Photos: Book Launch For “Bermuda Boater”

After 3 years out of print, the third edition Bermuda Boater will be available in bookstores and Marine supply shops effective today.

A private launch of the new edition was held at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club on Thursday, with Governor George Fergusson in attendance, and offering brief comments on contribution the Bermuda Boater has made towards safer waters in Bermuda.

One of the new features in the latest edition focuses on ‘Cruising in Bermuda’ which traces the path of a 2011, around the island cruise, hosted by the local branch of the Cruising Club of America [CCA] which saw approximately 30 US sailors sail to Bermuda for a 5 day cruise around the island, with dinner each night at local restaurants with water access.

It is hoped that the new edition will soon be available to overseas yachtsmen in an effort to encourage them to lengthen their stay cruising around Bermuda, especially after ocean races to the island.

This year, some 70 sailors on nearly 20 yachts will remain an extra week in Bermuda, after the Newport to Bermuda Prize Giving. They will be participating in a second CCA Bermuda Cruise. This is a direct result of the success of the 2011 event.

Many visiting sailors have never experienced the many bays and coves around the island and this will offer their first experience in places like Mangrove Bay, Ely’s Harbour, Dolley’s Bay. Castle Harbour and other secluded anchorages.

However the Bermuda Boater was designed to be, and still remains, a piloting and safety resource for local boaters. Some have passed the local marine pilot exams by using the book, and others have learned the basics of boat handling, mooring and piloting their new vessels without a formal course by relying on the book as their key resource.

The books have already been delivered to most local marine and books stores and will be available to the public on Monday, March 28th.
