black people as they fought for their rights, from the point of slavery on up to today.

I know there will be those who will say that there is no comparison and to them I suggest that they look back at records on the harshest of the descriptions used against blacks. You will find them to be no different than those used against the LBGTQ community today.

At any rate, the ability to have a child is not a prerequisite for marriage. If it was a whole bunch of people who have gotten marriage should have been denied. Seniors. The infertile.

      • navin johnson says:

yes and how many children are born in Bermuda outside of marriage and abandoned?

      • Jen says:

So those heterosexual couples who cannot have children should not be allowed to marry either. There authentic relationship is not “life-giving” and is “sterile”.

    • Rhonnie aka Blue Familiar says:

      Just a question.

You say it’s not about religion, that it’s far more than religion can ever produce.

Okay. So what do you see it as being about?

I ask because everything else you say is related to religious beliefs.

    • 32n64w says:

“Let the law pass and it still won’t change God’s law.”

      Apples and oranges.

Our society’s legislative framework is based on the rule of law crafted, promulgated and regulated by a democratic society NOT a religious one. Please stop conflating unenforceable and irrelevant religious doctrine with legal realities. No one is forced to attend church and no church is forced to accept members.

    • Realist says:

The gay community at one point in time never!!! wanted anything to do with marriage so the change now is all about the legal gains of marriage not the joining in holy matrimony that God designed it to be. Marriage was created by God and not the courts its his design to build families…but SIN!!…..The gay community now is using a Holy thing to justify a unholy thing. Say I’m self righteous that’s ok I know who I am and my first allegiance is to God not man. I love each person regardless of choices and sin (which there is no degree to) because we are all sinners needing God’s grace daily. My prayers are with you all and please don’t say I Hate because I disagree with you. We all disagree on many things in this world
      One Love

      • jt says:

Marriage was not created by God – yours or any other.

      • Mike Hind says:

        This is incorrect.

Marriage is a legal construct. No one is forcing you to…

Gah. I can’t even. I’m getting sick of repeating myself.

You are wrong in this. Read all the other stories about this for evidence of this.

      • Rhonnie aka BlueFamiliar says:

“The gay community at one point in time never wanted anyting to do with marriage”.

Uhm…one, where would you get this belief from?

Two, please show me where God created marriage?

Three, yep, they want all the legal gains of marriage, because marriage is a legal construct, not a religious one.

No one is asking you to change your beliefs. No one is asking you to approve of their lives. All that is being asked if that you allow everyone the same legal benefits as everyone else.

        • W. Correia says:

“Two, please show me where God created marriage?”

That’s a good question. Here’s the answer: Genesis 2:22-25; this was the verse Jesus used to confirm how marriage was created as mentioned in Matthew 19:5; and the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 5:31.

“No one is asking you to change your beliefs. No one is asking you to approve of their lives. All that is being asked if that you allow everyone the same legal benefits as everyone else.”

That may be true for now; however, when we look at other nations where gay marriage has been instituted for some time, it has now been used to force people of faith not to voice their disagreement or their beliefs (Canada and Sweden are just two examples). In Sweden in particular, some years ago a pastor was arrested and jailed for preaching in his church what the word of God says about sexual sin, including homosexuality. He was later released but the homosexual community still demand his imprisonment.

          • Very good points as gay marriage will inevitably lead to what has been described as “gay totalitarianism.” This is part of the gay agenda which has as its ultimate goal the silencing of all voices that dare to disagree with their lifestyle. So much for freedom of speech, freedom of expression or freedom of religion. They all go out the window.

The irony is that the same people who criticize others for being intolerant are the most intolerant people you will ever come across. I am not suggesting this is true of all gays just the radical faction who unfortunately seem to have the most influence. Consider how some of them acted regarding the petition of Cornerstone Church and you begin to understand this illness.Read the many nasty comments directed toward not just Christians but God and Jesus as well. Yet if someone insults them all of a sudden it’s a violation of their human rights. Hypocrisy indeed!

            • Rhonnie aka Blue Familiar says:

There is a radical faction to every group and sadly those are the ones who get heard the most and cause the most damage to the actual cause of any sort of equality. They are also consistently the minority.

One should never hold that group against the rest.

            • Mike Hind says:

              More nonsense and fearmongering.

If your position is so strong, why do you have to resort to such dishonest means to make it?
Why not just use the truth and facts? Why resort to lies and rumours?

            • Zevon says:

              Gibberish.

