Engine Issue, 6,000 Customers Lose Electricity

July 19, 2016

[Updated] Work is currently underway to restore power after BELCO experienced a load shed caused by the shutdown of one engine, resulting in approximately 6000 customers losing power in the Camp Hill, Fort Hamilton, Flatts, Fractious Street, Harrington Sound, Parson’s Lane, St. George’s and Tuckers Town areas.

A spokesperson said, “At 1:14pm BELCO experienced a load shed caused by the shutdown of 1 engine. As a result 14 circuits [approximately 6000 customers] are currently without power in the areas of Camp Hill, Fort Hamilton, Flatts, Fractious Street, Harrington Sound, Parson’s Lane, St. George’s and Tuckers Town.

“Work is currently underway to address the issue and restore power.

“Customers located in these areas are advised that they do not need to call into BELCO. It is anticipated that customers who choose to call may not be able to get through due to the high volume of calls that would be coming into the phone system at the same time.

“Updates will be provide as the situation is addressed through local media and via BELCO’s Facebook page and Twitter @BelcoBermuda.”

Update 2.54pm: BELCO said that power was restored to all customers at 2:37pm.

  1. Swing Voter says:

yeah, paid your shareholders big returns instead of upgrading the plant. Now you look 3rd world-ish….SMDH at BELCO!

    • sage says:

Come on now, be fair, Belcos’ entire crew was busy doing “essential” work, taking down the wires on Harbour Road for a high net worth individual, you can wait.

      • Res says:

Yeah why did Belco drop the high voltage lines and put them underground just for one house ?

        • Clear View says:

Because that one house can probably afford to do so.

        • swing voter says:

I will bet that job was paid for by the rich bie . umma call belco and ask them how much to trench and lay my HV in the ground ….. just for kicks

    • Onion Juice says:

Well, its a pleasure knowing that P.L.P. don’t take de blame no more.
      LMFAO

  2. Wow says:

This is really unacceptable. This happened yesterday as well and with a reported 5,000 less people in Bermuda there is no reason for this to be a daily occurrence and it always seems to happen to those who reside in the east. How is Belco going to handle this next year with the America’s Cup in full swing? Ridiculous!

To all the naysayers posting here. Get a life. Sh*t happens. So you lose your AC for a couple of hours, it’s a hot day and your beer is getting warm in the fridge. Everything mechanical breaks down every so often. It’s a fact of life. Look on the bright side. Apart from the gang related shootings that go on here, we are in a pretty safe environment. There have been to my knowledge no terrorist related incidents, ( since the late 60s early 70s ) that I can recall, and the local Police do not gun down people. Yes, we have a disfunctional political system and too much racially driven strife, but all in all we have a comfortable and safe environment. If you don’t like it, there are at least ten flights a day for you to solve your problem. Bon voyage.

      • Just saying says:

When you have a 90 yr old parent it is essential to have a fan running…last evening same thing happened…our bills are ridiculous but we get a very poor supply considering the cost. Always without power after a hurricane…longest period being 7 weeks.
It was impossible to get through to Belco as all numbers were not available

        • Zevon says:

You might want to look into getting a battery powered fan.
          Or maybe a generator.

      • Just saying says:

Not everyone can have the luxury of leaving the island …it can be life threatening to many

      • Wow says:

It’s 90 degrees outside, moron. There are elderly people and infants that rely on more than just A/C. How ignorant do you sound? I pay for a service and I better receive it. They don’t cut us any breaks on bills, why should we not speak up? Not to mention the damage it does to very expensive electronics. Get a life? What does that have to do with anything you buffoon? You’re clearly not all the way there mentally. Instead of suggesting people get a life you should seek help for your very clear mental illness.

      • What?? says:

Wow. Because we don’t have terrorist incidents everything’s hunky-dory and you should leave if you have any complaints.

The fact is that electricity isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity. There is a economic cost when the power is out. In fact, in this heat, there may be a health cost. We pay a fortune to Belco to provide us with power. We have every right to complain when they don’t and to demand answers concerning how these problems are going to be addressed. Particularly at a time when that company is paying out record dividends to their shareholders.

      • Juice says:

As you say, “Everything mechanical breaks down every so often.” but this is happening like once or twice a month, or even once or twice a week at times! I don’t blame the BELCO linesman who’s working in the hot sun to get my power on, or the mechanic who’s busting his knuckles in the dirt and grease to keep an engine maintained, or the operator who works long hours to keep the plant running. Its upper management who gets the blame for not providing the best tools and equipment for their workers. So yes, we have a nice safe home here in Bermuda, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t complain and lay blame when things go wrong. People have every reason to be upset. We pay a high price for the service so it bothers us that we don’t get high reliability out of it.

And thanks go out to the guys & gals who worked to get the power back on quickly.

  3. James Rego says:

    Same thing happened last evening.

  4. Family Man says:

Just Belco,s way of saying thank-you to all their customers for the recent fee increase.

  5. TJ says:

You can’t call BELCO anyway, 955 doesn’t work. You get a message that your call cannot be completed…..

  6. JohnBoy says:

Ay! Work it out BELCO. This is the 2nd time in two days nah!!

  7. Truth is killin' me... says:

“Life is like a box of chocolates…and then your Belco Bill comes!”

  8. John E. Thorne says:

Well done Belco for getting the power restored so quickly.
    We appreciate it.

    • Nanny Pat says:

Shouldn’t be happening in the first place. Get it together BELCO. If you expect me to pay my bill then I expect you to provide the service. This is unacceptable in today’s age.

    • What?? says:

That comment would be appropriate if the outage occured because of a problem outside of their control. That is not the case here.

  9. Peter says:

We are over a barrel on this one !

  10. Here we go again says:

Thus goes the summer run around, power out , then BELCO says see. That is why we need more money from higher bills to upgrade. Yet they can still pay shareholders.

  11. Yummy says:

For the second time in a week my power has gone off, WTH BELCO! get it together…

  12. Serious Though says:

no power in North Shore area !
