Bermuda Enjoy Convincing Win Over Panama
Bermuda have all but secured their place in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Sub-Regional Final with a commanding ten-wicket victory over Panama at the North Field, National Sports Centre, today [June 25].
Delray Rawlins smashed an unbeaten 52 as Bermuda chased down Panama’s total of 69 without losing a wicket. Rawlins’s fifty came off just 17 balls – the quickest T20 half-century by a Bermudian.
Spin pair Derrick Brangman [3-9] and Dominic Sabir [3-10] starred with the ball after Panama, who entered the match top of the qualifying group with two wins, elected to bat.
Panama were quickly put on the back foot by seam bowler Zeko Burgess, who struck twice in his opening spell, bowling Mohmad Sohel Patel for one before dismissing key batter Mahmed Bawa for two.
They slipped to 34 for three when Brangman removed opener Parth Patel for 22, with Isaiah O’Brien taking the catch in the deep.
Sabir then joined the wicket-taking, dismissing Irfan Hafejee, who was caught by Brangman at deep backward square leg, before having captain Anilkumar Natubhai Ahir stumped by Sinclair Smith for 12 after he missed a wide delivery.
Nathan Ingleston then swept to Jonté Smith in the deep off the bowling of Sabir, leaving Panama 56 for six.
Parth Ahir was trapped leg before by Brangman for two before left-arm spinner Rawlins removed Faizan Patel for 11 and Rizwan Mangera for a duck.
Brangman wrapped up the innings by dismissing Sagar Ahir for nought as Panama were bowled out for 69 in 18.5 overs.
Bermuda made a blistering start through openers Onias Bascome and Rawlins, who dominated the Panama attack from the outset.
Rawlins reached his half-century from just 17 balls, striking three fours and six sixes, while Bascome, who was dropped on seven, made 21 from ten balls, including three sixes.
The pair have now put on 121 runs in two matches without losing a wicket after sharing an opening stand of 48 in the victory over Belize on Monday.
Bermuda captain Terryn Fray praised his bowlers for laying the platform for victory.
“I thought the seamers bowled well, especially Charles Trott with some good variation,” Fray told Bernews.
“The spinners did really well — Dominic, Derrick and Delray. The wicket offered a bit of turn and it was just too much for Panama.
“Delray took the game away from them very quickly. To pass their total in under five overs was extraordinary. Our openers blitzed it.”
Coach Cal Waldron said Bermuda had executed their game plan perfectly.
“Delray and Onias batted really well,” he said. “It was a good performance and we’re staying on track with how we want to conduct ourselves as professionals.”
Bermuda can seal their place in the sub-regional final when they face Brazil on Saturday.
