BTA: Trends We See In Golf Tourism Are Positive

April 2, 2016

It’s understandable the news of Riddell’s Bay’s closure would be a blow to confidence, but the “trends we see in golf tourism are positive,” the BTA’s Director of Public & Stakeholder Relations Glenn Jones said.

This follows after the announcement that Riddell’s Bay Golf and Country Club will “immediately cease operations” as they have “insufficient cash to meet its operational costs.”

Mr Jones said, “I will miss playing golf at Riddell’s Bay and entertaining visitors there as I have done many times in the past. My thoughts are with the fine people who worked at the course as they deal with this sudden closure.

“Even with this unfortunate development, Bermuda has plenty of high quality golf product and can compete with any destination in the region for golf visitors.

“In fact, we see growth for golf tourism in Bermuda as a result of our sales and marketing efforts for the Grey Goose World Par 3, Gosling’s Invitational and Goodwill tournaments.

“Our annual Women & Golf event is growing and we’re excited to see the return of the Bermuda Golf Classic this month featuring NFL greats like Jerry Rice and Chris Doleman. College golfers are increasingly coming to Bermuda during spring break to tune up for their golf seasons.

“Also we’re excited to have the international expertise of Troon Golf working with Port Royal and Ocean View. Even professional tournaments like the Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada has moved to Bermuda in the past year and we have high confidence it will return in 2016.

“It’s understandable the news of Riddell’s Bay would be a blow to confidence, but, as just mentioned, the trends we see in golf tourism are positive.”

I wonder if these unfortunate workers will benefit from the 2000 Phantom jobs that were promised or get a trickle down from the America’s Cup.
But on the upside, Hanbury is STILL making $1000,00 a day and $80,0000 bonus for a failing industry.
        F!@#ing PATHETIC

        • Juiced says:

Thanks OnionJuice, we can always count on you for a positive daily thought.

Funny thing is when I look at your negative golf and tourism related posts I see no history of you complaining and voicing your displeasure over any of the following.

a)The amount of money spent (and overspending) at Port Royal.
          b)Faith Based Tourism
c)GlobalHue Tourism Contract (and reawarding it without an RFP even offered.
          d)TuckersPoint SDO
e)Closing of St Georges Golf Course
          f)Beyonce 4M$ Concert

Share your negative thoughts on the above please. Or will your friends and family frown upon that.

There is no rationalizing with onion juice. He does not understand the investment that the America’s Cup represents. He once stated that he wanted a hand up not a hand out, now that there is an opportunity (hand up) he is moaning every chance he gets. He has not travelled in twenty years and in fact has not left Alaska hole for a few years so his mindset is narrow by any standard.

            BTW Beyoncé was $5M

            • Onion Juice says:

You just don’t understand, you don’t know about investment, money don’t grow on trees.
And then SpongeBob makes a blunder on Land Tax.
              LMFAO

Don’t understand about Finances? Really? That is your comeback!
$800 million dollars are unaccounted for under the PLP watch. Almost every major project they dealt with starting from he Berekely Proactive deal that was $40 or was it $60 million over budget right through to Port Royal or Cruise Ship Pier moth of which went to friends and were tens of millions over budget. Wow, boy do you have selective memory.

            • Johnny says:

Wahoo – The America’s cup couldn’t help one of the most expensive golf clubs in Bermuda. I guess them sailors and their friends don’t play golf.

              • Pot Tee Mouth says:

                Once again for the ignorant.

                1) Americas Cup takes place in 2017!
                2) Americas Cups is a sailing event!
                3) Americas Cup should attract sailors.
                4) Riddels Bay is a Members Club that relies primarily on members dues, just like the Union and even the PLp.

                Get it now!?

          • frank says:

On. The real side of things. The. CEO and his staff at. The. Bta. Are getting paid. Big money and they. Have not delivered.
The ubp said that they wanted to!have tourism out of government hands but it is not.
So if the premier is on his. Game he would sort this. Out

        • Pot Tee Mouth says:

I guess they were just grateful that they had a job this long and weren’t parts of the almost 5000 people that lost their jobs during the PLP years. You know like those at St. Georges Club.

        • JUNK YARD DOG says:

The Bermuda government gave you free education as a pathway to success, till school leaving age, what more do you want ?

  2. moonbeam says:

It’s so nice to hear positive news. Too often, we dwell only on the negative. Thank you Glen Jones.

  3. Coffee says:

    Glen Jones is lying .

  4. HISTORY says:

    Those guys need to resign.

Forget about coming to cup match

    • Albie says:

  5. JUNK YARD DOG says:

If you own a small boat your are paying for their fun and get nothing in return.

    EG:::

Ely’s Harbor dock was bought and paid for by the US NAVY to service the “Arlene” during WW11.

    • Pot Tee Mouth says:

The US Navy paid for and maintained some of our bridges. You know like the ones that have been closed since Emily.

  6. Acegurl says:

Glen Jones you insult everyone’s intelligence.. A golf club closes down and you state that the state of golf is healthy in Bermuda. Utter nonsense. For what it’s worth the PLP and OBA had nothing to do with the mismanagement of this club. It was allowed to run itself into the ground. But please BTA do not underestimate the populace ability to come to decisions based on fact. You are the only government funded group that is sitting comfortably on your inflated budget. No results and increased funding.

    • JR says:

If you read the part where Glenn states the events that the BTA hosts that are attracting visitors to Bermuda he’s absolutely right. This year the Grey Goose had over 100 people come from overseas to play in the event. Last year the Nike Canadian event attracted a lot of people from Canada for the event as well.

The fact that Riddles has closed its doors is a sad state of affairs. As a private club its their job to attract new members. I dont think they did enough to get new membership in there. I offered to bring 10 people for a reduced rate and they said they couldnt give me anything less than what was offered. I wasnt asking for much but that was over $30,000 that they lost out on. Just saying.

  7. hotcrossbuns says:

Look at BTA’s website, visitor numbers are up this year. I’m sure OJ, PLP and unions will all be thanking the BTA as the tourism economy improves this year. Ya right.

    • Eve says:

BTA website shows Jan. & Feb. air arrivals are still declining. USA has to many golf destinations that offer more than Bermuda and at far better value. BTA has spent far to much time with Ameica’s Cup and ignored golf.

  8. Albie says:

    Opportunity for education? Yes.

Quality? Not bad in the 60′s and early 70′s. Not so good after that due to Bermudianization.

Best pathway to young non academics are the manual trades thru some sort of apprenticeship like many of our forefathers. Masons earn $50per hour with plumbers, electricians, boat mechanics commanding even more. That’s not too shabby anywhere in the world.