            • Nightlilly says:

              *Freedom FROM religion

          • Rhonnie aka Blue Familiar says:

            Thank you for the response.

I went back and read the passages you’ve listed and I wasn’t surprised to find the wording that I have.

I understand that you believe those passages refer to marriage but my understanding of the scriptures in connection with understanding the practices of the time suggests something else entirely. It would be a long debate.

I did a brief search on the efforts to silence the faithful in relation to gay marriage and the best I could find on the short time available is in relation to publicly expressed hate speech. In that instance, yes it could well be used to silence the faithful, however there are ways to express one’s beliefs of sinners without it becoming hateful.

I’ll be looking into this further because I honestly do believe it to be wrong to punish people for their beliefs if they are not inciting hatred or violence to the broad masses.

          • Mike Hind says:

The bible is not proof that something in the bible is true.

And do you have links to the things you’re talking about?

      • Anbu says:

When will u thumpers finally realize that god has no place in this argument. Stop it. This ish is getting old now. Leave these people alone. They love just like tge rest of us and should be entitled to tge same benefits any of us have whilst being committed to someone else in a loving relationship. They put in just as much effort as us so why shouldnt they be allowed to have the same dignities as us? U wanna be opposed?, fine then do just that but u have ZERO right to tell these people how to live their lives. If there is in fact a heaven all u thumpers are going to hell simply because of how intolerant u are to others. They will not hurt u, or affect your life in any way. Leave them alone

    • SANDGROWNAN says:

“the next thing they want to cram down our throats,”

Really? Duanne, you sound curious to me.

    • frank says:

thank you for your thoughts finally some one to speak the trust on this matter
but were are the Bermuda church’s all silent
instead of church tomorrow and sunday unite togather and let the government know that gay marridge is wrong and unnatural and Bermuda stands up for the word of god

      • Mike Hind says:

Nothing in here is even a little bit right.
        Not even a little

    • Sickofantz says:

Hey Duane. Why are you so full of hate for your family of human beings?

If a guy called Jesus did exist and said all those wonderful things I am pretty sure he would be supporting gay marriage NOW.

    • Onion says:

He says that his opposition is not about religion, but the first sentence is about God’s Law. Actually God has several laws, and one is encapsulated in the golden rule given by Jesus and reiterated by several other religions – “You shall love God with all your heart and soul, and your neighbour as yourself.” I also want to remind folks that Jesus said nothing about homosexuality.

    • Person who knows a little says:

How about you make a deal with the gay community. They will stop cramming their beliefs down the religious peoples throats as soon as religious people stop ramming their beliefs down non religious peoples throats.

  2. Coffee says:

All love maybe equal but , this love seems to be getting the cold shoulder in Bermuda . Don’t you think ?

  3. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

Its gonna happen…move on…don’t need to be discussed here any longer…not interested…see you on the next topic.

  4. Tom Cooke says:

At some point this will pass… it’s inevitable. .. when a married couple come here and… are discrimated aganst for what ever reason. .. and take it to court… done deal.. and the church be dammed…

    • Not true from a legal perspective at all!The European Court of Human Rights, of which Bermuda, through Britain, is a consignatory, has ruled gay marriage is not a human right.https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/european-court-gay-marriage-is-not-a-human-right

      • Mike Hind says:

        Another false argument.

Mr. Cooke never said that it was a human right. People aren’t saying that.

When they refer to rights, it’s to equal rights… there’s a difference.

AND, if you want to follow Britain, let’s do so. Let’s have Marriage Equality!

        • Please Mike try reading what was written before commenting. What I stated was not a false argument but a fact. The ECHR made the ruling which now serves as a precedent for all lower courts including our local courts. That’s how the legal system works.

That said any argument made at the Supreme Court level by a gay couple pertaining to equal rights would need to be framed within the overall context of human rights which are one and the same.

Seeing the highest court that we, that is Bermudians, have the right of appeal to which is the ECHR has already ruled in favor of the state on this issue they would almost assuredly lose.

That is primarily because the most powerful weapon a lawyer can have in a case like this, legally speaking, is to be able to quote a recent precedent setting case at the highest level which supports their argument. This is not the United States!

As far as following Britain that has no relevance as I only mentioned Britain in regards to being a consignatory to the ECHR.

          • glitter says:

The UN Declaration of Human Rights clearly says that we have “the right to marry and to found a family” and that “we are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.”

So how does this fit into the above?

            • It does not as my opinion was based on the comment made concerning the legal aspect. Also consider that the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights was in place in 2012 when the ECHR made the ruling and evidently had no bearing on the case. And please keep in mind that the U.N. contains many declarations which are not adhered to in many countries.

            • clearasmud says:

You can read the ECHR ruling for your self in the 2011 handbook case -law update.Under section 4.3 Sexual Orientation page 15 in the case of Schalk and Kopf versus Austria you will find the courts ruling!

          • Mike Hind says:

            This is desperate, desperate rationalization.

It makes not a lick of sense. Sorry.

Wow there sure are some nasty, homophobic and twisted people here. Shame on you all.

  10. Proud to be Bermudian says:

The recurring topic here seems to be religion. Religion doesn’t play a part in this! If thats the case, I look forward to laws being passed banning wearing mixed linen cloths. I look forward to the law being passed banning those lobsters you love to eat. Until those laws are passed, do not speak to me about religion!

My gay marriage shouldn’t effect the way you live your life. Just like your heterosexual marriage doesn’t effect me. The only thing we are asking for is the same rights that you have. I don’t want to come to your church and get married. I don’t want you to come to my wedding. I quite frankly don’t want anything to do with you. I don’t understand why you are so against my human rights.

Blacks didn’t have the same rights as whites. Women didn’t have the same rights as men… This wasn’t okay. Now gay’s don’t have the same rights as straight individuals that’s okay?

Come on Bermuda. Wake up! Times are changing. Love is Love… and despite what your opinion is. your religious beliefs… Gay’s are here to stay. We’re not going anywhere.

I say all that to say,
    God Bless…
    *pun intended*

  11. Common Sense Talking says:

Religion aside – Homosexuality is abnormal, unnatural, and does not exist in nature. This evolution is being labeled as “right” and those who are for it say they are seeking “equality” and those who are against it are labeled as “wrong” or “religious”. Where will it end? Shall we next grant “equality” to those who want to practice beastiality and marry their animals that includes having sex and adopting children as well. Or will some of those very same ones who wanted “equality” for themselves then stand in a town hall meeting and speak of how absurd it is that people want to marry their dog or goat? While we are at it we should give equality to pedifiles as well.

    • Mike Hind says:

      Here we go again.

Every point in this post is false and is easily debunked.

Homosexuality DOES exist in nature. Marriage is what’s unnatural.
What’s being labeled as rights are rights. The rights that are being denied to a group of people based on someone else’s religion.
Those who are against it ARE wrong, because they’re denying rights to other people, and they are labelled religious because they are religious and are using that religion to deny the rights.
Bestiality is not any part of this conversation, as there is a thing called consent… That animals can’t give.
Oh, and animals also can’t sign legal papers.

And, just to complete the anti-gay bingo, your bring up, and misspell, paedophilia… Which, again, is not part of this, as children can’t give consent.

Don’t you guys read these threads before you post?

      • Nightlilly says:

Don’t forget about the polygamy argument.

Also, this isn’t a religious but a moral thing…and here’s a bible quote to support that!

  12. May the road rise to meet you.May the sun shine warm apon your face ,the rain fall soft apon your fields, and until we meet again ,may God hold you in the palm of His hand…

  13. By abomination do you mean abominable?….Or Obama nation?…or something more peculiar ?

  14. Hardtalk says:

    Duane,
Thank you for that quick insight into ‘Duane’s World’ what am amazingly ‘self righteous’ little empire you live in. It makes me laugh that the one thing that you think is for sure ‘we will all stand in the seat of judgement at the end of this life, to be judge(d) sic by the one who created us all’ is nothing more than an absurd concept devised by a mediaeval cult that you and others delight in subscribing to.
You don’t, by your own admission, want someone else’s lifestyle ‘crammed down you throat’ well guess what, I don’t what your bizarre guilt and punishment based beliefs in eternal divine slavery crammed down my throat. So, let’s get all of that nonsense out of the education system as well.
Basing your choice of lifestyle on a 2000 year old set of manuscripts of highly dubious provenance is entirely your right and I support that right. However, what is not your right, or anyone else’s, is to try and inflict your set of beliefs on others who have made their own decisions about their lifestyle. The only ‘abomination’ that I can see is the intolerance of religious cults and their members and their never ending desire to dictate to others how they should live their lives.

  15. Gom-bi says:

Sodom: here’s the real outrage. “Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him (7) and said, ‘No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. (8) Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men [i.e. angels], for they have come under the protection of my roof.’”

Nice dad. He offers his virgin daughters for rape by an angry mob in order to protect the two strangers. And those two ‘men’ will, in God’s name, go on to slaughter the entire population of the city. Still, Mrs Lot must have been a comfort to her mentally scarred daughters. Oh, wait a minute….

Yes, I guess in this morality tale it’s OK to mistreat women so horrendously and to kill entire populations. It still is, in some quarters; still justified on religious and/or cultural grounds: see the recent rapes of young women in India; the actions of ISIS; the way of everyday life in Saudi Arabia; the abduction of women in Nigeria; the shocking statistics of gay-bashing in America.

But the rational person has moved on, recognizing that what was acceptable more than 2000 years ago has changed. Rational people don’t, now, think it is OK to let women be raped, to stone adulterers, or to throw gay men of roofs. And we don’t take slavery to be an everyday, acceptable part of life. And we don’t sacrifice animals to appease the gods. No, that’s now the realm of zealots, bigots and misogynists. If you think you are that far removed from them, think again. That’s not what some of the comments here suggest.

But there is hope. Rational people see that love is love is love. No qualification. No right-love/wrong-love scale. No sanctimonious, often hypocritical judgements need be imposed. No sanctioning. No hate crimes called for. No belittling and jeering and physical assaults. No bigoted comments on news sites, penned in God’s name.

Today, Mrs Lot would be recommended a low sodium diet and her daughters would be offered protective custody. Mr Lot? He’d be splashed across the tabloids: “Father Offers Daughters as Sex Slaves.” You’ll find the full story on page 5, right next to, “Bermuda Delivers Equal Rights for All Citizens.”

    • Realist says:

God was actually giving them a chance to turn from there wicked ways but there heart was not for God but to do the wicked so he had to take action, and will do the same for this dark and dieing world we live in.

      • Cow Polly says:

And you’ll be saved and go on to heaven to sit with the rest of your sanctimonious friends – glad I won’t be there!

      • PAULm says:

‘Realist’, was there ever a more ironic pseudonym?

  17. Josh says:

For those that love to hang all their hopes on one bible line/passage I hope you or those around you are also strictly adhering to the following:

    1 Corinthians 14:34
34 The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says. 35 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church…

I sure hope that you don’t have on a polyester blend today, lest you find yourself judged:
    Leviticus 19:19 reads:
“You are to keep My statutes. You shall not breed together two kinds of your cattle; you shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor wear a garment upon you of two kinds of material mixed together.”

    • Nightlilly says:

Shhh Josh! They don’t like it when you point out all the quotes in which the bible supports slavery and misogyny let alone all the other “abominations” they’re committing.

  18. Think about it says:

I wonder if Mr. Brannon is being paid to promote the “Gay Agenda”? The last time I checked, websites cost money. Things that make you say hmmmm! I am going to suggest another viable reason that this agenda is being pushed on the masses and it has no religious POV. The number one reason imho is POPULATION CONTROL!! How else can the global elite achieve one of their goals of an eighty percent population reduction by 2050? The more people that are “gay” will result in fewer births naturally which will inevitably help lower the population over time. No responses necessary just do some research for yourself on the topic. Truth is stranger than fiction!!

    • Zevon says:

Who finances the People’s Campaign website?

    • Devonshire Devils Advocate says:

      Pure ignorance.

    • Ann says:

Give me a break, how many illigetimate children do you think we have in Bermuda, wouldn’t it be nice if Gay couples were allowed to adopt the children that don’t have parents, the church seems to have forgotten the sin of getting married before having children, women seem to just have them with multiple people who Aren’t taking care of them. Why do you think we have so much trouble with the youth today, NO FAMILY UNIT! I firmly believe gay marriage could offer so much to our small community and our children that have no one.

    • Mike Hind says:

      More hateful gibberish.

  19. Clueless says:

It’s not just that. If it gets legalized, the island would be filled with more gays than ever. Tourist would come from abroad since Bermuda is considered paradise. The only thing that is worrying me is that teens from 16-21 would be seeing this and thinking that it is ok to go and like the same sex

    • dream says:

that is just laughable! the countries from which these gay tourists will come from already have marriage equality you numbnut.

    • chris p bacon says:

Did you grow up as a kid being attracted to both boys and girls? If so, when did you decide you were straight? How did you make that decision?
ps. being a teenager ends at 19 (not 21)

    • Zevon says:

Why? They can already marry in most overseas territories, including the USA and UK.

    • Ann says:

You are clueless, there are many gay children out there right now, scared to death because we are so homophobic in Bermuda. Do you think they don’t read all this hate. I choose to raise my children to become decent people, whom they marry male or female shouldn’t be an issue.

    • Devonshire Devils Advocate says:

It’s not a choice… And if they like then same sex then so what?!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Clueless you need to be complimented on having a very appropriate screen name. You do it justice with every post.

    • Dee says:

Yes, you really are Clueless! I would rather this Island be filled with gays than bigoted, small minded people.

    • Mike Hind says:

      Wait… what?

So… if someone is gay (you know… interested in sex with people of the same gender as them), you don’t want them exposed to this because it would make them feel more comfortable actually being gay?

Seriously? You are against someone finding happiness and comfort in their own skin, in their own lives?

‘Cuz straight kids seeing more gay folks in Bermuda won’t make them gay.

      It’s not contagious.

    • Rhonnie aka BlueFamiliar says:

“The only thing that is worrying me is that teens from 16-21 would be seeing this and thinking that it is ok to go and like the same sex”

Allow me to introduce you to the internet, it allows freer access to anything and everything you can imagine, whether you want to imagine it or not, than any gay tourists who might want to come to Bermuda.

  20. N says:

It really disgusts me that issues like this take presidency when we have Edu & Youth concerns & Murders to assist/fix.
Or have we really just given up and accepted that our bad is and more valueLESS topics are more appealing?!

FIX!! This topic IS so PETTY :/ EGH!

    • Mike Hind says:

Petty to you, maybe. But to a couple who aren’t allowed to enjoy the same rights and privileges as the rest of us, simply because some people think that their personal religious beliefs should affect everyone else, it’s pretty important.

Other topics and issues being more pressing has nothing to do with whether this should be discussed and fixed.

    • Varied says:

Tell the organisations that are spending money on TV spots and websites where they should be focusing their considerable energy towards.

  21. BOBSURUNCLE says:

For those who study the bible, We should not be surprised about things like this,we should actually expect these things to take place in the times we live in. Each individual has to account for there own actions. We do not have the right to judge others. Only God can! The Bible says we should be keeping on the watch and preparing ourselves for Gods great day. However everyone has a right to religious freedom. We cant expect those who don’t feel the same way to live by those standards, and or Judge them for not doing so.Jesus showed love and so should we.

    • Nightlilly says:

Everyone has the right to religious freedom and freedom from religion

  22. Coffee says:

Perhaps marraige between a man and a woman was created solely to prevent the unsociable creation of bastard children . Through the sanctity of marraige , and based on the western original intent , gave the wonderful child a legal right to the fathers last name . Nowadays society doesn’t insist of the purity of the betrothed , however we should maintain strict boundaries on the principle , original intent of marraige .

How can gay marraige improve on that Philosophy …. .? I don’t know .

    • Mike Hind says:

Again, procreation isn’t a stipulation for marriage. Your point is invalid.

      • Coffee says:

Wow , how did you interpret that ? Oh I know , it didn’t agree with … Anyhow to eliminate the stigma of b@st@rd children running around …. Oh never mind . It’s just that , maybe …. You’ll never get it ! Nothing to do with procreation at all , but IF perhaps to legitimate then … The original intention ….

    • Tea Anyone? says:

  23. Don says:

Basically the argument boils down to the differences in cultures of the brain, amongst the races. Racism extends far beyond skin color; it also has a lot to do with the brain hemispheres – hence how we think. Its a non-disputed fact that white people, on a whole, think far differently from black people, on a whole, although you have a few from each race whose thinking tends to align more with the opposite race. If you’re not familiar with this, its called being Right Brain cultured, which deals more with unity, spirituality, creativity, etc vs being Left Brain cultured; analytical, divisive, logic. Black people are more inclined to be of Right Brain culture and whites of Left Brain culture. We see it all the time in movies where a white person would be in a state of danger but rather than stay in the face of that danger and escape, their curioysity keeps them fixated. Whereas black people usually have that sense that its best to leave as soon as possible. Lastly, did you happen to notice that the majority of the countries listed in the end of this article were primarily Caucasian/white nations. I rest my case.

  24. Yohanan says:

Tired of Christians shoving this s— down my throat and I’m tired of the governments shoving this gay s— down my throat. Give Christians marriage n gays something else to call their union n everybody is happy

    • Mike Hind says:

Why not just give them all marriage? Why create a separate but equal situation?

      • Nightlilly says:

Separate but equal has always worked so well in that past!
